The Trump Files: How Donald Made a Fortune by Dumping His Debt on Other People

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Until the election, we’re bringing you “The Trump Files,” a daily dose of telling episodes, strange but true stories, or curious scenes from the life of GOP nominee Donald Trump.

In 1995, five years after his business empire nearly collapsed under massive debt, Donald Trump was finally righting the ship. He’d sold off costly assets like his mega-yacht and money-losing airline, gone through two bankruptcies, and gotten debt relief by giving his creditors partial ownership of some of his properties. But the three casinos he still controlled—the Taj Mahal, the Trump Plaza, and the Trump Castle—were still deeply in debt.

So Trump figured out a way to erase that debt—at least for himself. He created Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, a publicly traded company that operated the Trump Plaza. For about six months, it was a success. The company’s stock shot up from $14 to $35 a share, putting Trump back on the Forbes list of America’s 400 wealthiest people and helping him pay down $88 million of his personal debt, according to the Washington Post’s Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher in their book, Trump Revealed. “The IPO of Trump Hotels was what finally fueled Trump’s comeback,” wrote Fortune this March.

Then Trump sprung the trap. He used the company to buy the Taj Mahal and the Trump Castle, effectively purchasing the casinos from himself at a price that he set. “The company bought his Castle for $100 million more than analysts said it was worth,” the Post reported in June. “Trump pocketed $880,000 in cash after arranging the deal.” The two properties were also $1.7 billion in debt, and that debt suddenly belonged to Trump Hotels instead of Trump himself.

By the end of 1996, Trump Hotels stock was worth just $12. It eventually crashed down to 17 cents a share. “A shareholder who bought $100 of DJT the company’s ticker symbol shares in 1995 could sell them for about $4 in 2005,” Kranish and Fisher wrote. The company lost more than a billion dollars and filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and 2009. But even as its value collapsed over the years, the company paid Trump a total of $82 million by Fortune‘s estimate, covered the cost of entertaining his VIP guests, signed contracts to buy other Trump products, and even employed then-26-year-old Ivanka Trump on its board.

Donald and Ivanka resigned from the company’s leadership in 2009 in protest of the bondholders’ demands to go into Chapter 11 bankruptcy again. But despite making a killing while leaving his shareholders in the lurch, he doesn’t have any regrets. “All I can say is I wasn’t representing the country,” he told the Post. “I wasn’t representing the banks. I wasn’t representing anybody but myself.”

This New York Daily News Bernie Sanders Interview Is So Amazing

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Good afternoon.

Bernie Sanders sat down with the New York Daily News for what the Washington Post called an “interview that was pretty close to a disaster.”

The funniest bit:

Daily News: I know you’ve got to go in a second. When was the last time you rode the subway? Are you gonna a campaign in the subway?
Sanders: Actually we rode the subway, Mike, when we were here? About a year ago? But I know how to ride the subways. I’ve been on them once or twice.
Daily News: Do you really? Do you really? How do you ride the subway today?
Sanders: What do you mean, “How do you ride the subway?”
Daily News: How do you get on the subway today?
Sanders: You get a token and you get in.
Daily News: Wrong.
Sanders: You jump over the turnstile.

Have a great day.

Ted Cruz Slams Idea of Women in Combat

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Ted Cruz told a crowd of supporters in Peterborough, New Hampshire, this afternoon that he was dumbstruck during last night’s debate that three of his Republican colleagues—Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Chris Christie—voiced their support for drafting women into the military.

“My reaction was, ‘Are you guys nuts?'” Cruz told the crowd, before launching a tirade against political correctness.

“We have had enough with political correctness especially in the military,” Cruz said. “Political correctness is dangerous and the idea that we would draft our daughters to forcibly bring them into the military and put them in close combat, I think is wrong. And if I am president, we ain’t doing it!”

Cruz then spoke about his own daughters and began to sound almost like draft protester from the Vietnam War era.

“I’m the father of two little girls, and I love those little girls with all my heart,” he said. “They are capable of doing anything in their heart’s desire. But the idea that their government would forcibly put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them doesn’t make any sense at all. It’s yet one more sign of this politically correct world where we forget common sense. We gotta get back to a president who just says, ‘No, that doesn’t make any sense.'”

Cruz’s opposition to the idea of women being drafted into combat roles did not appeal to the entire crowd of about 200 people who attended the rally. About half applauded loudly during those lines, while the others sat with their hands folded, suggesting support for women in combat is strong from certain parts of Cruz’s base, but not all.

Are We Still Yammering About Whether the Civil War Was About Slavery? Really?

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Are we still arguing about whether the Civil War was really fought over slavery? Seriously? What’s next? The Holocaust was really about Jews overstaying their tourist visas? The Inquisition was a scientific exploration of the limits of the human body? The Romans were genuinely curious about whether a man could kill a hungry lion? The Bataan death march was a controlled trial of different brands of army boots?

WTF?

Poll shows Americans are starting to worry about climate change again

Do Panic

Poll shows Americans are starting to worry about climate change again

By on 17 Jun 2015commentsShare

You know how this country has had something of an “it’s complicated” relationship to our feelings about the climate? Well, a new Pew poll out yesterday shows that more Americans are starting to worry about the climate again — after taking a break around 2008, presumably to fret over other things, like our country’s complete financial dysfunction. From the New York Times:

About 69 percent of adults say that global warming is either a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem, according to a new Pew Research Center poll, up from 63 percent in 2010. The level of concern has still not returned to that of a decade ago; in 2006, 79 percent of adults called global warming serious. …

The percentage of Americans who agree with the scientific consensus — that global warming is occurring and caused by human activity — has also bounced back in the last few years. Sixty-eight percent of Americans also say there is “solid evidence of warming,” up from 57 percent in 2009.

With an eye to the upcoming climate encyclical from the pope, the same survey looked specifically at attitudes about climate change among American Catholics. They pretty much matched the partisan divide in the rest of the country, says Pew:

Generally speaking, Catholics express higher levels of belief in global warming and concern about its effects than do Protestants, but lower levels than people who are religiously unaffiliated (atheists, agnostics and those whose religion is “nothing in particular”). However, analysis of the survey findings shows that political party identification and race/ethnicity are much better predictors of environmental attitudes than are religious identity or observance.

Good to know that climate change deniers don’t allow silly, ideological divisions like religion to get in the way of wrongheaded opinions!

Meanwhile, the rest of us who are slowly starting to realize that this climate thing is actually a big deal: Good job! Your panic is wise and well-informed.

A Wee Question About That Residual Force Everyone Keeps Blathering About

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Here’s something I don’t get. Republicans seem to universally hold the following two opinions about Iraq and ISIS:

  1. President Obama is to blame for the military success of ISIS because he declined to keep a residual force in Iraq after 2011.
  2. In the fight against ISIS, we certainly don’t want to send in combat troops. No no no.

“Residual force” has become something of a talisman for conservative critics of Obama’s Iraq policy. It’s sort of like “providing arms,” the all-purpose suggestion for every conflict from hawks who know the public won’t stand for sending in ground troops but who want to support something more muscular than sanctions. It’s a wonderful sound bite because it sounds sensible and informed as long as you don’t think too hard about it (what arms? for whom? is anyone trained to use them? etc.). Luckily, most people don’t think too hard about it.

“Residual force” sounds good too. But if we don’t want boots on the ground in the fight against ISIS, what exactly would it have done? Hang around Baghdad to buck up the morale of the Iraqi forces that came fleeing back after encountering ISIS forces? Conduct ever more “training”? Or what? Can someone tell me just what everyone thinks this magical residual force would have accomplished?
