What Fishes To Use In Aquaponics

The system of growing plants and fishes in an environment where both can benefit from each other in a symbiotic way is called Aquaponics. The plants makes use of the wastes from the fishes and this serves as their natural fertilizers while the fishes benefit from the plants because the plants are responsible in cleaning the water where the fishes grow.Fish tank, grow beds, your choice of fishes to grow, your choice of plants to grow, water, pipes, pumps and the area where to place your Aquaponics system are the things that one should decide and prepare before starting to set up their own Aquaponics.

Before beginning to set up the Aquaponics system, a lot of people are confused on what types of fish they should grow. There are factors that should be considered in choosing the type of fish to grow in this system.

-Water temperature and environment that the fish will live. Different types of fishes have differences in their ability to tolerate water temperature and environment. There are fishes that needs warm water to live in and there are those that need cooler water. Introducing a fish to a water temperature that they cannot tolerate may cause them to die.

-Another factor to consider is the speed of growth of the fish which is actually important especially if the reason why you are raising fishes is for food production. A type of fish that grows and multiplies fast is recommended to be raised if your main reason for raising them is for food production. Also be sure to raise fishes that are good-tasting for this purpose.

-Choose a type of fish that can live in a closed system. Since Aquaponics is a closed system, it is significant to choose which types of fish can live in that kind of system. You also have to make sure that you will choose a fish that will be able multiply and reproduce in this kind of system.

Since you are already aware of the different important factors to be considered in choosing what type of fish to be raised in Aquaponics, you have increased your chances of being able to decide on what type of fish you want to raise. Below is a list of commonly raised fishes in Aquaponics:

-The first type of fish is the goldfish. The goldfish is commonly selected to be raised in Aquaponics because it is inexpensive. This type of fish is tolerant to cold water temperature.

-BARRAMUNDI-is an edible kind of fish that can tolerate warmer temperature. This type of fish can provide sufficient harvest and offers a good-tasting and crispy meat.

-CHANNEL CATFISH-if provided with a well-balanced environment, this type of fish can grow rapidly. This is a unique type of fish species because instead of having scales, they have tough skin and whiskers. Also, it is important to know that these types of fish are bottom-dwellers.

-Next fish is one of the most appropriate type of fish to be grown in Aquaponics because of their higher productivity than any other types of fish. This fish is known as the Carp.

-TILAPIA- this type of fish cannot tolerate cold water temperature. However, because of its capability to grow fast, this type of fish is one of the most popular choices to be grown in an Aquaponics system. Despite the fact that this type of fish is an invasive specie, they are still a very good choice of fish to grow because of their delicious tasting meat which is also a good source of protein.

Aside from choosing the right kind of fish to grow in Aquaponics, it is also important to make sure that you know basic information regarding the type of fish that you have chosen to grow in order to provide them with an environment that is appropriate for them and will help them to grow healthy.

Climate Change Will Drive Up Manhattan’s Heat-Related Death Toll

Climate change-related deaths may be even worse than these researchers are projecting. Washington Square Park, by marccappelletti/Flickr Despite the modern advances of central air and cooling centers, record-hot weather still regularly kills people all over the world. A 2010 heat wave in Russia was blamed for killingabout 55,000 people. An earlier one, in 2003, claimed 70,000 across Europe. And an infamously scorching stretch of the summer of 1995 in Chicago killed about 750. Climate change brings with it the threat that such natural disasters could happen more often, with higher death tolls, as late spring and early fall start to feel more like summer, and as summer itself gets worse. Cities are particularly vulnerable, given the urban heat island effect (we also know that certain neighborhoods within most cities are at particularly grave risk). Temperatures around New York City, for example, increased by about 2 degrees Celsius between 1901 and 2000 – a rate that was higher than the national average. Exactly how bad the heat waves will get will depend on some uncertain factors, like how fast global populations rise and how successful we are at curbing greenhouse gasses. But researchers at Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the Mailman School of Public Health have at least attempted to come up with some estimates. In new research published in the journal Nature Climate Change, they downscale future temperature projections for the island of Manhattan using 16 climate models under two scenarios (one assumes rapid global population growth and scant attempts to limit emissions; the other assumes slower growth and technological advances that slow emissions by 2040). In all 32 scenarios, compared to a baseline set in the 1980s, heat-related deaths in Manhattan go up, in some cases by as much as 90 percent by the year 2080. And these projections take into account that there will be fewer cold-related deaths from climate change. The net effect, though, still looks gruesome. The biggest jump in deaths, these models suggest, will come from “the months surrounding summer,” those stretches of May and September that we seldom associate today with heat waves. The chart at left, from the paper, shows the percent change in heat-related deaths, averaged across 16 models, in the 2080s relative to the 1980s. All of those summertime deaths also clearly wipe out any any positive changes in the wintertime death toll. The reality in the future may be even worse than these researchers are projecting. This study doesn’t take into account changes in demographics, and New York City (along with the rest of the country) will age in the coming decades. The study also doesn’t consider how air quality may worsen with climate change. But then again, we never know what technology (and health care) may bring us in the next 70 years. These early projections, though, should be enough to get us thinking now about how to get ready. Guide To Get Started With Aquaponics

Aquaponics may be something that most people have not heard of yet. But once a person gets to know the meaning of Aquaponics, they will be able to know that Aquaponics is simply the process of cultivating plants and fishes and providing them with an environment wherein they will benefit from each other. Hydroponics and Aquaculture are concepts that Aquaponics has adapted. Aquaculture is the process of cultivating underwater plants and animals while Hydroponics is the process of growing plants using s different medium other than soil.

Aquaponics offers a lot of benefits and advantages to the people utilizing this method of cultivating plants and fishes. One of the benefit that one can enjoy in using the Aquaponics is the ability to conserve water in the process of growing fishes. This is because utilizing the Aquaponics system of growing up the fishes, unlike when growing up a fish in a normal fish tank, does not require you to change water frequently since water is cleaned and recycled by the plants and with the help of a water filtering system included in the Aquaponics system. Aside from that, it also provides and opportunity to make use of the fish wastes as natural fertilizers. This gives you the assurance that the plants that you are growing is free from harmful chemicals.

What are the things to prepare to start your own Aquaponics system at home?

Aquarium or fish tank with the size enough for your planned number of fishes

Waterproof container

grow beds-this is where you will grow your plants

water filter

pump

Procedure:

1. First is to prepare the things needed to setup your Aquaponics system.

2. Making sure that the fish tank or aquarium is clean and well-prepared, fill it with water. It is recommended to leave the water on the fish tank or aquarium for a couple of weeks to give it time to mature and ready for the occupancy of the fishes.

3. Prepare your grow beds to be placed near the fish tank. It can be placed above or at the side of the fish tank, whatever you prefer. Another good thing in making use of the Aquaponics system is that you can have as many grow beds as you like but you just need to make sure that the water on the fish tank as well as the fish wastes are enough to sustain and supply them with water and fertilizers.

4. Attach the pump and filter to the fish tank.

5. Placing the fishes on the aquarium or fish tank is the last step to do and your Aquaponics system is already set up.

Now after discussing the procedure, we also need to know the 3 significant factors that greatly affects the Aquaponics system. Here are those factors:

1. vegetation or plant is the first factor to consider in starting up an Aquaponics system since they are the ones responsible in providing oxygen to the water as well as cleaning the water from the fish wastes and other toxins that may be dangerous for the fishes. It is important to remember that plants and vegetation for he Aquaponics system should be balanced and proportional to the number of fishes that you are raising. Now to make sure that your plants and fishes is proportional and is properly-balanced, you should consider some factors including the amount of feeds you give to the fishes everyday, the amount of feeds not consumed by the fishes, weight, size and age of fishes, type of plant to be raised, and the number of fishes you are raising. Knowing this is essential to ensure that the plants will be able to get ample nutrients to grow healthy.

2. Fish-the fish produce the wastes that are utilized by the plants as fertilizer. It is vital to decide what species of fish you want to grow using the Aquaponics system, the number of fish you want to grow and the size of this fishes. You have to make sure that it is balanced with the plants that you are going to grow.

3. The third factor that affects the Aquaponics system is bacteria. Bacteria is responsible for breaking down ammonia into nitrates, which if not broken down will not be absorbed by the the plants and tendency is that it will just remain on the water. Ammonia, if not removed from the water, is a harmful substance that may hinder the growth of your fishes.

It is very clear that the most important thing to remember in starting your own Aquaponics system is the balance that it should have regarding its 3 major components. Making sure that there is balance will also give you assurance of the success of your Aquaponics system.

Learning What Aquaponics Is

Learning the meaning of Aquaponics entails having to understand two words that is basically makes up or is the important components onf Aquaponics. By understanding the meaning of the two words, Aquaculture and Hydroponics, it will be easier to explain and know what Aquaponics means. Aquaculture is basically the process of plant or animal cultivation or development under water. This means that Aquaculture is the process of taking care of underwater plants and animals, both salt and freshwater that is. On the other hand, Hydroponics is simply plant cultivation without the involvement of soil as a medium to grow the said plants. Now in order to understand Aquaponics, it is simply defined as a combination of both Hydroponics and Aquaculture. To explain further, Aquaponics is the process of raising fishes and growing plants in an environment wherein both can benefit from each other.

Most of you will ask on how does Aquaponics really work? The Aquaponics system simply works by having the fish and plants benefit from each other. The fishes are responsible to provide nutrients to the plants with the use of their wastes, at the same time, the plants are responsible in cleaning the water and providing it with oxygen supply before the water is being brought back to the fish tank. This way both the fish and plants will grow healthy because of the benefits that they get from each other. For better understanding, let me explain further on how the whole process works. Fishes are grown in a fish tank that is directly connected to grow beds which is the place or the area where the plants are planted and grown. Grow beds and the fish tank is connected by pipes that has different purposes. One or a set of pipes is used to pump water from the fish tank towards the grow beds. water from the fish tank carries fish wastes that will be utilized by the plants as their natural fertilizers and will make them grow healthy. On the other hand, another pipe is to pump back the water from the grow beds towards the fish tank. Water that comes from the grow beds is now free fro fish wastes and contains oxygen content needed by the fishes to grow. Also the water is cleaned using a filtering system made up usually of pebbles, sands and stones.

Here are some of the benefits of utilizing the Aquaponics method of growing plants and fishes:

– Provides natural fertilizer for the plants. As mentioned earlier, since the fertilizer utilized by the plants comes from the fishes directly, it does not contain harmful chemicals that may have damaging effects on the plants.

-Water conservation is another benefit that you can get in making use of the Aquaponics system of growing plants and fishes. you can conserve water because there is no need for you to change the water on the fish tank very often, instead you can just add little amounts of water which will just replace the water that is lost during evaporation. There is no need to change water on the fish tank often because water is cleaned and filtered by the plants and the water-filtering system. Aside from that, water is also supplied with ample amounts of oxygen needed by the fish.

– One may think that Aquaponics system can only grow limited kinds of fish and plants, but another good thing that Aquaponics offers is that you have a wide variety of choices of what kinds of fish or plants to grow.

Aquaponics is something that most people are not accustomed to do but it is good to know that this kind off system in growing plants and fishes is very helpful in order for us to provide environment for both the fishes and plants to mutually benefit from each other.

There Are Three Basic Types of Aquaponics Setups

There are three basic types of aquaponics systems.

They are media filled beds, nutrient film technique and the deep water culture system. Within each category there are endless variations in the design and construction of individual systems. The important thing is that the plants and fish co-exist in their separate environments.

The local high and low temperatures impact the site conditions which cause specific changes to individual setups. Systems need protection from local wind and weather conditions. It is essential to protect against contamination from chemicals and other poisons. Sunlight and orientation to the sun are also important factors in your setup.

Another major factor in the design of the system is the budget and space constraint. Systems can range in size from small systems using an indoor aquarium to large scale commercial operations. Depending on the site conditions one of the following options will likely be best suited for your needs.

1. Media Filled Beds: This type of system uses small grow media balls that are used to support the root system of the plants. The media is flooded with waste water and nourished with plant friendly water. The media should not be limestone as the pH will be affected and certain nutrient reactions will be inhibited. Low cost and ease of setup make this a great choice for a beginner. The simple ebb and flow system has been used for many years for backyard systems.

2. The NFT (nutrient film technique) is another common way to setup an aquaponics system. Water is pumped from the fish tank and then allowed to gravity flow in a thin film through an enclosed gutter where the plants are placed until they are harvested. this is a great way to grow leafy vegetables, but is not as optimal for taller plants due to the lack of support for the roots.

3. Deep Water Culture is exactly what the name implies. Deeper water is used and plants are floated on the surface so the roots can dangle into the water. The water is aerated for the fish and the plants float on the surface. This is ideal for larger scale operations.

Flood and drain media filled beds are simplest and most reliable systems for beginners. It can be done in a variety of different containers and you can use recycled materials. The flood and drain system also doesn’t require extensive maintenance.

For bigger systems, the deep water culture method is a great fit since the overall costs are reduced a t the larger scale of production. This method is also highly expandable.

Growing Your Own food at Home Using Aquaponics

Introduction

Food prices are rising because of inflation, drought, and high demand caused by an increasing population. These factors are making more and more people want to start growing their own food at home.

If you want to grow your own food you should look into A-P better known asaquaponics. This new gardening method will allow you to grow food at home and save energy at the same time. Keep reading to learn what aquaponics is, why it is better than regular gardening, and how you can cultivate your own food using this new cultivation method.

Aquaponics Defined

This great new farming method combines the best aspects of hydroponics with the best aspects of aquaculture. With hydroponics, plants are typically grown with their roots suspended in a solution of nutrients. This solution allows for faster absorption of vital nutrients by plants as compared to plants grown in soil.

In aquaculture, better known to some as fish farming, different species of fish are raised for food. These fish are mostly raised in large man made tanks. However sectioned off parts of coastal waters and rivers have also been used to farm fish.

Soil Based Gardening vs. Aquaponics

A regular garden requires a lot of manual labor. You have to till soil, shred compost, pull weeds and spread fertilizer. With A-P there is no soil, this means there is no soil tilling. The fish in your system produce the nutrients for your plants. This eliminates the need to shred and spread compost and to apply fertilizers.

You also need to constantly water a regular garden because of water loss caused by soil absorption. In an A-P system, the water is recirculated and reused. This greatly reduces the amount of water that you have to use to grow your own food.

Fruit Growing with Aquaponics

This is a gardening Method that lends itself quite well to growing fruits. Typical fruits grown in an aquaponics system include tomatoes, strawberries, and melons. You can also grow fruit trees with aquaponics if you set your system up to handle these kinds of plants. Fruit grown using A-P is often of better quality than store bought fruit.

Vegetable Growing with Aquaponics

Vegetable growing using A-P is easy and fun. Almost any kind of vegetable will grow really well. Root vegetables such as potatoes are the only types of vegetables that you may have difficulty growing. Root crops need to be grown in a media based system and/or wicking beds for best results.

Keeping Fish in an Aquaponics System

A-P allows you to grow fish in your backyard as easily as you grow plants. You can grow many types of fish. In fact you can raise any gill breathing aquatic animal. Commonly raised aquaponic fish include tilapia, jade perch, and small mouth bass.

Conclusion

Growing your own food at home using A-P is a great idea. With food prices increasing because of droughts, inflation, and increasing demand; it is becoming more and more important to begin growing your own food. Using an A-P system to grow your own food is a smart move. Aquaponics allows you to grow vegetables and meat at the same time. A-P also will save you money because there is no need to buy fertilizers.
