Obama Just Announced His Full Support to Preserve Net Neutrality

Mother Jones

In a move strongly backing net neutrality regulations, President Barack Obama announced his plan to reclassify the internet as a utility in order to preserve the web’s “basic principles of openness and fairness.”

Net neutrality has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation — but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted. We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas.

In the announcement, Obama urged the FCC to implement four “common-sense steps” to help protect net neutrality, including increased transparency and the prohibition of paid-priority gatekeeping by internet service providers.

The decision, however, remains up to the FCC, which has thus far proposed new changes to allow content providers to pay cable companies for so-called “fast lanes” of service. Net neutrality advocates say the proposed rules are a threat limiting access to the open internet.

“Simply put: No service should be stuck in a ‘slow lane’ because it does not pay a fee,” Obama said in the Monday morning statement. “That kind of gatekeeping would undermine the level playing field essential to the Internet’s growth.”

Unsurprisingly, the GOP is not happy with the president’s plan:

Support for Ground War Against ISIS Keeps Growing

Mother Jones

“So much for war weariness,” crows Ed Morrissey today, and unfortunately it’s hard to argue with him. Here’s the latest:

This is a Fox poll, so maybe we have to take it with a grain of salt. Question 22, after all, is about whether Barack Obama has been too tough or too soft on radical Muslim extremists, and that probably primes the ol’ military aggression pump a wee bit. Still, these are the highest favorability ratings I’ve seen yet for ground action against ISIS, and they seem to rise with every new poll.

So will these numbers just keep going up, until the whole country is good and lathered up for Iraq War 3.0? Or, after a few months, will Americans get tired of the whole thing and lose interest? The evidence of history can point either way. In the meantime, however, I reserve the right to remain very, very nervous about Obama’s ability to hold out against the tide of war.

Why American Politics Is Broken In One Sentence

Mother Jones

Dave Weigel explains modern politics in a single sentence:

Voters are aware of a border crisis, they are aware that Barack Obama is president—they blame him for nothing getting done.

Yep. Republicans can basically do anything they want and never get blamed for it. Most voters don’t even know who’s in control of Congress anyway. When something goes wrong, all they know is (a) something went wrong, and (b) Barack Obama is the president and he should have done something about it.

That being the case, what incentive do Republicans have for making things go right? Pretty much none. This is, roughly speaking, a fairly new insight, and it explains most of what you need to know about American politics in the Obama era.

Our statement on the release of President Barack Obama’s energy blueprint

Posted 15 March 2013 in

National

We commend President Obama’s commitment to move America toward oil alternatives – the best way to reduce pain at the pump and address climate change.

The Energy Security Trust Fund is a major step in this direction, and cost-effective, homegrown renewable fuel will play a central role. The initiative could not come at a better time, as gas prices and global temperatures are on the rise, and the oil industry is redoubling its efforts to block alternatives.

In 2012, 13 billion gallons of domestic, renewable fuel were blended into the American fuel supply, not only contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions by 13% nationally, but also employing over 380,000 Americans. Further innovation and growth of renewable fuel will continue to lower gas prices, reduce harmful emissions and protect us from volatile oil markets.

Renewable fuel is a key facet in President Obama’s energy strategy and the renewable fuel industry is united and ready to contribute to those aims.
