You know what really gets me? Even among the millionaires, repeal will only net them about $50,000. That’s like finding spare change in the sofa cushions for this crowd. Is clawing back a few nickels and dimes really worth immiserating 20 million people?

Just a quick note to repeat something I said a few days ago: don’t pay any more attention to President Trump’s budget than you do to his tweets. It’s not meant as a serious proposal. It’s just a way for him to send a message to his fans that he hates the EPA and the State Department and loves vets and the Pentagon.

The real action is in Congress. They won’t pay any attention to Trump’s budget, and he knows it.

A reader emails to tell me something about the new Republican health care bill. Out of its 66 pages, a full tenth of them are devoted to…

…a new rule allowing states to deny Medicaid coverage to lottery winners.

Seriously. That’s a tenth of the bill. This is part of the insane conservative preoccupation with making sure that no undeserving person ever gets away with anything. That’s why they’ll spend six solid pages on something that will probably affect about 0.01 percent of all Medicaid recipients. It’s too bad they don’t pay equal attention to all the deserving people their bill will hurt.

I’m playing around with GeoFRED again while we all wait for the next three or four shoes to drop on the Jeff Sessions show. Here’s an interesting map: the rate of preventable hospital admissions. This is based on the number of hospital admissions for “ambulatory care sensitive conditions,” such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension, which normally doesn’t require hospitalization if patients are being treated by good primary care doctors. Essentially, then, this map shows the places where good primary care isn’t widely available or isn’t doing its job.

What makes it interesting is that it doesn’t map all that closely to poverty. From Kentucky down to Louisiana, you have lots of counties with high poverty and a poor access to good primary care. But north of that you have the same thing even though poverty is relatively low. Out west, you have the opposite: a fair amount of poverty, but pretty good access to primary care. So what’s going on?

Arizona Suggests Forced Suicide For Death Row Inmates

It’s getting tougher and tougher to obtain the lethal cocktail used to execute prisoners convicted of capital crimes:

Now Arizona has responded with a new — and some say bizarre — solution to this quandary: Death row inmates can bring their own execution drugs. The state’s manual for execution procedures, which was revised last month, says attorneys of death row inmates, or others acting on their behalf, can obtain pentobarbital or sodium Pentothal and give them to the state to ensure a smooth execution.

Note to conservatives: sometimes you just have to give up. Do you really care that much about killing lots of bad guys as opposed to letting them rot in prison for the rest of their lives? It might be time to let go and save your energy for other battles. This one is getting absurd.

According to a new PPP poll released today, here are some of the views of people who voted for Donald Trump:

Now, before you all get too bent out of shape, I’d like to point out that there’s some good news here: only 14 percent of Trump’s supporters want to invade Mexico. Not so bad, eh?

I’d also like to point out that a week ago I predicted that lots of Trump supporters would hear about the Bowling Green massacre but only a few would hear that it didn’t actually happen. Well, I was right. Belief in the BGM outscored disbelief 51-23 percent. And isn’t that what’s really important? That I was right?

A couple of weeks ago I said we’d need to wait a couple of weeks to see how President Trump’s immigration order affected his favorability rating. Well, those couple of weeks are up. Here’s how he’s doing:

Trump was already on a post-inauguration upward swing, and his immigration order seems to have kept it going. He’s gained more than three points of favorability since he announced it—and that’s despite the chaos surrounding the rollout and the near-daily revelations of other incompetence on his part. Buckle up.

From Politico:

Hours after a federal judge ordered customs officers to provide lawyers to travelers detained at Dulles airport last Saturday, senior Trump administration officials instructed the guards to give the travelers phone numbers of legal services organizations, ignoring a mass of lawyers who had gathered at the airport.

Most of the legal services offices were closed for the weekend, effectively preventing travelers with green cards from obtaining legal advice.

….The CBP officers at airports were not rogue individual actors, according to the documents obtained and people interviewed by Politico. Rather, the agents on the ground were following orders from high in their chain of command.

It would be nice to think that a few people will be held in contempt over this. I’m not holding my breath, though.

Nine months ago President Obama signed an executive order that required retirement advisers to act in the best interest of their client. That seems like a good idea, doesn’t it? Maybe to you it does, but as it turns out, Republicans hate it. It’s just more nanny state-ism. They think everyone should have the freedom to pick financial advisors who get secret kickbacks for steering you into lousy investments.

Donald Trump doesn’t actually seem to care one way or another, but whatever. If Republicans want to repeal it, what the hell:

So that’s that. A few seconds after he signed the EO, a reporter tried to ask him a question about Iran. “They’re not behaving,” Trump said, and the pool was escorted out.

America First? How Do We Know If President Trump Fulfills His Promise?

Donald Trump wants American corporations to invest in America, and he’s promised to enact policies that will make America First. So how do we measure whether he’s successful? I don’t know, but I’ll toss out a possible metric:

During the past eight years, US corporations invested about $300 billion overseas each year. If Trump is successful, this number should go down.

Or, perhaps some ratio would be a better measure: foreign investment as a percent of total investment. Or maybe something entirely different. In fact, I’m mostly publishing this as a provocation: if this is the wrong measure, what’s the right one? What’s the best way of knowing if US corporations start to direct more of their investment dollars into domestic expansion instead of building or buying overseas? Any trade economists want to weigh in on this?
