For what it’s worth, here’s how Pollster’s head-to-head matchups between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have evolved since the beginning of the year. Hillary’s support has been pretty stable, while Trump’s has declined steadily. He doesn’t have much time left to turn that trend around.

John Cena does a lot of things. He delivers a mean body slam, raps, and now has some pretty awesome things to say about what patriotism should mean in America.

“Patriotism is love for a country—not just pride in it. But what really makes up this country of ours? What is it we love?” he asks. “It’s the people.” In this video, released on July 4 as part of an Ad Council campaign, Cena challenges our biases about who we think the average American is and reminds us that “almost half the country belongs to minority groups.”

The main message? Throw out the labels. Love everybody. And stop imagining that the average American is a white man. Watch below:

And if you’re looking for reasons to be proud of America today, here’s a quickie top ten list. Every country makes plenty of mistakes, and we’ve certainly made our share. But even taking our shortcomings into account, we’ve done an awful lot right:

  1. We have the most dynamic culture of entrepreneurship in the world.
  2. In the postwar era we have consistently supported free trade, often at our own expense.
  3. We were on the right side of history in the fight against fascism.
  4. We were on the right side of history in the fight against communism.
  5. We are on the right side of history in the fight against terrorism.
  6. We have the strongest protections of speech and religious freedoms in the world.
  7. We protect the world’s sea lanes all but single-handedly.
  8. We are the most benign hegemon in world history.
  9. Even today, we accept and incorporate immigrants better than nearly any country in history.
  10. American science is the most vigorous in the world, to the benefit of nearly every person on the globe.

John Oliver Gave Away $15 Million to Show Just How Shady the Debt-Buying Industry Is

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

According to the latest Last Week Tonight, Americans collectively owe more than $12 trillion in debt—a serious problem that has given way to a questionable industry of debt buyers that prey on vulnerable people hoping to relieve their crushing financial situations. Oftentimes, these debt collectors break the law and use practices that show little respect for their consumers.

To demonstrate just how badly the industry is in need of additional government oversight, John Oliver created his own debt acquisition company to not just collect, but forgive $14,922,261.76 in medical debt for roughly 9,000 people in Texas. The feat topped Oprah Winfrey’s former record of the largest one-time giveaway in television history.

A Modest Suggestion for Pruning the English Language

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I recommend that the following two words be officially removed from the English language:

Neoliberal
Fascist

The purpose of words is to facilitate the communication of thoughts between human beings. I have conducted exhaustive research1 on Twitter and other popular social networks which conclusively proves that these two collections of phonemes now do the opposite of that. They are therefore not words. Let’s stop using them.

Guardian: American Cities "Cheat" on Lead Testing of Tap Water

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Guardian claims that “at least 33” large American cities use testing methods deliberately designed to undercount the presence of lead in tap water:

Of these cities, 21 used the same water testing methods that prompted criminal charges against three government employees in Flint over their role in one of the worst public health disasters in US history.

….Testing methods that can avoid detecting lead include asking testers to run faucets before the test period, known as “pre-flushing”; to remove faucet filters called “aerators”; and to slowly fill sample bottles. The EPA reiterated in February that these lead-reducing methods go against its guidelines, and the Flint charges show they may now be criminal acts.

….The EPA has warned since 2008 that pre-flushing is problematic and goes against the “intent” of regulations designed to detect lead….Further distortion is achieved through the removal of “aerators” — the small metal filters at the tip of faucets. These filters can collect lead particles and add to lead detected in tests.

I don’t know how serious this is. I suppose no one will know until these cities collect data properly and compare it to their old results. The EPA says it plans to release new testing rules in 2017.

Weekly Flint Water Report: May 21-27

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Here is this week’s Flint water report—late but not forgotten, due to some kind of weird screw-up at the Michigan DEQ site. First they didn’t have the data. Then eventually they did, but the spreadsheet was unreadable. Then they took everything down entirely. Then they finally reposted last week’s data. As usual, I’ve eliminated outlier readings above 2,000 parts per billion, since there are very few of them and they can affect the averages in misleading ways. During the week, DEQ took 392 samples. The average for the past week was 11.10.

Conservatives Win Pyrrhic Victory in Facebook War

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Facebook has caved in to conservative demands that it revamp its Trending Topics feed. Brian Fung describes how the algorithm works:

To be considered for a place in the Trending Topics portion of the site, a topic must generally be mentioned 80 times per hour or more. Facebook takes steps to exclude repeated events that don’t constitute news, such as the hashtag “lunch,” which usually produces more activity during lunchtime, the company said in its letter.

I’m glad to see that Facebook is on top of this. However, I suspect that conservatives are going to be disappointed in the results. Facebook has agreed to stop using external news sites to help it decide which topics are truly trending, and this is likely to have two effects: It will make the Trending Topics feed (a) stupider and (b) more liberal. After all, if you rely entirely on Facebook users, you’re relying on an audience that skews young and college educated. How likely is it that this will favor stories about Agenda 21 and Benghazi?

The New York Daily News Just Hit Bernie Sanders Where It Hurts

Continuing our coverage of the New York Daily News‘ coverage of the 2016 presidential election, here is the tabloid’s cover today:

Bernie Sanders’ poor track record on guns has become a point of much consternation. The Clinton campaign thinks the issue is a big winner against the Vermont senator and has worked hard to keep it front and center in advance of New York’s April 19th primary.
