Dr. Ben Carson, the Republican presidential front-runner, tried out a new response on Thursday to critics who say he lacks the experience to be president:

If nothing else, it’s good to see Carson has a plan to cope with rising sea levels.

Donald Trump Just Got Called Out At the Miss America Pageant

Mother Jones

Good evening.

The Miss America pageant was tonight. I didn’t watch it, but Twitter went all nuts when Miss Alabama Meg McGuffin called out Donald Trump. Here’s a video.

It seems pretty screwed up to me that we have beauty pageants in 2015 but that’s probably fodder for a future blog post.

Have a great night.

Mark Cuban Has the Dumbest Reason For Supporting Donald Trump

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Mark Cuban is a famous billionaire. He owns the Dallas Mavericks. He also appeared on a few episodes of the terrible TV show Entourage. He apparently is quite the fan of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign!

Why, you ask? Let him explain:

I don’t care what his actual positions are. I don’t care if he says the wrong thing. He says what’s on his mind. He gives honest answers rather than prepared answers. This is more important than anything any candidate has done in years.

He doesn’t care what his actual positions are? You can never know what is in a politician’s heart. Literally all you can go on are their actions and deeds.

This is bad reasoning and Mark Cuban should feel bad.

John Oliver Explains How Wealthy Sports Teams Are Scamming Taxpayers

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Every year, American cities across the country spend billions of dollar in public money in order to build shiny new sports stadiums we probably don’t need. As John Oliver explained on the latest Last Week Tonight, these stadiums are increasingly designed to look like “coked-up Willy Wonka” coliseums with expensive features like swimming pools and party cabanas.

“We don’t just help teams build stadiums, we let them keep virtually all the revenue those stadiums produce,” Oliver said on Sunday.

The segment goes onto show, stadium financing often hurts the local economy and surrounding businesses, even blocking cities from paying for crucial things like hospitals—all this as wealthy stadium owners only get richer with empty promises of economic growth.

“I’m not saying we shouldn’t have giant aquariums in ballparks full of terrified fish. Of course we should, this is America! If we don’t have them, no one else will! But we should not be using public money to pay for them.”

So, you’re a conservative and you’re upset that every state is going to be forced to be nice to gay people, so you take to Twitter to share your outrage and you reach for a simile. Not just any simile but, like, a good simile—one that has a strong tradition and is emotionally evocative and will let everyone know you mean business. Ding! Ding! Ding! You’ve got it!

Now you’re getting those faves, you’re getting those retweets, you’re getting those hateful replies. You’re liking this feeling. You’re flying high. You’re on a cloud. You’re on the moon, my love. You are a starship leaving this goddamned solar system! You want to chase the feeling. You want more. You want to never stop feeling like this. Why would anyone ever want to not feel like this? But how can you top Pearl Harbor?

You know what to do, baby. You know what to do:

Bryan Fischer, ladies and gentleman.

Think you’ve landed on the wrong page of Bernie Sanders’ campaign site? Fear not. In order to help guide you back to the page you were trying to reach, Sanders, who just announced his presidential bid, created the most terrific error page of any 2016 candidate. Just take a look:

Follow his directions: “Just scoot down to the bottom of the page and you’ll find your way back home to where you should be!” The site is further enhanced by the perfect URL: berniesanders.com/wtf.

Bravo, Bernie. The broken links may have turned into your first big win.

Holy Shit. This Is How the Duggars’ Homeschooling Curriculum Allegedly Dealt With Sexual Abuse.

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

All I can tell you about this tweet is that the Duggars are/were fans of Bill Gothard and that this sexual abuse “lesson” does appear to have been a part of his curriculum at one time.

Gothard himself has been the subject of sordid allegations.

Update: “This is what purity culture does. More than anything else, it silences victims.” —Samantha Field, whose thoughtful post “how Josh Duggar is getting away with it” served as Sarah Galo’s source for Gothard’s insane sexual abuse counseling sheet. Go read the whole thing.

Have you heard the news? Hillary Clinton is on the hunt for a new gig.

And in an effort to attract prospective employers, the former secretary of state just joined LinkedIn with her very own profile. She even dressed up her page with an article on how to “jump-start small business.”

Enjoy the imminent deluge of spammy messages, Hillary! Everyone deserves a distraction from “sensitive but unclassified” emails.

Donald Trump Is Such An Awful Idiot

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

There was an awful train derailment tonight outside of Philadelphia. Reports are still murky so I’m not going to pass on speculation. This post isn’t really about that though. It’s about Donald Trump, one of our country’s more well known pieces of shit.

He used the crash to launch into a predictably tasteless political rant which you can seek out if you want but it’s nothing special. At the end of it though he tweeted what may be the most perfectly hilarious awful tweet ever. So perfect is this awful tweet that I am almost suspicious that it is satire. (He later deleted it but not before I and 10,000 other people took screenshots.)

What that there were a Hell so that Donald Trump could burn.

Let John Oliver Explain How Standardized Testing Makes Kids Anxious and Vomit Under Pressure

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Every year, students around the country are subjected to an insane amount of mandatory, standardized testing. So much so, the average number of tests a student completes by the time they graduate high school is a staggering 113, according to the latest “Last Week Tonight.” As host John Oliver noted on Sunday, all the stressful bubble-filling is taking an inevitable toll—with teachers reporting their students throwing up under the pressure so often, official testing guidelines specifically outline how to deal with kids vomiting on their test booklets.

“Something is wrong with our system when we just assume a certain number of students will vomit,” Oliver said. “Standardized tests are supposed to be an assessment of skills, not a rap battle on ‘8 Mile’ Road.”

Watch below as Oliver explains how our education system arrived at this extreme point:
