Muhammad Ali’s Fist — Life Size?

Mother Jones

This is from the great Pictures on a Page, by Harold Evans. Originally published in Esquire in 1974.

But is it really life size? On the printed page, yes it is. On the web, who knows? It all depends on how your device scales it. That’s something that goes missing in the digital world. For the record, “life size” in this case is 173 mm wide from the left margin of the picture to the right. If you want to compare your fist to Ali’s—and yes, it really is kind of irresistible—zoom in and out until that’s how big the image is.

Unemployment Claims in 2016 Have Set a New Record Low

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Department of Labor announced today that the 4-week moving average of initial unemployment claims was 276,000 in May. “This marks 65 consecutive weeks of initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1973.”

Not bad—especially when you consider that the population of the country has increased by 50 percent since then. In fact, we missed a milestone earlier this year: adjusted for population, the number of initial unemployment claims since the beginning of 2016 has been the lowest in half a century. The economy still isn’t quite firing on all cylinders, but this is yet another sign that it’s doing pretty well.

News You Can Use: Gas Gauge Edition

Here’s a picture of the dashboard on my Mazda 3:

Answer: it points to the side of the car with the gas tank. This has become a standard feature of cars in the past few years, but apparently it’s still unknown to about 90 percent of the population. Not to readers of this blog, though. Now you know!

This may not seem very useful since you probably remember which side of the car your gas tank is on. But back in the day I used to drive a lot of rental cars, and this would have been pretty handy. I never paid attention to the gas tank, and you can’t see them from the side mirror, so about half the time I’d guess wrong and drive into gas stations on the wrong side. Mostly, of course, this was when I was headed back to the airport to turn in the car, and therefore in a little bit of a hurry, which made it all the more annoying.

But no more. No matter what car you’re driving now, you can instantly tell which side the gas tank is on. Progress marches on.

Running for President Can Be a Profitable Investment

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Washington Post has a long piece tonight about Donald Trump’s latest FEC filing, which shows that business has boomed during his presidential campaign. It’s a little hard to make sense of, but apparently Trump claims that revenue from his various businesses rose from $362 million to $557 million. However, about $150 million of that came from one-off sales, so it’s unclear how much his campaign has really boosted things.

You can decide for yourself how seriously to take this, but here’s the most important part of the story:

While Trump’s campaign issued a statement referring to the form as a tally of his personal “income,” it is actually a list of his companies’ gross revenue — a figure that does not factor in the costs of paying employees and running the companies. In addition, the FEC form does not account for debt interest payments, a potentially significant expenditure for Trump, who lists five loans of over $50 million each.

In other words, this is all pretty meaningless, since we have no idea how well run Trump’s company is. Generally speaking, though, a large corporation is doing well if it records pretax earnings of around 10 percent. For a company like Trump’s, maybe the average is more like 15-20 percent. Then again, it could be lower if his debt service is high. Who knows?

That said, a rough guess puts Trump’s income last year somewhere in the range of $40-$100 million. Not bad.

Hopper has learned how to take selfies. It turns out that opposable thumbs are entirely unnecessary. All you have to do is jump up on Daddy’s lap while he’s reading on his tablet and tell him to take a picture. She looks pretty smug about the whole thing, doesn’t she?

House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Thursday that he is “not ready” to endorse Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

“I’m just not ready to do that at this point,” Ryan told CNN‘s Jake Tapper.

“I think what a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard bearer that bears our standards,” he added.

In December, Ryan condemned Trump’s inflammatory plan to ban all Muslims from entering the country.

James Brown had a lot of famous friends in the audience when he played a concert in Los Angeles in 1983. First he called up Michael Jackson from the crowd, and then, at the two-minute mark in the video below, he called up Prince, who hopped on a guitar and upstaged two of history’s biggest musical legends.

There will never be another like Prince. R.I.P.

Samantha Bee Demonstrates How Frighteningly Easy it Is to Purchase a Gun

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

On the latest Full Frontal, Samantha Bee took us on her quest to rent the costume of the National Rifle Association’s esteemed gun safety mascot, Eddie Eagle. But doing so proved to be a surprisingly onerous process—one that required filling out an 18-page application and dealing with the group’s mandatory 20-day waiting period before anyone can get their hands on Eddie’s gear.

Compare that to the relatively simple task of acquiring a gun, whether it be online, at your run-of-the-mill gun shop, or at a gun show in New Mexico:

“Are you a felon?” one gun own seller in New Mexico asked a Full Frontal producer.

“No,” she replied.

“Ok.”

Another gun secured! As the episode goes on, Bee and her team are able to add to their arsenal with frightening ease, all while being repeatedly denied an elusive Eddie Eagle costume.

The New York Daily News Just Hit Bernie Sanders Where It Hurts

Mother Jones

Continuing our coverage of the New York Daily News‘ coverage of the 2016 presidential election, here is the tabloid’s cover today:

Bernie Sanders’ poor track record on guns has become a point of much consternation. The Clinton campaign thinks the issue is a big winner against the Vermont senator and has worked hard to keep it front and center in advance of New York’s April 19th primary.
