Despite decades of outrage over the widespread use of sweatshops and child labor overseas, cheap fashionable garments have continued to prove irresistible to American customers. On the latest Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said the appetite for such low-priced fashion has gotten to the point where Americans now purchase an average 64 new items of clothing every year.

“For the consumer, low prices are fantastic,” Oliver explained. “And nowadays those clothes will even look good because trendy clothing is cheaper than ever and cheap clothing is trendier than ever.”

But Oliver reminds us that all of the cheap fashion we’re scoring comes at an incredibly high moral price. Watch below:

Bringing Down Gaddafi

By Andrei Netto

PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Andrei Netto snuck into Libya in 2011, during the heady days of the Arab Spring, and found rebels of “noble, almost poetic aspirations.” He stayed long enough to see the revolution’s moral downfall, culminating in the execution of deposed dictator Moammar Gaddafi. This riveting account is a tale of mercenaries and freedom fighters, corrupt politicians, and war crimes on all sides. But Netto also highlights the humanity of the civilians caught in the middle, and their ongoing struggle for a stable and peaceful nation.

Film Review: Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll

Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll

ARGOT PICTURES

On the surface, Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten is a film about the flourishing rock movement that emerged following Cambodia’s independence from France in 1953. Director John Pirozzi saturates the first half with vintage footage of Cambodia’s ’50s and ’60s music scene, interspersing it with interviews with musicians who survived the ensuing horrors and relatives of those who didn’t. The infectious music blends Chuck Berry-like riffs with haunting traditional melodies. And even though you know it’s coming, the progression of coups, bombings, and genocide is shattering. “If you want to eliminate values from past societies,” notes a member of the Cambodian royal family ousted in a US-sponsored coup, “you have to eliminate the artists.”

Spring Chicken

By Bill Gifford

GRAND CENTRAL

You’ve got to be a tad loony to think you can defy death, and so it is with Bill Gifford’s cast of anti-aging researchers and obsessives, whose strategies range from testosterone shots to self-starvation. But nothing seems to beat sheer will: People who thrive with age—take the 75-year-old woman who runs a sub-seven-minute mile—don’t get there with magic pills, hormones, or even red wine. What they do is move around like crazy—”use it or lose it,” Gifford explains. In one chapter, he introduces us to Okinawa, home to the world’s highest concentration of centenarians, who’ve discovered the best longevity method of all: ikigai, a reason to get up in the morning.

We Have Some Good News For You About the Koala That Was Burned in the Fire

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

After a series of devastating bushfires ripped through Australia earlier this month, volunteers across the world quickly came to the rescue with custom-knitted mittens for the burned paws of koalas (way too many volunteers, it turns out). The poster koala that sparked the movement was Jeremy, whose heart-rending hospital room portrait quickly went viral.

Good news! Jeremy is fully recovered and back in the wild. From the BBC:

He has since made a complete recovery, says Aaron Machado, who operates the clinic that treated the animal… “The only thing he has to do now is get used to not having any more room service,” Mr Machado told the BBC.

Here’s to koalas everywhere!

Mitt Romney Won’t Run for President in 2016

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

It’s official: Mitt Romney will not seek the presidency for a third time. After some news outlets reported he would announce a run on a call with donors this morning, a statement leaked in which Romney said, “I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee.” Here’s a look back at what Mitt 3.0 could have been, as well as some highlights from 2012.

He was going to run as a liberal.

He had plans to be a born-again climate hawk.

He was going to face some resistance from the Kochs.

He had a new private equity conflict-of-interest problem.

We were deprived the chance to revisit the controversy over Romney’s lengthy history of outsourcing.

Also, this little problem:

Thanks for the memories, Mitt:
