Trump wants to eliminate the “Department of Environmental.” Colbert points out a problem.

Trump wants to eliminate the “Department of Environmental.” Colbert points out a problem.

On Wednesday night’s The Late Show Stephen Colbert chalked Donald Trump’s defeat in Wisconsin up to “things he has done and said” as well as “things he hasn’t said.”

For example, Trump has been notoriously heavy on talk, but light on actual policies. “But on Monday, Trump finally put that criticism to bed,” Colbert said, before the show cut to a Fox News clip of host Sean Hannity interviewing Trump about which wasteful government agencies he’d eliminate as president.

“The Department of Environmental,” Trump replied. “I mean, the DEP is killing us environmentally, it’s just killing our businesses.”

A federal Department of the Environmental, of course, doesn’t exist. (In fairness to Trump, New Jersey and the GOP frontrunner’s hometown of NYC* do have Departments of Environmental Protection or “DEP.”) Colbert, of course, couldn’t resist.

*Correction: An earlier version of this article said that New York state has a Department of Environmental Protection. That was incorrect. The author has been sentenced to setting up interviews with federal Department of Environmental agency officials.

John Oliver Explains Why Tuesday’s Elections—Not Trump or 2016—Demand Your Immediate Attention

Mother Jones

As he bluntly told Stephen Colbert a few weeks ago, John Oliver truly couldn’t “give less of a shit” about Donald Trump or the 2016 election.

Yet, as the Last Week Tonight host lamented on Sunday, the national conversation remains fixated on presidential candidates, largely ignoring several key races that could ultimately determine the expansion of Medicaid and Obamacare in their states. It’s an issue, according to Oliver, all Americans should pay close attention to, even if you don’t live in one of these three states.

“There are American lives at stake here, because a number of these elections could determine whether hundreds of thousands of people remain in or even fall into what’s known as the Medicaid gap,” Oliver said.

“I know that sounds like a terrible clothing chain where you can buy khaki hospital gowns sewn by children in India, but amazingly, it’s even worse than that.”

Hillary Clinton Tells Stephen Colbert: I Would Let Big Banks Fail

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Hillary Clinton appeared on the Late Show on Tuesday night, where she and host Stephen Colbert started out by discussing watching “bad TV” with husband Bill—House of Cards and the Good Wife are among the couple’s favorites—and whether it’s fun to run for president of the United States.

“Some days it really is fun,” Clinton said. “Some days it’s just very hard work. You do so many events, you do kind of lose track of where you are. But most days something happens during the day that really makes you feel like ‘Yes, I know why I’m doing this, I am so committed.'”

But it wasn’t all softball questions. After weighing in on topics like the middle class and Bernie Sanders—responses Colbert jokingly hit back as a “cheap trick” to say things people like—Clinton was then directly asked how she would handle an economic situation like the 2007 financial crisis and whether she’d let big banks fail.

The Democratic presidential candidate answered emphatically, “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”

Watch “Emperor” Obama Take Over Hosting Duties for Colbert

Mother Jones

“You’ve taken plenty of shots at my job. I’m going to take a shot at yours.”

And with that, President Obama seized control of a special D.C. edition of “The Colbert Report” last night, leading off by taking over hosting duties for the latest installment of “The Word,” or as the president promptly renamed, “The Decree.”

Later on, the two sat down and discussed everything from the midterm elections to the nuclear launch codes. Regarding immigration reform, Colbert asked his guest, “You realize you’re an emperor now…Why did you burn the Constitution and become an emperor?”

Colbert, who will be replacing David Letterman over at the “Late Show” soon, concluded the special appearance with a suggestion that melded both immigration legislation and Keystone into one bizarre policy proposal. The president declined: “Stephen, that sounds like a ridiculous idea. But that’s why you’re where you are, and I’m where I am.”

President Obama to Appear on “The Colbert Report”

Mother Jones

President Obama will have the distinct honor of appearing on one of the handful of episodes that remain before the nation must bid a sorrowful adieu to the institution that is “The Colbert Report.”

Host Stephen Colbert, who is replacing David Letterman over at the “Late Show,” announced the booking last night, summing it up as a great privilege to “be sitting down with the man who sat down with Bill O’Reilly.”

The episode will air Monday, December 8th and be broadcasted from George Washington University for a special D.C. edition. So pumped, we are.

Stephen Grosz

Genre: Psychology

Price: $11.99

Publish Date: May 28, 2013

Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company

Seller: W. W. Norton

An extraordinary book for anyone eager to understand the hidden motives that shape our lives. We are all storytellers—we create stories to make sense of our lives. But it is not enough to tell tales. There must be someone to listen. In his work as a practicing psychoanalyst, Stephen Grosz has spent the last twenty-five years uncovering the hidden feelings behind our most baffling behavior. The Examined Life distils more than 50,000 hours of conversation into pure psychological insight without the jargon. This extraordinary book is about one ordinary process: talking, listening, and understanding. Its aphoristic and elegant stories teach us a new kind of attentiveness. They also unveil a delicate self-portrait of the analyst at work and show how lessons learned in the consulting room can reveal as much to the analyst as to the patient. These are stories about our everyday lives: they are about the people we love and the lies we tell, the changes we bear and the grief. Ultimately, they show us not only how we lose ourselves but also how we might find ourselves.
