It’s Still World Cat Day

Mother Jones

I’m heading out to lunch, but before I do let’s continue with our bathtub theme for World Cat Day. Whenever Marian or I get up in the night to use the bathroom, Hopper zips in a few seconds later and immediately jumps into the bathtub. I’ve never figured out why. There’s nothing in the bathtub for her to play with, but that’s where she likes to be. However, she only likes it when one of us is in there doing our business. The rest of the time she shows no interest at all.

Lana Del Rey Cares Way More About “Intergalactic Possibilities” Than Boring, Old Feminism

Mother Jones

Famous singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey has a weird quote about “feminism” (and space exploration, I think) in the latest Fader cover story. Digest it here:

For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities. Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested…My idea of a true feminist is a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.

Okay.

The 27-year-old singer joins a chorus of female celebrities, including actress Shailene Woodley, who distance themselves from feminism, or from describing themselves as feminists. This is strange to hear (whether the famous person is female or male), simply because your average dictionary is very straightforward about the definition of the term “feminism.” It is as follows:

The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

It’s really that simple: Words have meanings. Maybe too many of us have, over the years, conflated the word “feminist” with “extreme, radical, militant, War-On-Men-waging individual?” I dunno. Anyway, Ann Friedman explains this general topic better than I ever could, and you should read her piece here.

This Is What It’s Like Arguing with Gun Nuts on the Internet

Mother Jones

Whenever there is another mass shooting in America—which is tragically to say, every few weeks in Americathe NRA and its allies flood talk radio, television, and the internet with crazy defensive ramblings about how guns don’t kill people, hippy. People kill people. and Hitler was into gun control too, jerk! Why do you love Hitler so much? etc etc… For sane people, this can be vexing.

Courtesy of Bobby Big Wheel, this bingo card pretty perfectly captures what it’s like to argue with a gun nut on the internet.

It’s Memorial Day. On this day, we honor the more than one million brave men and women who have given their lives fighting for the United States. Further, we honor that which they died fighting to preserve: the American way of life. It’s 2014 and today, right now, the American way of life involves accepting the very real possibility that you might get shot to death walking down the street for no other reason than bad luck. I somehow doubt many of them fought for that.
