Rick Perry Kicks Off Presidential Campaign With a Rap-Country Song No One Needed to Hear

Two felony counts for abuse of power and coercion charges by an Austin grand jury aren’t the only new features of Rick Perry’s second run for the White House. His official launch today also debuted quite the campaign song, adding a little bit of country and a little bit of rap to his bid. The lyrics, captured by Buzzfeed, below:

Rick Perry supporter, let’s protect our border. To hell with anyone who don’t believe in the USA, Rick Perry all the way.

I won’t back up, I don’t back down. I been raised up to stand my ground. Take my job, but not my gun. Tax my check till I ain’t got none. Cept for the good lord up above, I answer to no one.

Give me my right to vote, my right to tote. The weapon of my choice, don’t censor my voice.

As our own Kevin Drum recently asked, “Why do so many obvious losers think they can be president?”

Say goodbye to Yosemite’s largest glacier

Say goodbye to Yosemite’s largest glacier

roger.williams

Park visitors gaze at what remains of the Lyell Glacier.

Hasta la vista, glacier.

The world’s glaciers are withering quickly — researchers say they are contributing to nearly one-third of sea-level rise, despite holding just 1 percent of the planet’s surface ice. And while the glaciers in California’s Yosemite National Park aren’t the largest, they are suffering the same alarming fate as their icy ilk in other parts of the world.

Yosemite’s granite cliffs and valleys were carved during the Ice Age as glaciers expanded. Now these vestigial masses of ice are mostly retreating — and fast. The park employs a full-time glaciologist, Greg Stock, who recently returned from a trek to Lyell Glacier, which is the park’s largest. He told the L.A. Times that it had shrunk visibly since he made the same back-country hike last year:

Lyell has dropped 62% of its mass and lost 120 vertical feet of ice over the last 100 years. “We give it 20 years or so of existence —  then it’ll vanish, leaving behind rocky debris,” Stock said. …

Yosemite’s other glacier, Maclure, is also shrinking, but it remains alive and continues to creep at a rate of about an inch a day.

Lyell, however, hasn’t budged. It is the second largest glacier in the Sierra Nevada and the headwater of the Tuolumne River watershed, but it no longer fits the definition of a glacier because it has ceased moving.

“Lyell Glacier is stagnant — a clear sign it’s dying,” Stock said. “Our research indicates it stopped moving about a decade ago.”

Stock warned that when the glaciers disappear, steady water supplies that feed the park’s meadows and other ecosystems will disappear with them. ”We don’t know what the impacts of that will be on plants and animals that evolved with these ice flows,” he told the newspaper.

Friday Cat Blogging – 9 August 2013

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Domino was supervising my blogging-related program activities earlier this week, which mostly consisted of making it hard to use the mouse so that I had no choice but to pay more attention to her. As usual, it worked. The gimlet-eyed among you will notice on the far left a notepad that’s fallen over, a sure sign that Domino has been around. That little yellow pad is her absolute favorite place on my desk to scratch her chin.

This is Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, and my sister informs me that it’s also Shark Cat Week on YouTube. As near as I can tell, this is traditionally celebrated by dressing your cat in a shark costume and then letting it ride around the kitchen on a Roomba. Go figure. As it happens, I need to buy a new vacuum cleaner, and until now I hadn’t been considering a Roomba. But maybe I should.

It’s Amateur Hour (Again) in the House of Representatives

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

A friend emails me to provide today’s media/political analysis:

So, I’m just waiting for the inevitable piece from Ron Fournier asking why and how Obama and the Democrats could have let the Farm Bill debacle in the House occur. Or, how this demonstrates a lack of leadership in Washington, particularly by Obama. Or, how the leaderlessness of the White House is infusing into the House through some osmosis-like process and corrupting John Boehner.

Or, just the typical “I don’t know much about all this stuff, but I know that Obama is in the White House and the usually guaranteed bi-partisan Farm Bill died in the House, so there you go.”

Most of the reporting on this has been he-said-she-said stuff about which party is to blame for the bill going down in the House. But what very few of these pieces point out is that Democrats weren’t expected to produce more than 40 votes in the first place. In the end, they only managed to produce 24, thanks to Republican insistence on squeezing in one final gleeful, screw-you amendment at the last minute, courtesy of the GOP’s tea party wing. If they’d left well enough alone, they probably could have kept all 40 Democrats on board. But so what? Even if Democratic support had stayed firm, the bill still would have lost. It didn’t lose because of Democrats, it lost because the Republican leadership couldn’t control the amendment process and then couldn’t count noses in their own caucus. As Nancy Pelosi said, it was amateur hour.

25 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day without Buying Anything

How To Go Green With Your Energy

If you want to help the environment without breaking the bank, look no further! There are several ways to make your home greener without spending money you don’t have. Read this article for some quick and simple tips on how to go green at home, work, or while in the car!

As you ready yourself to make the switch to green energy, try getting a step ahead of the game by decreasing your present energy needs. By using less energy, it will be that much easier to switch to alternative sources because you won’t be using as much. Good ways to start include using less light in your home, shortening hot showers and using cool instead of hot water for laundry.

You should never use a small amount of warm water all at once. Doing this will just gradually increase your overall energy usage. Instead, try using all the warm water you plan on using immediately. For example, you should try having all your family members take a quick shower at once.

A good energy saving tip for the kitchen is to cut any food you are cooking into smaller pieces. This greatly reduces the time necessary to cook the item which means your appliances will not be running as long. This serves to both cut the amount of energy needed as well as reduce the amount of your electric bill.

Get a home energy audit. These are provided for free by most electric companies and they can really show you where you are using the most electricity. Once you realize where your usage is high, you can make green changes that will both reduce your bill and benefit the planet.

If you are wanting to conserve energy and go green, then consider buying a car that uses either natural gas, or is all electric. Both of these sources of energy are far cleaner than burning fossil fuels and reduce your carbon footprint. If you cannot afford one of these new cars, you can still help by driving less.

Turn off any light in your home that you are not using as one of the simplest ways to use green energy. Turning off unused lights saves energy by not providing power to areas of the home that will be wasted. Not only does it save energy, but saves you money as well.

If you are looking to live a more green and eco friendly life, try a micro hydropower system. These devices will use the current running water in your home through a turbine to produce energy, which is both renewable and better for the environment. Try this alternative if you’re looking to reduce your dependence on fossil fuels.

Use solar-powered outdoor lights. Outdoor lighting elements are a great place to use solar power, since there is easy access to sunlight. There are a wide range of lighting options to fit any decor. Not only does the solar-powered feature save on your energy bill, but it also makes these lights easy to install anywhere on your property.

Contact your current energy provider and see if they offer an option for you to use renewable-energy sources. Many providers harness renewable energy through solar or wind power and therefore, have this option available for their clients. However, you should keep in mind that this may cost a little bit extra.

Throw out your normal light bulbs, and use compact fluorescent bulbs instead. Often shortened to compact fluorescent bulbs use an amazing 75% less energy than the traditional incandescent bulbs. Plus, the CFL bulbs last up to ten times as long, meaning you are not only saving a lot of energy but a lot of money too!

As said in the beginning of the article, going green doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming. Alternative energy can save money while helping the environment! Installing new light bulbs or cleaning your filter can help, without sacrificing too much time or money. Remember these tips so you can go green!

Simply by getting information on natural environment such as Wheeling Composite Steel Deck you can develop your surroundings much more effectively. All these kinds of articles or blog posts are actually written by the article writer Jess Whatcott
