Climate Change Is Shrinking Reindeer and Devastating Their Herders

Reindeer are getting smaller and lighter as a result of climate change’s disruption to their food supply, researchers revealed during the British Ecological Society annual meeting in Liverpool this week.

The findings come by way of ecologists from the James Hutton Institute, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences who have been measuring reindeer in the high Arctic every winter since 1994. According to their measurements, adult reindeer have shown a 12 percent decrease in overall body mass over the years—from 121 pounds in 1994 to 106 pounds in 2010.

Researchers believe the stunted growth of reindeer is directly tied to increasing temperatures in the Arctic—a region particularly vulnerable to warming—over the past two decades. Among several speculated reasons, all linked to climate change, warmer winter temperatures bring more rain, which freezes when it falls onto snow, making it more difficult for reindeer to access food below the ice. For pregnant females, the resultant starvation causes them to abort or give birth to malnourished calves. Over the long term, this could also lead to “extensive die-offs” in the reindeer population, according to lead researcher Steve Albon.

Reindeer aren’t the only victims of a rapidly shifting Arctic climate—those who herd them have also fallen prey. The Sami peoples of northern Scandinavia consider reindeer a linchpin of their cultural identity. Climate change—on top of the existing mental strains that indigenous herders face from social stigma—has contributed to a widespread mental health crisis and mounting suicide rate among the Sami in recent years. According to Sami psychologist and researcher Petter Stoor, half of Sami adults in Sweden suffer from anxiety and depression, and an astonishing one-third of young herders have contemplated or attempted suicide.

As climate change intensifies, the reindeer herders stand to lose not only their livelihood, but their culture. “We are the nature people,” Frøydis Nystad Nilsen, a Sami psychologist, told the health news site STAT. “When you lose your land, you lose your identity.”

Don’t gloat over Ted Cruz’s loss. He’ll just go back to harassing climate scientists.

The 2016 presidential field lost one of its more vocal climate deniers when Ted Cruz suspended his campaign this week (Donald Trump will be picking up the slack there). But Cruz won’t disappear entirely. He’s still in the U.S. Senate serving a term through 2018, so he’ll be free to return to one of his favorite hobbies: terrorizing federal scientists, NASA, and climate advocates once more.

Cruz has often used his position as chair of the Subcommittee on Science and Space to elevate some of his favorite climate denier tropes — especially the (incorrect) point that over the “last 15 years, there has been no recorded warming.”

In December, Cruz held a hearing entitled “Data or Dogma” to “debate over climate science, the impact of federal funding on the objectivity of climate research, and the ways in which political pressure can suppress opposing viewpoints in the field of climate science.” He invited mostly climate change deniers to make his case that global warming is on pause. At another committee hearing last fall, Cruz grilled Sierra Club President Aaron Mair on the point that 97 percent of scientists agree global warming is human-caused.

Cruz’s other focus while chairing this committee has been to pressure NASA to abandon its Earth-focused studies of the climate.

Cruz will still have enough of a megaphone from the Senate to frustrate and confound any of us who believe in facts — and he won’t have the presidential campaign to distract him.

Scientists Undervalue Meticulousness By a Lot

According to a note in Nature, honesty and curiosity are the most highly prized traits among scientists.

That’s all well and good. I’m also happy to see perseverance and objectivity on the list. Also humility, attentiveness, skepticism, courage, and willingness to collaborate. But I’m a little dismayed that meticulousness barely even crack the top ten. Most of the greatest scientists in history were extraordinarily meticulous: Newton, Darwin, Galileo, Feynman, etc.

Meticulous attention to detail is how you turn all that curiosity and perseverance into lasting results. It’s also how you maintain your objectivity, your humility, and your skepticism. I hope that in their daily lives, scientists value meticulousness more than they do when they answer survey questions.
