Republican War on Obamacare Reaching Absurd New Heights

Mother Jones

We all know that Republicans are hellbent on sabotaging Obamacare any way they can. But the lengths they’re going to are pretty astonishing. A few weeks ago The Hill reported that some Republican congressional offices, which routinely help constituents navigate the federal government, plan to turn away callers with Obamacare questions. “We know how to forward a phone call,” said the always charming Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah).

Yesterday brought yet another wheeze as the state of Indiana released the projected cost of insurance on its Obamacare exchanges. The usual standard of comparison is for silver-level plans, but Indiana didn’t release that separately because then it would have been clear that Indiana’s costs were about the same as everyone else’s. Instead they munged together the bronze, silver, gold, and platinum plans in some unspecificed way, and did it for no apparent reason except that it allowed them to trumpet a supposed 72 percent increase in the cost of health insurance.

Who do they think they’re fooling? Nobody, I suppose, but it provides fodder for Fox hosts and right-wing radio talkers who don’t really care whether the numbers have been deliberately cooked. All they care about is having an outrageous number to bellow about on the air, and Indiana gave them one.

Sarah Kliff breaks down the con job here, if you want more details.

A Guantanamo Hunger Striker Tells His Story

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Marcy Wheeler tweets:

I’d really love some pollster to figure how what % of Americans know how many Gitmo detainees have been cleared for release.

I believe the answer is about 40 percent—but, like Marcy, I doubt that many people know this. Her tweet was prompted by an op-ed today in the New York Times by Samil Naji al Hasan Moqbel, a Yemeni hunger striker at Guantanamo who is being force fed:

I’ve been detained at Guantánamo for 11 years and three months. I have never been charged with any crime. I have never received a trial…The only reason I am still here is that President Obama refuses to send any detainees back to Yemen. This makes no sense…I do not want to die here, but until President Obama and Yemen’s president do something, that is what I risk every day.

Where is my government? I will submit to any “security measures” they want in order to go home, even though they are totally unnecessary.

Yemen’s previous administration prevented the release of many detainees by demanding enormous payments from the US before it would accept them. The current administration has changed course, and has requested that all Yemeni nationals be repatriated to Sana’a. But now it’s the U.S. that refuses to deal. Andy Worthington reports that after the failed underwear bomber plot:

Obama responded to a wave of hysteria by announcing a moratorium on releasing any cleared Yemenis from Guantanamo. That order remains in place two years and eight months later, even though it is a monstrous injustice to continue holding men cleared for release and to pander to populist fear-mongering by insinuating that the very fact of being Yemeni is tantamount to being a terrorist—or, at the very least, a terrorist sympathizer.

But it’s not entirely Obama’s fault, reports the Boston Globe:

Congress bears much of the blame, because lawmakers have included provisions in the annual defense authorization bill that make it harder to close the facility. They prohibit the use of funds to transfer detainees to the United States for trial in federal court and require the secretary of defense to certify that detainees cleared for release are sent to countries that have “agreed to take effective steps to ensure that the transferred person does not pose a future threat to the United States, its citizens or its allies.” That sweeping language has had a chilling effect. No one can give an absolute guarantee that detainees won’t go back to fighting, just as no one can ensure that criminals released from US prisons won’t go back to crime. As Charles Stimson, who headed detainee affairs under George W. Bush, points out: “You have to tolerate some kind of risk.”

….Obama should muster the political courage to stand up to Congress on Guantanamo. If his secretary of defense is unable to certify a transfer under the tough provisions, Obama retains the ability to transfer prisoners with a “national security waiver” — a power he has never used….A new, democratically elected government in Yemen is putting together a plan to take responsibility for its detainees. About a third of the 88 men from Yemen have already been cleared for release. Keeping them at Guantanamo just because of their nationality flies in the face of justice. The US government should support the democratic transition in Yemen by providing the financial, military, and intelligence support necessary to send them home and keep an eye on them.

Some detainees are tougher to deal with than others. But those who have already been cleared for release, and which Yemen is willing to accept, should be the easiest. Moqbel might or might not fall into this category (his status is unclear), but there are at least a couple dozen Yemenis who do. Obama should let them go.

The 6 Weirdest Theories About "The Shining"

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Stanley Kubrick’s classic has been terrifying, thrilling, and utterly confusing fans for over 30 years, leaving viewers groping for answers. What really possessed Jack Torrance? Why did pathological perfectionist Kubrick leave in obvious continuity errors? What’s up with the man-bear-pig? Obsessive fans are still trying to figure out exactly what went down at the Overlook Hotel, zealously poring over the placement of every prop and examining every frame of the film.

Room 237, a new documentary by Rodney Ascher, examines a handful of Shining conspiracy theories posited by both academic cinephiles and tormented laymen. Ascher has his own take—he sees the film as a Faustian homage, pointing to Jack’s deal with the devil for just one glass of beer—but says all of these readings carry weight. “A lot of the ideas can be pretty outrageous, but when you’re talking about a symbolic interpretation of a Freudian horror movie, even things on the surface are pretty crazy,” Ascher said. Here are six of the strangest, most chilling theories about the true meaning of the Kubrick classic:

1. It’s about the massacre of the American Indians.

Scatman Crothers as Dick Halloran and a can of Calumet The Shining/photo illustration Maggie Caldwell

Stuart Ullman, the hotel’s manager, gives the Torrance family a tour of the grounds just before vacating the Overlook for the winter and leaving them to their fate. He casually tosses out that the hotel just happens to sit atop an Indian burial ground. (Not like that’s ever been a problem before.) The film is loaded with Native American symbology, from the Navajo wall hangings in the great room to the pantry stockpile of Calumet baking soda cans, all bearing the brand’s iconic logo: a Native man in warrior headdress. The word “calumet,” notes one theorist, means “ceremonial pipe,” and the cans appear several times when characters are communicating telepathically with each other or plotting with the dead. According to this theory, Danny’s infamous visions of gushing red liquid streaming from the elevators actually represents the souls buried deep beneath the hotel, with the elevator cabin dropping down into the basement like a bucket in a well, delivering a bounty of blood upon its return to the surface. Gross.

Maybe Germany Actually Wants Cyprus to Leave the Euro

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I was noodling over Cyprus last night and a thought occurred to me. Maybe, from the perspective of Germany and the other core EU countries, a default and exit from the euro would be a good thing.

I’m not really serious about this, but here’s the pitch. Cyprus is tiny enough that default and exit wouldn’t have any actual effect on the broader EU economy. It would be a rounding error. And because (a) Cyprus is tiny, (b) Cyprus adopted the euro only five years, and (c) Cyprus has a unique status as an offshore banking haven for Russion billionaires, it would be fairly easy to convince the financial community that their default is a special case that doesn’t have any broader implications for the eurozone.

So the eurozone would be OK. But if Cyprus chooses this route, the Cypriot economy is going to be in shambles. Sure, in the long run, they might do OK by readopting the pound and devaluing it, but in the short term it would be ruinous. Residents wouldn’t just lose 6.5 percent of their savings, they’d lose something like a third of their purchasing power thanks to recession and devaluation. It would be a long, grinding disaster.

And perhaps that would be a very pointed object lesson for voters in Greece and Spain and Portugal that default and exit is even worse than the austerity the EU is insisting on. The implicit message would be: You might not like it, but you better go along if you know what’s good for you. Just look at what happened to Cyprus.

So….from the German perspective, Cyprus could provide a very cheap demonstration of the dangers of calling their bluff. Who knows? Maybe they think that would be worth it. This should give Cypriots pause for thought.

Watch: How Paper Gets Recycled

Paper makes up 29 percent of municipal solid waste in the U.S., according to the EPA, making it the most thrown away material in the country. At the same time, Americans recycle nearly 63 percent of used paper, evidence that people are getting the recycling message loud and clear.

But how is paper actually recycled? This video entry in Recyclebank’s “The Cycle” series pulls back the curtain on the complexities of the process:
