"Selma Is Now": John Legend and Common Just Gave An Amazing Oscar Speech

John Legend and Common’s “Glory” from Selma just won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Legend and Common gave a wonderful, heartfelt, important speech.

“Selma is now,” Legend began. “The struggle for justice is now. The Voting Rights Act that they fought for fifty years ago is being compromised right now in this country today. Right now the struggle for justice is real. We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850. When people march with our song, we want to tell you: we see you, we are with you, we love you, and march on.”

Earlier they delivered an amazing performance of the song. Everyone was in tears.

Storm that already hit Mexico turns into a hurricane, threatens to strike again

More storm-blown devastation is headed for Mexico, which has already been hammered by the remnants of hurricanes on its east and west coasts during the past week. The tropical storms left at least 80 dead, with dozens more still missing.

And as Mexicans brace for a hurricane that has formed off its west coast, meteorologists are warning U.S. Gulf of Mexico residents that a tropical storm could reach there next week.

Tropical storm Manuel hit Mexico’s western coastline on Sunday before heading back over the Pacific Ocean. But before it left it dumped enough rain to trigger a landslide in a mountainside coffee-growing village, burying homes and leaving 58 people unaccounted for. Tropical storm Ingrid hit the county’s east coast at about the same time, wreaking carnage and leaving tourists stranded in Acapulco.

Since returning to the ocean, Manuel has been picking up strength. Early Thursday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that Manuel was a Category 1 hurricane that was “crawling” northward — back in the direction of Mexico’s coastline. From an A.P. report:

The storm that devastated the Pacific resort over the weekend regained strength on Wednesday and became hurricane Manuel, taking a route that could see it make landfall on Mexico’s north-western coast. It would be a third blow to a country still reeling from the one-two punch of Manuel’s first landfall and hurricane Ingrid on Mexico’s eastern coast.

Meanwhile, meteorologists are warning that a tropical storm appears to be forming over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula that may veer north and slam into the U.S. Gulf Coast. From USA Today:

Once it forms, the storm is expected to wander around the Gulf for a while, and potentially could hit the U.S. Gulf Coast next week, according to some of the computer models that meteorologists use to forecast weather, says Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters.

Regardless of its exact track, heavy rain from the system is likely to drench part of northeastern Mexico and the Texas coast this weekend, says AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. Flash floods are possible along the Texas coast, along with rough surf and strong rip currents, he adds.

In eastern Mexico, rain from the storm “could cause life-threatening floods and mudslides over areas already impacted by torrential rains during the past several days,” the hurricane center forecasts in an online report.

The wild coastal weather follows what had been a calm summer free of hurricanes. These recent storms struck just as we passed the traditional peak time for such tempests, but the season still has a long way to go:

So Far, Cyprus Remains Unique

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The situation in Cyprus has gone from bizarre to laughable to chaotic in just a matter of days, but the question I asked a few days ago remains on the table: Is Cyprus unique? Are investors buying the sales pitch that whatever happens, it has no larger meaning for Europe’s other troubled economies? Ryan Avent says yes:

The most striking thing about the situation is that broader markets are taking assurances that Cyprus is a unique case at face value. European equities are flat for the week, and yields on peripheral sovereign debt have scarcely budged. Contagion looks like a non-issue. For that, at least, we can be thankful. Unless it leads to European Commission complacency, of course, leading officials to drive an even harder bargain—and possibly precipitate the sort of action, like a Cyprus exit, that might just send markets into a proper swoon. Things, we should have learned by now, can always get worse.

As with everything to do with the EU economy, there are no good answers for Cyprus. Just bad answers and (we hope) slightly less bad answers. So far, though, it looks like Cyprus’s woes aren’t affecting Spain or Portugal or Greece. They still have intractable problems that appear nearly impossible to solve, but at least they haven’t gotten any more impossible over the past week.

Paul Ryan Does Not Accept the Tax Increases in the Fiscal Cliff Deal. Not At All.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Why does everyone keep asking Paul Ryan why his 2014 budget accepts the fiscal cliff tax increases instead of trying to repeal them? I mean, sure, technically he’s working off a baseline that includes the increases, but here’s his tax plan:

Substantially lower tax rates for individuals, with a goal of achieving a top individual rate of 25 percent.

There is, literally, no further detail about this in his 91-page document, but that’s still clear enough. The fiscal cliff deal increased top marginal rates from 36 percent to 39.6 percent. Ryan’s plan is based on reducing top rates to 25 percent. In other words, not only does he want to get rid of the 39.6 percent rate, he wants to make it even lower than it was before the fiscal cliff deal. He doesn’t accept the fiscal cliff increases at all.

Right? What am I missing here?

UPDATE: OK, I guess I get it. In last year’s plan, Ryan’s revenue target was 18.7 percent of GDP by 2022. In this year’s plan, his target is 19.1 percent of GDP by 2023. So he’s accepting higher revenues, which, it turns out, is actually the main way that he achieves a balanced budget within ten years.

Nonetheless, he rather decidedly doesn’t accept the higher rates in the fiscal cliff plan, and doesn’t provide any details about how he intends to meet his revenue target with a top rate of 25 percent.

USDA says crops will do better but food prices will do worse

USDA says crops will do better but food prices will do worse

It’s more cold comfort for drought-stricken farmers this week, and I don’t mean the snow.

USDA chief economist Joe Glauber was all sunshine this Thursday in announcing that normal spring weather is expected to improve corn and soybean yields by huge percentages over last year’s tiny drought-stricken crops. Bigger yields mean tinier prices — Glauber said corn would be down about a third from last year, soy would drop more than a quarter, and wheat would be down about 11 percent.

From the South Dakota Argus Leader:

The recovery should send prices for most oilseeds and grains sharply lower, providing a much-needed reprieve for livestock, dairy and poultry producers struggling with high feed costs, and relief down the road for consumers who have paid more for food at their local grocery store. …

“The critical factor that people will be following is weather,” Glauber said at the department’s annual outlook forum. “While the outlook for 2013 remains bright, there are many uncertainties.”

Way to bury the lede, Glauber. No matter how many times Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says “American agriculture is quite resilient,” there still remains the fact that American agriculture is also in crisis, and forecasters are expecting more hot and dry weather this year.

And even though industrial prices are dropping, the savings won’t trickle down to consumers for at least quite some time — the USDA anticipates food prices will rise this year between 3 and 4 percent.

Richard Volpe, an economist with USDA’s Economic Research Service, said the evidence of last year’s drought is just now starting to really have an effect on consumer prices at the retail level, resulting in higher costs for everything from meat to corn syrup.

Dammit, if it were only meat and corn syrup and not also everything in between…
