Apparently Andrew Puzder has withdrawn his nomination to be Secretary of Labor. “He’s very tired of the abuse,” a friend said. This was awkward wording, since the withdrawal came after Oprah Winfrey handed over tape of Puzder’s ex-wife on Oprah in 1990 claiming that he had abused her. Also after revelations that he had hired an illegal immigrant as a housekeeper and failed to submit payroll taxes for her. And after an increasing number of Republicans said they were “on the fence” and basically told President Trump his nomination was dead. Also after the Breitbart wing of the party kept up a steady campaign of complaints that Puzder was too damn soft on immigration.

The upshot is that Trump will now nominate someone who’s probably just as anti-labor as Puzder, but also a fire-breathing wall supporter. Hooray.

Hey, take a look at this. Yet another revision is in, and the Commerce Department now estimates that third-quarter GDP grew at a sizzling 5.0 percent rate, following a nearly-as-good 4.6 percent rate in the second quarter. Part of this is still a make-up for poor growth in the first quarter, but it’s good news nonetheless. The economy really does seem to have found a new gear this year:

Tuesday’s report showed stronger-than-expected spending by U.S. consumers, particularly on services like health care. Fixed nonresidential investment also was revised up, signaling more spending by businesses on new buildings and research and development.

“There is a positive feedback loop going on at the moment,” Mike Jakeman, global analyst for the Economist Intelligence Unit, said in a note. “Job creation is running at the strongest rate for 15 years. More people in work means more income, which means more private spending, which means more business investment, which means more hiring.”

Corporate profits are also up, and the stock market is at new highs every day. Wage growth still needs to get stronger, but it showed signs of life last quarter. All things considered, five years after the Great Recession technically ended, we’re finally doing pretty well.

Last week, a Native American tribe in Northern California ran a new TV ad during the NBA Finals that targeted the racist name of the Washington football team. “Unyielding. Strong. Indomitable,” a narrator intones at the end. “Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t?” The ad then cuts to a picture of a helmet with the team’s logo.

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver used President Obama’s first visit to American Indian land to segue into the battle over the R-word. “For the average American,” he joked, “that ad should tug at 1/16th of your heartstrings and make the rest extremely guilty.” But then Oliver & Co. went a step further: They made their own anti-Redskins video.
