Facebook suffered a brief outage today. When these kinds of things happen—and these kinds of things tend to happen—the key is to not lose your head. Don’t panic. Stretch your legs. Go for a walk. Check out Twitter. Check out Tumblr. Check out the real world. Whatever you do, don’t call the police.

Just remember: You’re going to get through this.

Watch John Oliver Take on the Death Penalty on “Last Week Tonight”

On Sunday’s episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver weighed in on the recent botched execution in Oklahoma, the president’s response to it, and the death penalty in general. “The death penalty is like the McRib,” Oliver says. “When you can’t have it, it’s so tantalizing. But as soon as they bring it back, you think, ‘This is ethically wrong. Should this be allowed in a civilized society?'”

Here’s more from Oliver:

It costs up to 10 times more to give someone the death penalty than life in prison. So what a death sentence is really saying is, “Hey! This is America! And the way we treat the most despicable members of our society is by spending the entire budget of the Lord of the Rings trilogy on them.” So what we know now is the death penalty is expensive, potentially kills innocent people, and doesn’t deter crime. And here is where it gets hard—harder than is potentially appropriate for a comedy show late on a Sunday night. But if we are going to answer difficult and profound questions…the toughest one is probably if someone is guilty of committing a horrible crime, and the family of the victim want the perpetrator executed, do we want to live in the kind of country that gives that to them? I would say no. You might, very reasonably, say yes…But it’s a question that is going to need an answer.

Rent a Live Tree

Many nurseries now offer the option to rent out live trees, and some even come fully decorated. The renter simply waters the tree throughout the season, then takes it back to the nursery to be cared for until the next year.

Get a Plantable Bulb

No tree-renting nurseries near you? Why not get a plantable bulb tree? After the holidays, you can plant it outdoors, further lowering your carbon footprint.

Decorate an Outside Tree

Decorate your yard and your tree at the same time by planting and decorating an outside Christmas tree. Another perk — you get to appreciate it year-round, not just during the holidays.

Recycle

Check out these rad women cyclists gearing up to take the lane

There’s a lot to feel terrible about lately. I mean, you saw that Keystone pipeline environmental impact report from the State Department, right? You forgot? Oh no, don’t cry! Look, here’s something to feel good about: The National Women’s Bicycling Forum in Washington, D.C., today is championing ladies who ride.

Female bikers still make up a small minority of cyclists — they accounted for less than one-quarter of all bike trips in 2009 — and Women Bike is determined to change that. “As the energy and momentum around women cycling grows nationwide, we need to share our collective knowledge, build a network of female leaders and start working on targeted programs that put more women in the saddle and at the forefront of the movement,” writes Women Bike. “Women Bike will empower more women to bicycle and become engaged in the diverse leadership opportunities of the bicycle movement — as advocates, engineers, retailers, manufacturers and policy makers — through networking, knowledge sharing, resources and inspiration.”

Earlier last month, Women Bike released a report about the economic impact of ladies on two wheels. “Though underrepresented in many aspects of the bicycle movement, there’s growing evidence that women hold the purse strings when it comes to the future success of the bike industry,” they wrote.

If you’re the boundary-busting lady already navigating the sea of cycling dudes, or an aspiring one nervous about starting up, get some support. Check out the #womenbike tweets for feel-good inspiration and facts on women and biking, some group therapy sessions on how badly women are treated at bike shops, important thoughts on women of color as a cycling contingent (all love for Ovarian Psycos), a burlesque bike dancing show, and some inspired calls for action.
