Last week you could barely see Domino’s face, so this week we get a close-up. Here she is outside in the summer sun enjoying a chin smooch from Marian.

In other cat news, click here to read about Coco, the lovely Siamese Wi-Fi sniffing cat from Virginia. If I tried this with Domino, she would sniff out my Wi-Fi and….that’s about it. She doesn’t roam much, and these days even less than usual. I don’t think she’s ventured more than ten feet from a doorway in years.

Domino’s new favorite snoozing spot is the closet in our master bedroom. Naturally, knowing that everyone would want to be kept up to date on this development, I took a picture. Unfortunately, it turns out that cameras need a stream of photons to work properly, and the inside of a closet doesn’t have many. So all I got were a bunch of black blurs. Soon enough, though, Domino saw the camera and came out. So I followed her over to the water dish, and eventually took a picture there. Even with plenty of help from Mr. Photoshop, however, it wasn’t very good either. So I waited. Eventually, Domino went back into the closet and curled up, and this time I took some pictures with the flash.

Which picture to use? I hate flash pictures. I especially hate them when they basically lie—making a dark closet look brightly lit, for example. But the other picture was pretty lousy. Decisions, decisions. In the end, I opt for lousy but honest. Let’s call it “Still Life With Two Cats” just to make it seem a little more refined. Like Domino.

Unless you’re down in Rio watching the World Cup, tomorrow marks the beginning of summer. And you know what that means: lots of snoozing in the sunshine for Domino. Yesterday she got a head start, seeking out sunny spots in the garden that are free from the evil mockingbirds. Not that she really cares about them. They can mock away and she just yawns. I think they’ve even given up their dive-bombing routine since Domino so obviously poses no threat to their lifestyle. Mankind may have fallen centuries ago, but here at Casa Drum the critters live in a state of prelapsarian laziness.

I know that I’ve put up versions of this photo before, but I like it a lot, so here’s another one taken earlier this week. The cat outline is so stark you’d almost think it was a fake shadow dropped in via Photoshop (a la MST3K), but it’s real. My Photoshop skills don’t extend to stuff like this.

One of these days, I’ll get the perfect photo, taken at just the right time of day to catch the light best and just the right time of year for maximum foliage and with Domino posed in just the right way. Someday! Unfortunately, whenever Domino sees me pointing the camera at her, she gets up and trots over, so I don’t usually have much time to get a good shot. You can’t tell from this photo, but she’s looking straight at the camera, and sure enough, she got up and headed my way just a few seconds later. Catblogging is trickier than it looks.

This is nature red in tooth and claw. Today, Domino can barely even rouse herself to stare disdainfully at the camera. To make up for her lethargy, however, we have additional wildlife blogging this week. Our mama hummingbird has built herself a little hummingbird nest and is now patiently waiting for her teensy tiny little eggs to hatch. When I took this picture, Domino was plonked out about five feet away, blissfully unaware that anything was going on. Jasmine probably would have scoped this situation out pretty quickly and figured out a way to shinny up the bush and snag the eggs. But Domino? Anything more difficult to hunt than a bowl of cat food is just not on her radar. At our house these days, the wildlife all lives in a state of peaceful coexistence.

If Vermeer painted cats, perhaps this is what a Vermeer cat would look like. All Domino needs is a pearl earring and a slightly more beguiling expression on her furry mug. Unfortunately, she’s sporting her all-too-common disdain for the stupid black box that I keep pointing in her direction while she’s trying to take a nice, peaceful nap.

And now for one last fundraising pitch. We’re getting close to the $100,000 goal for our investigative reporting fundraiser, and we have a few days left to get there. So how about a wee donation? If you value our reporting—or just want me to leave Domino alone so she can get her beauty rest—please donate $5 to the Mother Jones Investigative Fund. If you can afford it, make it $10. We’ll put it to good use. Here’s how to make a contribution:

Last weekend’s rain has obviously traumatized Domino. Sunny skies may have returned to Southern California since then, but Domino has spent all week hiding in a blanket cave anyway, just in case the rain clouds return. Her humans failed her once, after all. There’s no telling when we’ll fail her again.

When we watch TV, Domino watches TV. And since Domino has good taste, she almost always curls up with Marian, not me. (I’ll do, but only in a pinch, if Marian isn’t around.) So this was us last night. We were watching the Olympic slopestyle coverage (verdict: meh), and Domino was watching us. Then she fell asleep. Eventually, we did too.

Here it is, our final quilt of the year. The design is a “blooming nine patch.” (The nine-patchy nature of the quilt might not be obvious at a distance. Click here for a close-up. If you look carefully, you’ll see that every other square is 3×3 nine-patch.) It’s machine pieced and machine quilted, and it’s the only quilt Marian has designed specifically to coordinate with our house. (It matches the drapes.) And since this is our final quilt, it’s fitting to spotlight the person responsible for this year’s quiltfest. In this year’s final catblogging picture, Marian is doing her best to get Domino to cooperate with the camera, and as you can see, she succeeded admirably.

And now for one more year-end pitch. The most important part of Mother Jones isn’t this blog, it’s the serious investigative reporting we do. As the PEN Award judges put it, we’ve become an “internationally recognized powerhouse…influencing everything from the gun-control debate to presidential campaigns.”

But it takes money to do this, so we’re holding a fundraiser right now for our investigative reporting fund. If you value our independent voice, please contribute a few dollars. We’ll make sure your gift will immediately go to support Mother Jones’ reporting. Here are the links:
