American Public Says It Would Rather Have a Beer with Mike Pence Than Tim Kaine

I’m now turning into some of the post-debate blather. The general consensus seems to be that Tim Kaine had the facts on his side; Mike Pence repeatedly refused to defend Donald Trump; and Kaine did a good job of keeping Trump’s cretinism front and center. But Pence was calmer, and therefore he won.

CNN’s instant poll bears this out. Respondents thought Kaine defended his boss better; was more knowledgeable; and attacked more.

But! Mike Pence was judged more likeable, and therefore he won the debate 48-42 percent. The American public has spoken: they’d rather have a beer with Mike Pence, and that makes him the winner. Some things never change.

On the bright side, though, we will always have Mike Pence complaining that Kaine had “whipped out that Mexican thing again.”

Trump Goes to Mexico and Everyone Is Bored

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I’m back from lunch and it’s time to catch up on Donald Trump’s visit to Mexico. How did it go?

Apparently the answer is “meh.” After all his big talk about Mexico paying for his wall, Trump didn’t bring it up once he got face to face with Enrique Peña Nieto. I gather he didn’t bring up much of anything else either. Even Twitter seemed bored by the whole thing.

On the bright side, Trump didn’t say anything too barbarous, which is being hailed by Republicans as Trump acting “presidential.” The soft bigotry of low expectations comes to the rescue once again.

Let’s Hear It for Kevin, the Coolest Kid Going Back to School

This fourth grader from Texas just entered the fourth grade at a new school and he could not be more thrilled. Because as Kevin recently revealed to a local reporter, after he conquers the fourth grade, he’s going to master the fifth grade, and then college. Or is it high school? Maybe preschool.

“I don’t even know the orders anymore!” Kevin said, clearly exasperated by his own enthusiasm.

He continued by taking the opportunity to protest his mother’s insistence that he wear a helmet while riding his bike because he is not a baby anymore and no longer needs “protected gear.” Kevin also told the reporter he is pumped to make more friends at his new school, as he only had one friend at his first.

“I am hoping I can make more friends than just one.”

To all the other kids at Kevin’s old school, let it be known you clearly missed out.

Two days after a campaign shakeup that left his leadership role in doubt, and after a series of damaging reports about his work with a Russian-backed Ukrainian political party, Paul Manafort resigned from his post as chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign on Friday morning.

As everyone knows, the best cat toy is also the cheapest: a three-foot piece of string. But everyone also knows that you can make anything better by putting it on a stick. Hot dogs. Grilled peppers. Ice cream bars. Three-foot pieces of string.

With that in mind, yesterday we drove by the animal shelter and picked up a few new toys for the cats. One of them, of course, was the ever-popular feather-on-a-string-on-a-stick. So behold, Hilbert and Hopper at play. Note the color commentary from Marian at the beginning and Hilbert’s graceful belly flop on top of Hopper at the end.

Health Care Journalists Love Homeopathy

Mother Jones

From Alex Tabarrok:

This isn’t even the worst of it. I once got randomly assigned to a doctor who listened to my complaints and suggested some exercises. I went back two weeks later for a follow-up, and told her that nothing had changed. She was perplexed, and suggested a couple of other things I might try. Also this: “Or you might want to try homeopathic remedies. You can find them at most health food stores.”

I got out of there as fast as I could and never saw her again.1

Also, it turned out the exercises she assigned me were making things worse. When my regular doctor came back from vacation, he ordered me to stop immediately.

1One friend, who obviously tries to see the bright side in people, suggested that she didn’t really believe in homeopathy, but just wanted to prescribe some kind of placebo. Since lots of people seem to believe in homeopathy, she tossed it out in case I was one of them.

Maybe. But I didn’t feel like staying around to find out.

Trump Advisors Admit That His Tax Plan Was Just a Big Con

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Trump campaign is working on a few “tweaks” to his tax plan:

An updated version of Donald Trump’s tax cut will be about one-third the size of the previous $10 trillion version, two campaign advisers said on Wednesday.

One-third! Down from $10 trillion to $3 trillion. I guess when you’re as fabulously wealthy as Donald Trump, $7 trillion hardly seems worth fussing over.

We’ve known all along that Trump’s “policy” proposals were mostly meaningless, but this is sure a brazen confirmation. I can’t wait for his new wall proposal: “We’ve tweaked it from 2,000 miles to 600 miles, and that’s already built. Mr. Trump gets things done!”

California Projects Big Obamacare Increase in 2017 — But Rates Are Still Way Under Original Projections

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Obamacare rates are going up in California:

Premiums for Californians’ Obamacare health coverage will rise by an average of 13.2% next year — more than three times the increase of the last two years and a jump that is bound to raise debate in an election year.

….Two of the state’s biggest insurers — Blue Shield of California and Anthem Inc. — asked for the biggest hikes. Blue Shield’s premiums jumped by an average of more than 19%, according to officials, and Anthem’s rates rose by more than 16%.

That’s gonna hurt. And it’s going to be a big political football too. Just keep in mind what I told you a few weeks ago: Obamacare rates have been way under projections ever since the program started in 2014. Even if premiums go up 13 percent nationwide, the average will still be around $4,746, far less than the $5,616 the Congressional Budget Office originally projected for 2017.

China Gets Crushed in Hague Tribunal Over the South China Sea

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

For the past year, an international tribunal in the Hague has been pondering China’s claim to own the entire South China Sea. China has refused to participate in the trial because they were afraid they might lose. And lose they did:

An international tribunal in The Hague delivered a sweeping rebuke on Tuesday of China’s behavior in the South China Sea, including the construction of artificial islands, and found that its expansive claim to sovereignty over the waters had no legal basis.

….“It’s an overwhelming victory. We won on every significant point,” said the Philippines’ chief counsel in the case, Paul S. Reichler. “This is a remarkable victory for the Philippines.”

But then there’s this:

While the decision is legally binding, there is no mechanism for enforcing it, and China, which refused to participate in the tribunal’s proceedings, reiterated on Tuesday that it would not abide by it.

So it’s a moral victory, but not much else. Still, China cares about its international standing, no matter how much they bluster otherwise. This might a first step toward getting them to enter into serious negotiations over ownership of the various rocks, reefs, and islands of the South China Sea—all of which are governed by different rules regarding maritime rules and economic zones. Time will tell.

I really don’t think I can face another few hours of reading the news, so I’m calling it a day. There’s plenty of good coverage of the day’s events over at the mothership and at every other news organization on the planet. I’ll be back on Monday, and in the meantime stay calm, stop obsessing over finding someone to blame, and do something nice for someone.

Also: Hilbert is not happy with us humans. He wants us to get our act together.
