Oklahoma’s cyclones were all kinds of freaky

Not only did Friday’s tornado outburst in Oklahoma lead to at least 20 deaths, but analysis by NOAA has revealed that it included the widest tornado ever recorded in the U.S. and one twister that spun the wrong way.

The diameter of the El Rino tornado, which on Friday killed three famous weather chasers, reached a mind-boggling and record-breaking 2.6 miles. Both the El Rino cyclone and the Moore tornado, which struck nearby a week earlier, were rated EF5, the most damaging type of cyclone on the Enhanced Fujita scale. From LiveScience:

“To have two EF5s within less than two weeks in the same general area — that’s highly unusual,” [University Corporation for Atmospheric Research scientist Jeff] Weber told LiveScience. “Off the top of my head, I haven’t heard of it happening before.”

The tornadoes were made possible by “perfect” tornado conditions in the area, which have been intermittent for weeks, Weber said. Specifically, the alignment of the jet stream is bringing dry, cold air down from the north and allowing it to interact with warm, moist air from off the Gulf of Mexico, which sets up a volatile situation.

Like a wedge, the cold air collides with the warm air and causes it to rise, since warm air is less dense, Weber said. This rising warm air has created thunderstorms that have, in turn, spawned tornadoes.

It’s not just the size and power of the tornadoes that was remarkable. NOAA says that one of the tornadoes that struck Friday was a rare anticyclonic tornado:

You might think that an anticyclonic tornado would work in reverse of a typical tornado, replacing house roofs and putting cars back where they were before the normal tornado struck. But in fact, an anticyclonic tornado spins clockwise, whereas most other Northern Hemisphere storms spin counterclockwise.

From The Washington Post‘s Capital Weather Gang:

Leading tornado researcher Joshua Wurman (of the Center for Severe Weather Research) and his team were in the field monitoring the deadly EF5 twister when they spied another funnel, but spinning backwards, on their two “Doppler on Wheels” mobile radar units.

“At that point we bailed east towards Oklahoma City,” Wurman said. “I’m very happy my team had a radar out there. We only knew about [the anticyclonic tornado] because of the radar; otherwise we may have driven into it.”

Amazingly, Wurman’s encounter was not El Reno’s first with cyclonic and anticyclonic tornado pairings. On April 24, 2006, such a duo touched down in the area.

Monsanto says opponents may be to blame for GMO wheat escape

A week after word got out that unapproved GMO wheat was found growing on an Oregon farm, Monsanto has announced the results of an internal investigation into the mysterious outbreak. The results can be summarized thusly: “Nothing is wrong at our end and everybody’s crops are safe. Maybe our opponents planted our freak wheat to try to hurt us.”

From the Associated Press:

A genetically modified test strain of wheat that emerged to the surprise of an Oregon farmer last month was likely the result of an accident or deliberate mixing of seeds, the company that developed it said Wednesday.

Representatives for Monsanto Co. said during a conference call Wednesday that the emergence of the genetically modified strain was an isolated occurrence. It has tested the original wheat stock and found it clean, the company said.

Sabotage is a possibility, said Robb Fraley, Monsanto chief technology officer.

“We’re considering all options and that’s certainly one of the options,” Fraley said.

Sabotage aside, many scientists aren’t buying the company’s assurances that there’s no reason to worry about GMO wheat infecting the food supply. From Bloomberg:

Monsanto said that it has since [last week] tested 31,200 seed samples in Oregon and Washington and found no evidence of contamination.

That’s not enough to convince some researchers that this genetic modification, not cleared for commercial sale, won’t be found in some wheat seeds.

“We don’t know where in the whole chain it is,” said Carol Mallory-Smith, the weed science professor at Oregon State University who tested the initial wheat plants and determined they were a genetic variety Monsanto had tested. “I don’t know how Monsanto can declare anything. We obviously had these plants in the field.” …

“Sure they tested it, but that doesn’t mean it’s all clean,” David Andow, a professor of entomology at the University of Minnesota, said in an interview. “It just means it’s not so widespread that it could be detected easily.”

Although it’s been widely reported that Monsanto ended field trials of its genetically modified Roundup Ready wheat in 2005, we recently shared the news that the company resumed such field trials in 2011.

So, even while Monsanto is deliberately planting its deeply unpopular GMO wheat on test plots in two states, its officials are suggesting, without any evidence, that the company’s opponents — people who oppose or even fear GMO crops — are responsible for the rogue outbreak in Oregon. Right.

A recent study out of Rice University has predicted hardship for biofuel production as a result of climate change. While we agree that fossil fuel-induced climate change will indeed wreak havoc on agriculture writ large, it’s important to clear up a few points from this study. The paper claims that because our climate will become increasingly harsh and unpredictable, we will not be able to grow as many crops and what we do produce will need more water. But what these researchers don’t account for is the innovation that America’s farmers have shown each and every year in dealing with unforgiving weather patterns. Instead of hypothesizing about what farming will look like in 40 years, let’s look at what we’ve done in the past to inform our predictions of what will happen in the future.

We have been in drought for years, and that should have hurt production. But according to this report by Field to Market, which looked at 1980-2011, we’ve been handling it well:

Production is up: corn production has doubled
Land use is down: we use 1/3 less land to produce a bushel of corn
Water use is down: just 13% of the nation’s cropland is irrigated, and for corn that is irrigated, water use has been cut in half

Through the ingenuity and forward thinking of America’s farmers, we’ve increased production, decreased the amount of land it takes to grow, and are more efficient with our water resources than ever before. All of this progress has been in the midst of devastating drought that should have resulted in the opposite happening. We have done it before, and we’ll do it again.

But never mind that the study doesn’t account for bettering technology and practices, the study looks forward for 40 years to criticize the RFS, a policy which only has increasing volumetric targets for biofuel for the next nine years. It’s clear that a study working on a timeline that is so far from synching up with the policy it is aimed to criticize cannot be taken seriously.

In sum, farmers are getting more efficient in all aspects of crop production, and you can count on that trend to continue.

Cities compete to win Bloomberg funds for innovative projects

Last summer, New York mayor and soda-hating bazillionaire Michael Bloomberg’s charity launched “The Mayors Challenge” to award $9 million to five cities “that come up with bold ideas for solving major problems and improving city life.” The field has now been whittled down to 20 top concepts.

“From sustainability and public health, to education and economic development, cities are pioneering new policies and programs that are moving the country forward,” said Bloomberg in announcing the contest. “Historically, cities have seen each other as competitors in a zero-sum game, with neighbors pitted against each other in a battle to attract residents and businesses. But more and more, a new generation of mayors is recognizing the value of working together and the necessity of borrowing ideas from one another.”

Bloomberg seems to miss his own point, though, in setting up a battle for funds between cities, some of which have far more resources and innovation street cred than others (I’m looking at you, San Francisco). That’s part of why I want to give a special shout-out to Milwaukee’s entry for the city’s HOME GR/OWN project.

From Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, writing at The Huffington Post:

Imagine vacant lots becoming orchards, gardens, and small farms. Envision foreclosed houses repurposed as small-scale food processing centers and neighborhood nutrition education sites where people connect to prepare and share healthy food. Imagine neighborhoods where foreclosed properties become assets in a campaign to improve healthy food access and demand.

This kind of a project could turn land use on its head for cities struggling with foreclosures and poverty. Municipal governments are often notorious landholders, keeping a grip on more empty properties than even the biggest, baddest developers and banks.

The other 19 Mayors Challenge finalists have some cool ideas too, from a one-bin recycling system in Houston to a “smart energy neighborhood model” in Phoenix.

But I gotta root for the underdog here. Milwaukee’s population has shrunk by about 5 percent over the last 20 years and the city has been plagued by foreclosure, but Mayor Barrett has long pushed for sustainability. Give ‘em the cash, Bloomberg — they can put it to good use.
