Jeremy Piven Wants You To Know That He’s Not an Asshole

Jeremy Piven wants you to know he’s boring. Or, rather, he’s nothing like Ari Gold, the brash, utterly tactless, yet somehow likable Hollywood agent he portrayed over eight seasons of HBO’s Entourage—racking up three Emmys and a Golden Globe for best supporting actor.

Piven grew up a long way from Tinseltown. His parents were founding members of Chicago’s Playwrights Theatre Club—which spawned famed improv troupe the Second City—and the Piven Theatre Workshop, whose well-known alumni include the Cusack siblings, Aidan Quinn, Lili Taylor, and Piven himself. After earning a theater degree at Iowa’s Drake University, Piven, now 49, landed a series of small comedic parts in film and television, including serial gigs on Ellen and The Larry Sanders Show. But it was Entourage, inspired by the Hollywood escapades of executive producer Mark Wahlberg, that made him famous.

He reprises the Ari role in the Entourage movie, which hits theaters on June 5. But his main post-Entourage gig has been the Masterpiece drama Mr. Selfridge, whose third season kicks off Sunday on PBS. For his leading role as the department store visionary Harry Selfridge, Piven had to summon his anti-Ari. “Ari Gold was all bark and no bite,” he told me. “Harry Selfridge is all bite and no bark.”

Mother Jones: Do you think the Entourage movie will appeal to people who’ve never watched the show?

Film Review: Salt of the Earth

Mother Jones

Salt of the Earth, a new Sony Pictures Classics doc narrated and codirected by Wim Wenders, is a somber retrospective of the prodigious photographer Sebastião Salgado rendered, fittingly, in black and white. The 71-year-old Brazilian gained his acclaim shooting war, manual labor (Workers), and mass displacement (Migrations). On screen, as he hopscotches from one calamity to the next, we can see his faith in humanity eroding. “We humans are terrible animals,” he proclaims at one point, later adding: “It’s an endless story of repression, a tale of madness.” This visually stunning film helps us understand why Salgado, like other photographers who focus on human misery, has sought respite in more heartening projects: His most recent, Genesis, documents Earth’s natural wonders.

If You Watch “The Good Wife,” This Tweet Is Going To Blow Your Mind

Mother Jones

The Good Wife is the best show in the world. It’s on hiatus until March 1 and I was really upset about it but at least this happened tonight:

Thank you, S. Alexander Smith. I want to be your best friend.

Update, 12/23/2014: Sony has confirmed the Christmas Day release of “The Interview.”

It looks like “The Interview” may actually be released on Christmas Day!

Independent theaters in Texas and Atlanta are saying that they’ve received the go-ahead to show the film Thursday.

The Dallas Morning News has more: “Sources familiar with this morning’s conference call say Sony is also going to make the movie available to theaters at a reduced rental rate, as well as put it on a streaming service (not yet named) and video on demand by no later than Christmas.”

This is fantastic news for America and for freedom of expression and blah blah blah blah. However, on the downside, it does mean we may actually have to see this stupid movie now. Still, overall, fantastic news!

God bless America. God bless George Washington. God bless all the Founding Fathers. God bless Thomas Edison for inventing the movie camera. God bless Seth Rogen and James Franco. God bless Kim Jong Un…wait, don’t God bless Kim Jong Un.

Nature is one of the world’s flagship peer-reviewed scientific journals, a venue for some of our best new ideas about the world. Sometimes, those ideas are about animals that also happen to be outrageously, unconscionably cute. I’m talking baby-penguins-and-pomeranians-and-monkeys-cute. This morning the ingenious folks in Nature‘s video department rounded them all up into one face-melting video.

Here’s how to put a YouTube video on endless loop. You’re welcome.

Film Review: “We Are the Giant”

We Are the Giant

MOTTO PICTURES

Bahraini sisters and activists Maryam and Zainab al-Khawaja are the heart of this devastating look at the lives behind three Arab Spring uprisings. The film’s interviews are interspersed with grainy, often violent footage—one heart-wrenching clip of a little girl singing at a peaceful protest is cut short by a nearby explosion; another expresses the profound remorse of a Syrian protest leader whose peaceful rallies were met by fatal attacks on his people. By the end, some of the film’s main characters are questioning their faith in nonviolent resistance, but their resilience in the face of injustice is this excellent film’s common thread.

Jon Stewart Explains What Is "So Utterly Depressing" About the Eric Garner Grand Jury

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Last night, Jon Stewart began the Daily Show by dropping the comedy and expressing in very human terms the frustration and disbelief everyone (or (well, not everyone) is feeling after a Staten Island grand jury’s failure to indict the NYPD officer who put Eric Garner in a lethal chokehold on film.”If comedy is tragedy plus time I need more fucking time—but I would settle for less fucking tragedy, to be honest with you. What is so utterly depressing is that none of the ambiguities that existed in the Ferguson case exist in the Staten Island case. And yet the outcome is exactly the same.” Stewart says. “We are definitely not living in a post-racial society and I can imagine there are a lot of people out there wondering how much of a society we’re living in at all.” Pretty much.

I have been to the Oscars, to Cannes, to Sundance, and speaking for myself only, at this particular juncture in time—I retain the right to change my mind in the future; maybe I’m going through some stuff right now; maybe I’ll regret this—these Super Bad Mario videos are the most entertaining things I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

The bit with the television presenter on the boat in this one is art.

Have a nice weekend.
