Thank you, America.

When we asked America to tell President Obama and the EPA to stand up to the oil industry and support renewable fuel, we expected a big response.

But the outpouring of support has been even bigger than we expected. More than 200,000 people from all 50 states signed our Fuels America petition, sending a clear message to the EPA: Renewable fuel is working for rural America.

On the final day of the comment period, leaders from the National Farmers Union and I Am Biotech hand-delivered more than 200,000 comments on behalf of Fuels America to the EPA. The boxes of printed signatures stood over 5 feet high.

Big Oil has high-paid Washington lobbyists on their side, but we have the numbers. Our strong showing of support from hardworking Americans can mean a brighter future for renewable fuel and the more than 800,000 American jobs supported by the RFS.

Thank you.

Recap: Fuels America Responds to Toomey/Feinstein Bill

Posted 27 February 2015 in

National

Yesterday, members of the Fuels America coalition held a conference call to address a new bill from Senators Feinstein and Toomey that would devastate the renewable fuel industry and the rural communities that rely on it. That legislation, the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act, would change the way the EPA administers the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The bill would also harm progress on second-generation biofuels, including cellulosic ethanol — the cleanest motor fuel in the world.

During the call, Fuels America also released a letter calling on President Obama to ensure that the EPA’s new multiyear rule for the RFS supports growth for existing and new biofuels technologies and lives up to the original intent of the bipartisan law.

Listen to the conference call.

Debunking the Food vs Fuel Myth

Posted 20 February 2015 in

In a recent article for Biofuels Digest, Brent Erickson of the Biotechnology Industry Organization debunks the “food vs fuel” myth presented in a new working paper issued by the World Resources Institute (WRI).

Through increased crop productivity and human ingenuity, America’s farmers are sustainably meeting the demands of food crops and bioenergy crops. For America’s rural economies, the renewable fuel industry is a vital source of jobs. This will continue to be the case for years to come as long as Big Oil and their allies aren’t successful in spreading misinformation about this homegrown fuel choice.

“It makes one wonder what the real agenda behind Searchinger’s tortured assumptions is. It seems to be to try and kill off renewable biofuels and facilitate fossil carbon pollution. It’s long past time that the world recognizes the fatal flaws in Searchinger’s arguments and stores this argument in the compost pile, where it belongs.”

Next Generation Fuel on the Rise

Big things are happening in Iowa. For the second week in a row, a new cellulosic ethanol facility is coming online — one of four new cellulosic ethanol facilities opening in the U.S. before the end of the year.

Located in Galva, Iowa, Quad County Corn Processors’ Adding Cellulosic Ethanol (ACE) project is turning corn kernel fiber into low-emission renewable fuel. This first-of-its-kind facility is the result of a $9 million investment and is expected to produce 3.75 million gallons per year of cellulosic ethanol from a feedstock already onsite.

Cellulosic ethanol is a low-emission, sustainable biofuel produced from agricultural waste. Blending that ethanol into our fuel will help to reduce our dependence on foreign oil — and make our air cleaner.

Learn about the ACE project and the other new cellulosic ethanol plants in our infographic above.

American Drivers Can Save $0.61 Per Gallon by Choosing Renewable Fuels

American Drivers Can Save $0.61 Per Gallon by Choosing Renewable Fuels

Posted 18 June 2014 in

As the situation in Iraq comes home to motorists paying higher prices at the pump, more and more Americans are choosing less expensive, homegrown fuels as opposed to reliance on the volatile market for foreign oil. In fact, an analysis of data covering the past year from E85prices.com shows that drivers with “Flex Fuel” vehicles in the U.S. can pay an average of $0.61 less per gallon by filling up with E85, which contains up to 85 percent American ethanol.

As you probably know, ethanol is a higher octane fuel that improves engine performance. That’s why it has been added to gasoline for decades and is now being blended at higher levels into the fuels used throughout professional auto racing. Prices for American-grown renewable fuels like ethanol and advanced biofuels have just gotten better and better thanks to America’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which ensures that homegrown renewable fuels are available as an option to American consumers.

The analysis of data from “E85 Prices” also showed how drivers nationwide have at times saved as much as a whopping $0.76 per gallon at the pump over the past year by filling up on E85. And because ethanol increases the available fuel supply, it helps to drive down the price of gasoline for all drivers regardless of whether they choose a higher blend fuel like E15 or E85. And you’ve probably already heard that in addition to saving American drivers money, the RFS has helped to support 852,000 jobs and $184.5 billion in economic output in the U.S.

Meanwhile, violence in Iraq is driving high gas prices even higher than predicted. Mere worries about oil supply issues have already helped drive world and U.S. prices to their highest levels since September. Americans could see prices for regular gasoline jump more than $0.20 per gallon over the next couple weeks as violence in Iraq continues.

Our analysis coincides with a Fuels America advertising campaign to highlight the consumer savings the RFS and the renewable fuels industry deliver for Americans. This week, the coalition is running digital ads that ask Americans why we should “let Big Oil pump us dry,” and call on our leaders to “invest in affordable, homegrown renewable fuels” by protecting America’s Renewable Fuel Standard.

Our Response to the Feinstein-Coburn Bill to Eliminate Corn Ethanol Mandate within the RFS

Our Response to the Feinstein-Coburn Bill to Eliminate Corn Ethanol Mandate within the RFS

Posted 13 December 2013 in

National

The bill from Senators Feinstein, Coburn, and their co-sponsors is short-sighted and demonstrates a failure to understand how the renewable fuel industry works.

First and second generation renewable fuel are linked and in weakening the corn ethanol industry, this bill will kill the promise of cellulosic fuels – the very sector the Senators claim to support.

First-generation producers are investing in the next generation of clean fuels. Damaging those companies would result in a huge reduction in investments aimed at cellulosic commercialization.

It would also signal to investors that the RFS did not create the stable marketplace that it was intended to, and that Congress could change any part of the law based on the political mood of the day. Together, these consequences would fatally damage the future of advanced fuels in America.

Economists agree that oil is the main driver of high food prices, not corn. And the widespread belief that 44 percent of the corn crop goes toward ethanol is untrue. Roughly a third of that corn is made into high-protein animal feed. This bill is based on rumors perpetuated by the oil industry, not facts.

This measure would strand billions of dollars already invested in advanced fuels; undermine research and development; and threaten thousands of potential jobs.

New study finds weak RFS will lead to massive emissions spike

New study finds weak RFS will lead to massive emissions spike

Posted 5 December 2013 in

A new study out of Argonne National Lab contains some new and interesting data about biofuels and the EPA’s 2014 RVO proposal. Argonne’s scientists found that if the EPA moves forward with their proposed biofuel targets, we will produce over 30 billion tons more of CO2 next year than if the EPA sticks with the targets laid out in the RFS.

The EPA’s pending decision to increase emissions by 30 billion tons of CO2 would be equivalent to putting 6.28 million new cars on the road or increasing our oil consumption by 70 million barrels. This is diametrically opposed to what the EPA says its goals are and to what is good for America.

It’s sad to see the EPA and the Obama Administration kowtowing to Big Oil, but it’s not too late. They have not yet finalized the proposal, so there is still time for the EPA to do the right thing for the environment. Add your voice to the fight by sending a letter to the Administration.

The Fuels America coalition responded today to the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal related to the amount of renewable fuel that will be blended in the nation’s fuel supply next year:

We are astounded by the proposal released by the Administration today. It reflects an “all of the above, except biofuels” energy strategy. If implemented, would cost American drivers more than $7 billion in higher gas prices, and hand the oil companies a windfall of $10.3 billion.

The impact of this proposal on the renewable fuel industry– both first and second generation – cannot be overstated. It caps the amount of renewable fuel used in our gasoline far below what the industry is already making, and could make next year, using an approach that is inconsistent with the RFS.

It would siphon investment in cellulosic and advanced renewable fuels off to other countries and put U.S. jobs at risk. And it will idle ethanol plants, adding to the unemployment rolls and devastating rural economies.

This proposal embraces the fictional ‘blend wall’, a narrative created by the oil industry to stifle competition and deny Americans higher blends of renewable fuel. Oil companies have slowed the adoption of higher blends by discouraging and intimidating station owners from upgrading their infrastructure, fear mongering around E15, and filing lawsuits.

First and second-generation renewable fuel producers have invested billions in America and in clean fuel technology that will move us forward. Lowering renewable fuel targets will wipe away years of that progress.

We appreciate the Administration’s sentiment that they are committed to the renewable fuel industry and look forward to working with them to ensure the final proposal reflects realities within the industry, and a smarter, cleaner energy future for the U.S.

Cellulosic ethanol comes of age in 2014

From Iowa Farmer Today:

It’s looking like 2014 could be a big year for the fledgling cellulosic ethanol industry.

Three full-fledged cellulosic ethanol-production facilities are slated to open, and at a fourth site a corn ethanol plant is adding a bolt-on bit of cellulosic technology.

Construction crews are busy today at the site of the new DuPont cellulosic ethanol plant here. A few hours away in Emmetsburg, crews are also at work putting up another cellulosic ethanol production facility at the POET plant.

In the small community of Galva, the planners are taking a different approach to cellulosic ethanol as they make changes at the corn ethanol plant.

In Hugoton, Kan., construction is under way at an Abengoa bioenergy plant.

The Abengoa project is expected to use wheat straw as a primary feedstock while the Galva project, at Quad County Corn Processors, will use new technology developed at that location to use corn kernel fiber in the existing ethanol process.

But, the other two projects will use corn stover as the primary feedstock.

“Corn stover is a whole new commodity. Historically, we don’t use it,” says Jeff Taylor, a farmer from Gilbert and chairman of Lincolnway Energy in Nevada, which is next door to the new DuPont facility.
