20 Creative Uses for Liquid Castile Soap

Castile soap is a delightful, multi-use product whosehistory stretches back thousands of years to the Castile region of Spain (hence the name).

The story goes that, after millennia of use in Syria, Crusaders encountered caravans of the stuff being transported along the Silk Road. The Crusadersthen promptly took some back with them to Europe, where they recreated the formula for manufacturing at home.

There’s a reason we are still using Castile soap today: the soapmade from pure, high quality oils like olive oil andlaurel oilis as effective as it is gentle, and its uses are abundant.

Plus, Castile soap is vegan! Most traditional soaps are made from animal oils and fats; this one is veggie oil only. If you haven’t tried Castile soap yet, you really must!

Ready to dive in? Let me show you what liquid Castile soap can do.

20 Creative Uses for Liquid Castile Soap

Beauty & Hygiene

1) Wash your face.

Use a couple of drops of Castile soap as a face wash! The product will not strip your face of its natural oils, but will remove any dirt and grime sitting there. Add essential oils if you’d like to customize.

2) Use as shaving cream.

Lather a few drops of Castile soap on your legs then shave as you normally do. No nasty chemicals here; just pure, vegetable goodness.

3) Wash your young children’s hair.

When kids are young, their bodies don’t produce enough oil to really need conventional shampoo. Just lather a drop or two of unscented, Castile soap with water to remove daily grime and rinse as usual. Transition to shampoo as they get older.

4)Make a soothing foot scrub.

Mix together 1 Tablespoon liquid Castile soap (peppermint or unscented) with 2 Tablespoons coconut oil, 3-5 drops Tablespoon peppermint extract, and 1 cup of white sugar. Combine well, then transfer to an airtight container. Scrub feet, rinse and pat dry, then pop on some socks to keep the moisture in!

5)Cleanse as a body wash.

Mix 4 Tablespoons of liquid Castile soap with 4 Tablespoons of Raw honey. Add 2 Tablespoons of another oil (I recommend olive oil), and 10-15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Carefully mix together without creating bubbles, then add into your body wash container.

In the Kitchen

6) Rinse the skins of fruits and veggies.

Swish around a few drops of liquid Castile soap into a bowl full of lukewarm water. Let the produce soak in the mixture for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse them off.

7) Cleanse the countertops.

Homemade all-purpose cleaners are a breeze to make when you have Castile soap on hand. Just fill your spray bottle a quarter of the way full with white distilled vinegar, add water to the top, then add a squirt of Castile soap. Add essential oils if you like.

8) Mop hard floors.

Add 1 Tablespoon of liquid Castile soap to a gallon of hot water. Mop with this and your floors will come out squeaky clean and shiny! Add a few drops of orange essential oil for added shine.

9) Scrub the sink.

Sinks, tubs, faucets, you name it! This little mixture is all you need.

Mix 1 1/2 cups of baking soda with 1/2 cup liquid Castile soap, then add a few drops of essential oil (I recommend grapefruit seed extract or tea tree oil) for a paste that behaves like your traditional Soft Scrub. Just add a little dollop to a clean, damp rag, and clean away.

10)Make homemade dishwasher soap.

Around the House

11) Wash your dog’sfur.

Get your dog wet, then massagea couple of squirts of peppermint Castile soap into the fur until it is lathered. Rinse with warm water and be careful not to get it in their eyes and ears!

12) Scrub the toilet.

For a quick toilet bowl touch-up, just toss in a few drops and scrub as you normally would.

13) Make foaming hand soap.

Have an empty foaming hand soap dispenser? Just fill it with three parts boiled water and one part liquid Castile soap. Shake gently. Add essential oils if you like!

14) Wash the dishes.

While it will not lather like normal dish soap, the product works just as well and will get your dishes clean.

15) Hand wash your laundry.

If you have delicates that require specialcare or handwashing, try using a few drops of Castile. This is also a great solution if you’re traveling at a hostel, bed and breakfast, or guest house that does not have laundering services. Wash in the sink or shower, then hang to dry near a heater or fan.

Other Ideas

16)Kill pesky ants.

Mix together a spray of Castile soap, water and vinegar, then spray at anypoints where ants are entering your home.

17) Shine the windows.

Mix one cup of white distilled vinegar with four teaspoons of Castile soap, and four cups of distilled warm water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, gently shake, then spray on your windows for a streak-free clean.

18) Make reusable cleaning cloths.

Have an old t-shirt that is well past wearable? Cut them up into rag-size cloths, then add to a jar filled with a liquid solution of 1 cup warm water, 1 ounce (or 1/8 cup) of liquid castile soap, and 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Nice and easy!

19) Get carpet stains out of your rugs.

Mix one TablespoonCastile soap with 2-3 Tablespoonshydrogen peroxide. Pour or spray onto your carpet stain, scrub like you mean it, then soak up the wetness with a clean dry rag, or carpet cleaner.

20) Shine old pans.

Add a few drops to an old, oven stained pan, then scrub away! The residue will come off in a jiffy. Still struggling? Add a little bit of baking soda.

How to Make Sure What You’re Buying is Cruelty-Free

Its unfortunate that cosmetic animal testing is still legal in the United States. Some countries banned the practice long ago (in fact, in 2013, the entire European Union made it illegal to sell any products whose manufacture had included cosmetic animal testing), but the U.S. is still trailing behind.

If you are passionate about reducing and preventing animal cruelty, chances are you do your best to avoid purchasing products from companies that perform animal testing. Theres more to shopping cruelty-free than simply relying on a label, though. Heres what you need to know in order to shop cruelty-free:

Look for the Leaping Bunny

The most reliable and well-known way to find cruelty-free products is to select items that feature the characteristic Leaping Bunny symbol (bonus tip: You can download the Leaping Bunny app, which allows you to quickly check whether or not a product is cruelty-free). Created and bestowed by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, this symbol shows that the product is distributed by a company you can feel good about supporting.

In order to earn the certification, companies must pledge not only to preclude animal testing internally, but also to only purchase their ingredients from other cruelty-free companies. They must promise not to sell to countries that make animal testing compulsory (Ill get to that in a minute), and must do thorough screenings and upkeep to ensure that none of their partners have begun animal testing practices. They must also commit to renewing their certification every year.

Shopping for products that have this certification is a really good way to avoid accidentally supporting companies that test on animals, becauseas I’m about to explainthings can get complicated.

Do Your Research on Parent Companies and Affiliates

Many, many companies that arent cruelty-free own all-natural product lines that claim to be. For example, while the popular toothpaste and personal care line Toms of Maine might not test on animals, it’s owned by Colgate-Palmolive, which is decidedly not cruelty-free. The same can be said of Clinique, which is owned by EsteLauder.

Some people believe that purchasing a cruelty-free brand from a large conglomerate can help shift the parent company toward better values, while others decide not to support the company or its affiliates at all. That decision is yours to make.

Get to Know Countries’Individual Animal Testing Requirements

The Chinese government requires that many cosmetic products be tested on animals before they can be sold to the general public. This means that if a cosmetic product is available in China, it’s most likely being tested on animals.

By contrast, no cosmetic products sold in the European Union can ever have been tested on animals. Buying a European-made product is a great way to know that your cosmetics are cruelty-free.

It takes a lot of time to sift through the information out there about animal testing. There are definitely signs that things are getting betterthe EU law and recent changes to Chinese laws are big victories for animal rights activists. But were not done yet! Make your voice heard by supporting companies that consider animals well-being. Be choosy about your cosmetic purchases, ask your favorite companies to take the cruelty-free pledge, and do your research about animal testing laws and issues.

5 Ingredients to Avoid in Your Hair Products

Many Americans are working to reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals and toxic ingredients. Few industries have faced more criticism for their ingredients than the cosmetics industry, and lately, it seems that more and more brands arereleasing organic or all-natural personal care lines.

Shampoos and conditioners, in particular, contain a lot of toxic ingredients. Some health-conscious consumers have taken to making their own haircare products, but others still prefer to use ready-made, expert-developed shampoos and conditioners. If this is you, rest assured that you have plenty of options. You dont necessarily have to spend a fortune, either! A quick glance at a products ingredient list can tell you a lot about its safety. Here are five toxic ingredients youll want to be sure to avoid when picking out a shampoo or conditioner:

Sulfates

Youve probably heard of sulfates by now; pretty much every natural hair care brand states proudly on itspackaging thataproduct is sulfate-free. But what are sulfates, and why should you avoid them?

The main thing to keep in mind when thinking about sulfates is that they are chemical detergents. That in itself isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it means that sulfates are extremely effective at removing dirt and oil … in fact, theyre a little too effective. Sulfates are harsh on the hair and scalp, so they can strip away that natural moisture that keeps your hair shiny and soft.

On a deeper level, they may carry some hormone-disrupting agents along with them. According to Natural Society, many sulfates contain traces of dioxane, a known carcinogen. Dioxane is also thought to disrupt kidney function.

Parabens

Parabens are another widely hated group of chemicals that youve probably been told to avoid in your beauty and personal care products. Parabens are xenoestrogens, which means that they have a similar composition to hormones found in the human body. Xenoestrogens are thought to disrupt hormones and could even post a cancer risk.

Real Simple even noted that British scientistsfound evidence of parabens in samples of breast cancer tissue. Though this doesnt necessarily mean the parabens caused the cancer, most natural-minded folks try to avoid parabens completely.

Fragrance

Fragrances are bad, bad, bad. If the fragrance in your product comes from a natural essential oil, it will say so on the packaging. If all the manufacturers have chosen to tell you about the ingredient is that its a fragrance, thats generally bad news.

The term fragrance allows manufacturers to opt out of including a list of the ingredients used to create that fragrance, as the term is not regulated by the FDA. So really, if fragrance is listed on an ingredient list, theres no telling whats in there. Natural Society even notes that there are more than 3,100 chemicals used by the fragrance industry to concoct these suspicious-sounding additions to your shampoos and conditioners.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent thats often added to personal care products as a preservative. Dr. Ben Kim notes that we still dont have enough conclusive evidence to say for sure whether or not triclosan is safe for use, but there have certainly been some warning signs to the contrary.

Triclosan is thought to be an endocrine disruptor, which means it can be harmful in the same fashion as xenoestrogens. Its also been linked to immune system problems, weight loss and uncontrolled cellular reproduction, according to Dr. Kim.

Polyethylene Glycol

Polyethylene glycol, or PEG, is also thought to interfere with the body. According to Natural Society, the state of California has classified the chemical as a developmental toxicant, which means that it may interfere with human development. Its also known to be contaminated by the aforementioned cancer-causer dioxane.

If youre looking for shampoos and conditioners that are made with safe, reliable, natural ingredients, you have lots of options at your fingertips. And if youre feeling more adventurous, of course, you could always try making your own homemade hair care products!
