Trump Attacks Michelle Obama

Mother Jones

I have no idea what this is about, but….

A few days ago I mentioned that there were a few people who had attacked Trump and avoided return fire: Michelle Obama, Mark Cuban, and Warren Buffett. I guess now we’re down to just the last two.

Bill O’Reilly Had the Worst Response to Michelle Obama’s Convention Speech

Mother Jones

On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama delivered a stirring speech that was widely praised on both sides of the aisle. Even Donald Trump commended the first lady’s performance, despite being the unnamed target of her forceful rebuke.

But there was one line in her remarks that Fox News historian Bill O’Reilly felt needed more explanation. The line below:

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” Obama said. “And I watch my daughters—two beautiful, intelligent, black young women—playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. Because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all of our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.”

On his show Tuesday, O’Reilly lauded Obama for “referring to the evolution of America in a positive way.” But he then proceeded to fact-check her statement in a way that appeared to excuse the US government’s use of slave labor.

“Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802,” he said. “However, the feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor. So Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working as well. Got it?”

And there you have it—the worst response to Michelle Obama’s 2016 Democratic National Convention address.

Melania Trump Stole Part of Her Convention Speech From Michelle Obama

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but in the era of Google you should at least be a little more careful about doing it on live national TV:

Michelle Obama, 2008
Melania Trump, 2016

Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation.

From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life: that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son, and we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow.

This comes via Jarrett Hill. I’m sure Donald will have a suitably belligerent explanation about this tomorrow. Or maybe via Twitter later tonight. I’m hoping for a declaration that Michelle actually stole it from Melania.

BY THE WAY: It’s interesting that one of the phrases Melania left out was about treating people with dignity and respect “even if you don’t know them.” How very Trumpish.

More Racist Things Ferguson Officials Did

Mother Jones

Today the Justice Department released its scathing 105-page report on Ferguson’s pervasive discrimination against black residents. The report included references to blatantly racist emails from local officials: One said Obama wouldn’t last in office because he’s black; another attached a photo of bare-chested group of women, apparently in Africa, captioned “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion.” The DOJ found plenty of other evidence of racial bias; below are a few examples. (We’re making our way through the report and will add to the list.)

One black Ferguson resident told Justice Department officials about his interaction with a Ferguson police officer, in which the officer told him “N*****, I can find something to lock you up on”:

Ferguson city officials and police interviewed by the DOJ “nearly uniformly” said that it was due to a lack of “personal responsibility,” not the failure of the law, that African-American members of the Ferguson community were disproportionately targeted by law enforcement:

The DOJ found that Ferguson officials commonly dismissed tickets for friends, showing a “double standard grounded in racial stereotyping”:

Ferguson police routinely used Tasers “where less force—or no force at all—would do.” Almost 90 percent of the time cops used force, it was against African Americans, and often they used unnecessary force against people with mental health disabilities:

All of the police canine attacks reviewed by the DOJ targeted black residents, including a 14-year-old boy who was hiding in a storage closet. The dog bit his arm, causing puncture wounds:

The DOJ called out the following emails sent by Ferguson officials as “illustrative” of racial bias:

If You Watch “The Good Wife,” This Tweet Is Going To Blow Your Mind

Mother Jones

The Good Wife is the best show in the world. It’s on hiatus until March 1 and I was really upset about it but at least this happened tonight:

Thank you, S. Alexander Smith. I want to be your best friend.

Michelle Obama Appears on "Parks and Recreation" To Push Her Left-Wing, Pro-Exercise Propaganda

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

On Thursday, First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on the season finale of NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation to meet Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler). Obama encourages Knope to take a new job at the National Park Service. Knope—a die-hard liberal—proceeds to freak the hell out over meeting one of her heroes. (She acted similarly when she met Vice President Joe Biden.)

The first lady also chats with Knope about how her “Let’s Move!” program has been integrated into national parks: “Getting kids outside, rock climbing, hiking,” says Obama, who previously got some help from Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon in promoting “Let’s Move!” and the importance of exercise. The program was developed to address the issue of childhood obesity, and has endured plenty of mockery and attacks by conservatives who see it as an affront to individual liberty, or whatever.

The Parks and Rec scene is pretty funny (click here to watch the whole episode). Here’s an abridged version of the first lady’s cameo, via Politico (you can watch the full clip here):

Other politicians Parks and Rec has previously booked for cameos include Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Newt Gingrich.
