Everyone hates the IRS. And as Tax Day nears, complaints about the much-despised agency grow louder and angrier. On the latest “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver dedicated his show to defending the IRS and its employees, who are subjected to working a thankless, challenging job everyday.

“Blaming the IRS because you hate paying your taxes is a bit like slapping your checkout clerk because the price of eggs has gone up,” Oliver said. “It’s not her fault, she’s just trying to help you get out of the store.”

Recent budgets cuts, coupled with constant changes to complicated tax laws only make the situation worse.

Of course, asking viewers to sympathize with the IRS is a difficult task. To help, Oliver recruited singer Michael Bolton to serenade a wonderful ode to the agency, “the anus of our country.” Because as the lyrics note, you’ll never “miss your anus till it’s gone.” Watch below:

Watch John Oliver Explain Why the NCAA Should Stop Exploiting Student Athletes and Pay Up

The National Collegiate Athletic Association reaps in nearly $1 billion a year in revenue, thanks to an annual onslaught of glitzy advertising campaigns and television deals. Coaches and top executives are paid in the millions, but student athletes return to their dorm rooms with nothing but an education for compensation, “the only currency more difficult to spent than Bitcoin,” John Oliver noted last night.

With the start of March Madness on Tuesday, “Last Week Tonight” takes on this very issue, slamming the “illegal sweatshop” nature of the NCAA’s non-pay scale. “There is nothing inherently wrong with a sporting tournament making huge amounts of money,” Oliver said. “But there is something slightly troubling about a billion-dollar sports enterprise where the athletes are not paid a penny, because they aren’t.”

Watch John Oliver Turn America’s Doomed Infrastructure Into a Summer Blockbuster

Mother Jones

America’s infrastructure system—from its dams, bridges, roads, airports, etc.—is deteriorating and in need of a serious renovation. It’s an issue most people agree on, and as John Oliver noted last night, even has the attention of a “total idiot” like Donald Trump. Despite all this, the country remains pretty uninterested in doing anything about it.

“The lack of political urgency in tackling this problem is insane,” Oliver explained. “And you cannot tell me that you are not interested in this, because every summer, people flock to see our infrastructure threatened by terrorists and aliens.”

In hopes to cure America’s blissful apathy to our crumbling infrastructure, Last Week Tonight took a cue from our movie-going habits by producing a gripping, Armageddon-like summer blockbuster to get people freaked out enough and finally start working on this major problem. Watch below:

Watch John Oliver Tackle One Of the Biggest—And Least Talked About—Problems in US Politics

Mother Jones

On Sunday, HBO’s John Oliver took aim at one of American politics’ biggest—and least talked about—problems: judicial elections. As the Last Week Tonight host points out, putting judges in the position of soliciting campaign donations—often from people who may appear in their courtrooms—greatly reduces the appearance of impartiality (at best), and stacks the deck in favor of those with more money (at worst).

Mother Jones examined this issue in depth last fall, discovering that judges themselves aren’t all that thrilled that spending on judicial elections has more than doubled over the last two decades, with much of that growth in form of often unaccountable outside spending.

This Is Why You Should Never Take Moral Lessons From Films You Stopped Watching Halfway Through

Jordan Belfort (aka the Wolf of Wall Street) went to the 92nd St. Y to talk about how great and innocent and redeemed he is. The whole night was a predictable shit show with casual sexism and the like, but this bit struck me as particularly funny:

Belfort said people should realize that the actions portrayed in the film were bad and not something they should follow. “If you’re in this audience and you can’t go to see The Wolf of Wall Street and realize that that’s bad, then there’s something wrong with you. You are fundamentally screwed up. It’s obvious,” Belfort said. Belfort said that he idolized Gordon Gekko’s character in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. He said that had perhaps Gekko fallen, then he would have felt differently. “At least in The Wolf of Wall Street, I lose everything. My life is destroyed. I go to jail,” Belfort said.

In the end of Wall Street, Charlie Sheen wears a wire and narcs Gekko to the feds. Gekko is sentenced to more than a decade in prison and, upon his eventual release, a year of hard Shia.

Watch: John Oliver Destroys Washington’s Racist Football Team Name With New Video

Mother Jones

Last week, a Native American tribe in Northern California ran a new TV ad during the NBA Finals that targeted the racist name of the Washington football team. “Unyielding. Strong. Indomitable,” a narrator intones at the end. “Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t?” The ad then cuts to a picture of a helmet with the team’s logo.

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver used President Obama’s first visit to American Indian land to segue into the battle over the R-word. “For the average American,” he joked, “that ad should tug at 1/16th of your heartstrings and make the rest extremely guilty.” But then Oliver & Co. went a step further: They made their own anti-Redskins video.
