Let’s give Hopper the spotlight again. She deserves two weeks in a row, doesn’t she? Here she is in one of her favorite places: plonked down against my arm when I’m lying on the couch. I do this frequently, using my tablet to peruse the web for news in order to minimize my time at the desk. The less time at the desk, the better my arm and wrist feel.

Needless to say, perusing the web on my tablet is a lot easier when there’s not a cat plonked on my stomach, but them’s the breaks. She usually doesn’t stay very long. Unfortunately, when she leaves, Hilbert often takes her place. Blogging is a tough life.

There’s Little Support for ISIS in the Arab World

Mother Jones

A trio of researchers set out to measure the support for ISIS in five Arab states:

The findings were stark: not many Arabs sympathize with the Islamic State. The percent agreeing with the Islamic State’s goals range from 0.4 percent in Jordan to 6.4 percent in the Palestinian territories. The percent agreeing with the Islamic State’s use of violence range from 0.4 percent in Morocco to 5.4 percent in the Palestinian territories. The percent agreeing that the Islamic State’s tactics are compatible with Islam range from 1.0 percent in Jordan to 8.9 percent n the Palestinian territories.

That’s surprisingly—and gratifyingly—low. Good news.

That Deal Tom Barrack Talked About? Trump Took a Bath On It.

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Tom Barrack is now telling us about the time he sold Trump the Plaza Hotel. “He played me like a Steinway piano,” Barrack said. Trump was a steely-eyed negotiator, a tiger in the jungle.

Who is he kidding? The Plaza Hotel was a disastrous deal. Trump went with his gut and overpaid enormously. He bought it for $407 million—far more than it was worth at the time—spent over $50 million in renovations, and then, when he was going through bankruptcy proceedings, was forced to sell it in a deal that valued the hotel at $325 million. Barrack and his boss took Trump to the cleaners.

What’s more, Barrack was highlighting the absolute worst part of this deal: that Trump was so eager to get the hotel that he agreed to forego normal due diligence and instead allowed Barrack to just give him a list of stuff that needed fixing. It was massive negligence on Trump’s part. If Harvard has a list of the worst, laziest deals ever made, this one would make the top ten list.

Yet this is the example they’re touting to show what a great businessman Trump is? That takes real balls. It’s a testament to the fact that the Trump campaign figures it can just say anything. The Trump hagiography is once again beamed out to millions of people and nobody will ever hold them to account.

Is Brexit Delayed Brexit Denied?

Mother Jones

Hmmm….

Theresa May has indicated that Brexit could be delayed as she said she will not trigger the formal process for leaving the EU until there is an agreed “UK approach” backed by Scotland.

The Prime Minister on Friday travelled to Scotland to meet Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister, and discuss plans for Britain’s Brexit negotiation….Ms Sturgeon has promised to explore every option to keep Scotland in the EU, and has repeatedly warned that if that is not possible as part of the UK, it is “highly likely” to lead to a second independence vote.

This sounds an awful lot like a way to ensure that Brexit never happens. Or am I missing something?

I really don’t think I can face another few hours of reading the news, so I’m calling it a day. There’s plenty of good coverage of the day’s events over at the mothership and at every other news organization on the planet. I’ll be back on Monday, and in the meantime stay calm, stop obsessing over finding someone to blame, and do something nice for someone.

Also: Hilbert is not happy with us humans. He wants us to get our act together.

Whenever we leave the house via the front door—usually to take a walk—the cats wait patiently for us. I don’t know how long they’d wait for us before falling asleep, but longer than 20 minutes, anyway. This is what we always come back to: a pair of cats keeping watch out the window, waiting for our return. The only variation comes from Hilbert, who sometimes waits next to the front-door window, hoping he can make an escape when we open the door. He never seems to realize that staring out the window gives the game away.

Weekly Flint Water Report: June 17-23

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Here is this week’s Flint water report. As usual, I’ve eliminated outlier readings above 2,000 parts per billion, since there are very few of them and they can affect the averages in misleading ways. During the week, DEQ took 258 samples. The average for the past week was 12.13.

The Supreme Court dealt a major blow to President Barack Obama’s effort to shield undocumented immigrants from deportation, upholding a lower court’s rejection of that program by deadlocking in a 4-4 split on Thursday. Read the full decision here:

A Modest Suggestion for Pruning the English Language

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I recommend that the following two words be officially removed from the English language:

Neoliberal
Fascist

The purpose of words is to facilitate the communication of thoughts between human beings. I have conducted exhaustive research1 on Twitter and other popular social networks which conclusively proves that these two collections of phonemes now do the opposite of that. They are therefore not words. Let’s stop using them.

1Forthcoming in the Journal of Demotic Memes and Dialectics.

Guardian: American Cities "Cheat" on Lead Testing of Tap Water

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Guardian claims that “at least 33” large American cities use testing methods deliberately designed to undercount the presence of lead in tap water:

Of these cities, 21 used the same water testing methods that prompted criminal charges against three government employees in Flint over their role in one of the worst public health disasters in US history.

….Testing methods that can avoid detecting lead include asking testers to run faucets before the test period, known as “pre-flushing”; to remove faucet filters called “aerators”; and to slowly fill sample bottles. The EPA reiterated in February that these lead-reducing methods go against its guidelines, and the Flint charges show they may now be criminal acts.

….The EPA has warned since 2008 that pre-flushing is problematic and goes against the “intent” of regulations designed to detect lead….Further distortion is achieved through the removal of “aerators” — the small metal filters at the tip of faucets. These filters can collect lead particles and add to lead detected in tests.

I don’t know how serious this is. I suppose no one will know until these cities collect data properly and compare it to their old results. The EPA says it plans to release new testing rules in 2017.
