Hopper is not asleep in this photo. She was smooching her cheek on an outdoor table and momentarily closed her eyes in a fit of pure feline bliss. We should all consider ourselves lucky if just once in our lives we feel the happiness Hopper is feeling in this moment.

Just as I thought that Hilbert and Hopper had given up on sleeping with each other, suddenly they’ve decided to occupy the pod together. This mostly happens when Hopper gets in the pod and then Hilbert asserts his ownership rights1 by jumping on top of her. In the past, Hopper would usually just vacate. It wasn’t worth the trouble of staying. But lately she’s been holding her ground. For at least a little while each day, the pod is just an adorable mound o’ cats.

1In fairness, it is his pod, by right of tenancy. Hopper never really liked the pods that much, but Hilbert has been a faithful pod companion on my desk ever since we brought him home.

Hopper loves to putter around on the roof, and the other day she saw me in the bedroom while she was up there. She knows perfectly well how to get down (jump on tree, jump on fence, then jump to ground), but as soon as she saw me she immediately demanded to be let in through the window. This was never going to happen, since I know that if I did it once she would force me into screen-removing slavery for the rest of my life. However, it did provide an opportunity for catblogging fodder. At some point, Hilbert somehow got wind of what was going on, so he came up to see what the fuss was about. Hopper appears to be sharing a secret of some kind with him here, but what? No human will ever know.

It’s Hilbert’s turn this week, so he has the honor of hosting the final catblogging of the year. Here he is camping out on our neighbor’s roof two doors down. He’s about a hundred feet away from me, but in this era of cheap superzoom cameras that posed no problem. If you’re wondering what it is that’s caught his attention, the answer is Hopper. She was on the fence down below, and a few moments later jumped up to explore the roof too. There is no acrophobia among our cats.

As you can see, Hopper is getting ready for Christmas. She has spurned this particular cat bed since the day we bought it, but as soon as we put it under the tree she claimed it as her own.

Does our tree look a little sparse? I assure you we have plenty of ornaments higher up, but we decided to keep the bottom foot of the tree free of distraction. I assume this needs no explanation.

I got lucky this week and managed to snap this gorgeous portrait of Hopper. Today, however, everyone is inside. The wind is blowing pretty hard, and it took the cats less than a minute to decide that the backyard was much too scary for them. Leaves blowing! Branches thwacking on the patio cover! Loud whooshing sounds! Much better to snooze inside next to a window, where cruel nature can be seen but not heard.

Guess who’s getting a Presidential Medal of Freedom? Hopper! Well, Hopper’s namesake anyway, Adm. Grace Hopper:

Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, known as “Amazing Grace” and “the first lady of software,” was at the forefront of computers and programming development from the 1940s through the 1980s. Hopper’s work helped make coding languages more practical and accessible, and she created the first compiler, which translates source code from one language into another.1

It’s a posthumous award, but Adm. Hopper is now right up there with Vin Scully and Newton “Television Is A Vast Wasteland” Minow. Naturally, this means that the furry version of Hopper is the star of this week’s catblogging. She is trying her best to look visionary.

1Meh. I guess that’s close enough. No need to get pedantic here.

Here is Hopper posing for a glamor shot on a gray-and-white blanket that matches her coloring. We call this look “Blue Squeal.” She’s not the most cooperative model in the world.

Hilbert deserves the same treatment, of course, but that will have to wait until I get hold of a Shamu-colored blanket.

Let’s give Hopper the spotlight again. She deserves two weeks in a row, doesn’t she? Here she is in one of her favorite places: plonked down against my arm when I’m lying on the couch. I do this frequently, using my tablet to peruse the web for news in order to minimize my time at the desk. The less time at the desk, the better my arm and wrist feel.

Needless to say, perusing the web on my tablet is a lot easier when there’s not a cat plonked on my stomach, but them’s the breaks. She usually doesn’t stay very long. Unfortunately, when she leaves, Hilbert often takes her place. Blogging is a tough life.

The evil dex will be keeping me up all night tonight, but that’s OK. I actually kind of enjoy it. Unfortunately, every silver lining has a cloud, and in this case the cloud is lots of afternoon crashes over the next few days to make up for the lost sleep.

But then again, every cloud has a silver lining, and in this case the silver lining belongs to Hopper, who gets a great place for her afternoon snooze. Hopper thinks dex is a wonder drug that makes humans more like cats, and who’s to say she’s wrong?
