Here is this week’s Flint water report—late but not forgotten, due to some kind of weird screw-up at the Michigan DEQ site. First they didn’t have the data. Then eventually they did, but the spreadsheet was unreadable. Then they took everything down entirely. Then they finally reposted last week’s data. As usual, I’ve eliminated outlier readings above 2,000 parts per billion, since there are very few of them and they can affect the averages in misleading ways. During the week, DEQ took 392 samples. The average for the past week was 11.10.

Unemployment Claims in 2016 Have Set a New Record Low

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The Department of Labor announced today that the 4-week moving average of initial unemployment claims was 276,000 in May. “This marks 65 consecutive weeks of initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1973.”

Not bad—especially when you consider that the population of the country has increased by 50 percent since then. In fact, we missed a milestone earlier this year: adjusted for population, the number of initial unemployment claims since the beginning of 2016 has been the lowest in half a century. The economy still isn’t quite firing on all cylinders, but this is yet another sign that it’s doing pretty well.

News You Can Use: Gas Gauge Edition

Here’s a picture of the dashboard on my Mazda 3:

Answer: it points to the side of the car with the gas tank. This has become a standard feature of cars in the past few years, but apparently it’s still unknown to about 90 percent of the population. Not to readers of this blog, though. Now you know!

This may not seem very useful since you probably remember which side of the car your gas tank is on. But back in the day I used to drive a lot of rental cars, and this would have been pretty handy. I never paid attention to the gas tank, and you can’t see them from the side mirror, so about half the time I’d guess wrong and drive into gas stations on the wrong side. Mostly, of course, this was when I was headed back to the airport to turn in the car, and therefore in a little bit of a hurry, which made it all the more annoying.

But no more. No matter what car you’re driving now, you can instantly tell which side the gas tank is on. Progress marches on.

I was going to link to Dave Roberts’ post about Donald Trump’s big energy speech yesterday, but then I couldn’t think of anything to say about it. Before I knew it, catblogging time had arrived. So you’re on your own. Click the link and draw your own conclusions.

Or just skip it and instead admire Hilbert and Hopper peering out from under the rocking chair. For the record, they write all their own speeches.

Well, originally it meant Bullshitter-in-Chief. But this is a family site, so—

Actually, no, it’s not a family site. Still, endless repetitions of bullshit can put people off. So a reader suggested Buffoon-in-Chief. I kind of like that.

Or maybe Blowhard-in-Chief.

Or Blusterer-in-Chief?

Bigot-in-Chief?

Braggart-in-Chief?

It’s sort of remarkable how many B words describe Donald Trump pretty well. How did that happen?

HAHAHAHAHAAHA.

He was just brainstorming! There are no bad ideas in a brainstorm!

I can’t stop laughing.

This happened, naturally, on Fox & Friends. I imagine the episode went a bit like this:

The Highest Ranking Republican Just Refused to Endorse Donald Trump–For Now

House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Thursday that he is “not ready” to endorse Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

“I’m just not ready to do that at this point,” Ryan told CNN‘s Jake Tapper.

“I think what a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard bearer that bears our standards,” he added.

In December, Ryan condemned Trump’s inflammatory plan to ban all Muslims from entering the country.

Bernie Sanders’ Path to Victory All Hinges on This One Chart

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

For those of you wondering how well Bernie Sanders did last night, here’s a table that you might want to keep handy. It’s from Nate Silver, and it shows how big a margin Bernie needs in the remaining states to catch up with Hillary and get a majority of pledged delegates. In Wisconsin, for example, he needed to win by 16 points, but he won by only 13 points and picked up 47 delegates instead of the 50 he needed:

Roughly speaking, Bernie broke even yesterday. He’ll need to do this well or better in every future election. In any case, this is a good table to keep at hand for upcoming primaries. It gives you an idea of how big a victory Bernie needs in order to catch up with Hillary. Anything less is basically a setback; anything more is a victory.

NOTE: I excerpted the table to include only the states with more than 50 delegates. The full table is at the link.
