How Long Is a Long Time, Anyway?

From the “With Friends Like These” file:

President Trump at 5:57 am today: “The Roger Stone report on @CNN is false – Fake News. Have not spoken to Roger in a long time.”

Roger Stone, an hour or so later: “Well, I am not going to contradict the president and I am not going to say when I’ve spoken to him but I will say this, I have spoken to him very recently.”

This is nothing to get hung up on. Trump and Stone probably just have very different ideas of what “long time” and “recently” mean. To a fruit fly researcher, for example, a “long time” might mean three or four days. To an archeologist, “recently” might mean three or four centuries. So this is probably just a humorous misunderstanding.

Donald Trump Roundup For Monday Evening

Donald Trump has been falling in the polls since last Friday. How has he responded to this pressure? Let us count the ways:

Interrupted a rally specifically to gather his gaggle of reporters and complain that a fire marshal had restricted attendance. He implied it was a political decision. This was his second attack on a fire marshal in three days.
Kept up his drumbeat of attacks on Khizr Khan. His right-hand-man, Roger Stone, issued a tweet suggesting that Khan was a “Muslim Brotherhood agent.”
Asked about Khan’s claim that he had never sacrificed anything, said that employing thousands of people was a sacrifice.
Lied about receiving a letter from the NFL asking him to change the dates of the presidential debates so they weren’t opposite football games.
Praised Paul Nehlen, Paul Ryan’s primary challenger.
Suggested that he might take away the New York Times’ press credentials. He has already banned the Washington Post from his events.
Told a crowd of supporters, “I’m afraid the election’s gonna be rigged, I have to be honest.”
Fired the aide who planned the Republican convention.

Have I missed anything? Keep in mind that this is just over the past couple of days. Is it any wonder that Republicans are starting to wonder if Trump is suffering from some kind of genuine mental derangement?

Trump Adviser Claims Father of War Hero Is a "Muslim Brotherhood Agent"

Roger Stone, an informal adviser to Donald Trump, took to Twitter on Sunday to claim that Khizr Khan, the father of a slain war hero who spoke at last week’s Democratic National Convention, is working for the Muslim Brotherhood.

The link that accompanied Stone’s tweet outlines a conspiracy theory that claims Khan is working to bring radical Muslims to the United States. The article Stone linked to also alleges that Khan’s son, Capt. Humayun Khan, was a Muslim martyr who was killed “before his Islamist mission was accomplished.”

Stone’s shocking tweets come just a day after Trump told ABC News that like the Khan family, he has made many sacrifices. The Republican nominee also attacked Khan’s wife, who stood alongside her husband during his DNC address, suggesting that perhaps she “wasn’t allowed” to speak because of the couple’s Muslim faith.

On Sunday, Trump’s vice presidential pick Mike Pence attempted to quell the mounting controversy by claiming Trump believed Khan’s family should be “cherished.” In the same Facebook post, however, Pence said that he supported Trump’s plan to suspend “immigration from countries that have been compromised by terrorism.”

After whipping up a storm of controversy on Sunday, Trump returned to knocking Khan on Monday morning.
