Defying demands from leading Republicans, President Barack Obama pledged Saturday evening to nominate a Supreme Court justice to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Calling Scalia a “larger than life presence on the bench” and “one of the most consequential judges and thinkers to serve on the Supreme Court,” Obama told the nation that “today is a time to remember Justice Scalia’s legacy.”

“I plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time,” added Obama. “There will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote. These are responsibilities that I take seriously, as should everyone. They’re bigger than any one party. They are about our democracy. They’re about the institution to which Justice Scalia dedicated his professional life, and making sure it continues to function as the beacon of justice that our founders envisioned.”

Obama’s comments were a thinly veiled rejection of calls by conservative activists and GOP politicians—including presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnnell (Ky.)—to leave Scalia’s seat vacant until a new president takes office next year.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced on Friday he will not be seeking reelection when his term comes to an end next year. He announced his retirement in a YouTube video:

The decision to retire, the 75-year-old senator from Nevada said, “has absolutely nothing to do” with the injury he sustained back in January from an exercising accident or his new role as minority leader following the Democrats’ loss during the midterm elections. In an interview with the New York Times he explained, “I want to be able to go out at the top of my game. I don’t want to be a 42-year-old trying to become a designated hitter.”

In the video, Reid continues with a message to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, “Don’t be too elated. I’m going to be here for 22 more months, and you know what I’m going to be doing? The same thing I’ve done since I first came to the Senate. We have to make sure the Democrats take control of the Senate again.”

Give ‘em hell, Harry!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has no doubt about what’s causing this summer’s disastrous Western fire season: climate change.

During a meeting with reporters this week, Reid linked global warming to a 28,000-acre blaze in Nevada that caused hundreds to be evacuated from their homes. After being mocked by conservative media, he doubled down and made his points again in front of a group of reporters.

“The West is being devastated by wildfires. Millions of acres are burning. Millions of acres have burned,” Reid said on Thursday. “Why? Because the climate has changed. The winters are shorter; the summers are hotter; the moisture patterns have changed.”

Asked by a reporter what needs to be done, Reid said, “Talk about climate change as if it really exists, not beat around the bush.”

He also called for more federal spending to prevent wildfires.
