My sister is the guest curator for catblogging this week, and this was her selection. I always call this “being a lizard cat,” especially when they strike this pose outside on a nice sunny patio.

This is also the aftermath of being a burrito cat. Hopper likes to burrow into the quilt on the sofa and then stretch out, which makes the whole thing look like a cat burrito. A purring burrito. But then, I’ve always thought that burritos could be improved by a bit of purring. Right?

Looky here: it’s Hilbert plus the entire Drum clan. On the far left, that’s me and my sister circa 1963 (my brother is there too, but Hilbert is hiding him.) Aren’t we cute? In the middle are my parents, and on the right are Marian’s folks. And I’m sure no one needs any help recognizing the youthful, bright-eyed newlyweds in the center.

In other cat news, my sister draws our attention to the fact that cats can save lives too. Here’s the report from Russia: “An abandoned newborn baby was saved from freezing to death by the unlikeliest of hero — a stray cat. The tabby named Marsha climbed into the box the infant had been dumped in and kept the child warm for several hours as the mercury plunged below zero.” Hooray for cats!

After 45 Years, "The Velvet Underground" Stands the Test of Time

The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground—45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition
Polydor/Universal Music Enterprises

Following the radical and overpowering White Light/White Heat, the Velvet Underground’s third, self-titled, album initially seemed like a lesser effort, but it has more than stood the test of time. With cofounder and main creative foil (or foe) John Cale out of the band, leader Lou Reed assumed complete control, crafting a set of relatively understated songs that range from rockin’ (“What Goes On”) to surprisingly gentle (“After Hours”).

At six discs, 65 tracks, and five hours of music, this behemoth collection offers plenty to savor (although casual fans might prefer the two-disc distillation). If three different mixes of the original album suggests overkill, the mono version does reveal different textures to the music, while a fourth disc of sessions for an abandoned fourth album contains a slew of genuine gems, including the raucous “I’m Gonna Move Right In,” a touching “She’s My Best Friend,” and an early look at the Reed standard “Rock & Roll.”

The final two discs, featuring live performances from November 1969, are simply terrific, highlighted by the exuberant “We’re Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together,” a 30-minute-plus take on “Sister Ray” and the anthemic “Sweet Jane.” Nearly a half-century later, the raw heart and tender soul of the Velvet Underground are wondrous indeed.

Remember I told you that 56-year-old human reflexes were no match for 11-month-old kitten reflexes? Well, if you throw in a bad back, it’s game over. Unless these guys are snoozing, I’d guess that only about one picture in ten is even close to catblogging material these days.

Still, one in ten is one in ten, so here are today’s pictures. On the left, Hopper is sitting on the window sill, waiting for a bird to fly by and entertain her. On the right, Hilbert has taken up shop on Marian’s chair in our newly rearranged living room (rearranged to make room for a more back-friendly chair for Kevin). He actually spent most of the night on Wednesday sleeping in our bed with us. Progress!

In other news, my sister recommends that all of you with cats try this. She’s coming over to visit tomorrow morning, so we’ll try it then. Let us know in comments how it goes.
