The Latest One-Upsmanship on the Lunatic Right

It’s hard to keep up with the latest in right-wing looniness. But Andrew Sullivan helps out by highlighting American Betrayal, a loopy new book that updates and then turbocharges the whole Yalta-treason-conspiracy-so-vast fever swamp of the late 40s and 50s:

Take a new book by Diana West about how the Soviet Union “occupied” America under FDR and dictated foreign policy to serve communist interests….And then you begin to inquire further and your eyes widen a little. A few paragraphs into reading the debate, you realize that all of this is connected with the claim of a current huge conspiracy lying in plain sight — the Muslim Brotherhood’s grip on the White House. Obama is a closet Islamist, just as FDR was a closet Stalinist. It all makes sense now!

….So do yourself a favor and get a glimpse of the insanity now dominating what was once a vibrant intellectual culture by reading Ron Radosh’s devastating review of the book. (David Horowitz gives his side of the kerfuffle here.) Front Page offered West equal space to respond but she wisely refused (see her position here). After reading Radosh, you realize why. She’s got nothing. But she still has much of the movement right on her side.

This morning he added an update:

I was dismayed by how isolated the push-back against the book — by David Horowitz and Ron Radosh — seemed to be on the right. So it’s worth revisiting the debate after a few days to check in on developments. First up: some good news today. Conrad Black’s review in NRO surely counts as a serious public counter to the legitimization of this conspiracy theory, lumping West’s far right-paranoia in with Oliver Stone’s far-left version.

Sadly, Conrad Black hardly counts. Sure, he’s a conservative, but he’s also a biographer of FDR who adores his subject. The fact that he’s defending Roosevelt doesn’t actually say much about the right.

On the other hand, Horowitz and Radosh aren’t exactly squishes on this stuff. If even they agree that West’s book is nonsense, then you can be pretty sure that it must be pretty well marinated in the worst kind of Glenn Beck-style nutballism. And yet, great swathes of the right wing have embraced it eagerly. This is part of a peculiar trend on the right over the past few years, in which conservatives are no longer content to argue that liberalism and the New Deal were merely misguided policies. That’s not enough. They’re now returning to Bircher-esque narratives that were abandoned long ago, in which the history of America since the 30s is just one long story of treachery, corruption, economic decline, and deliberate appeasement.

What’s the point of this game of one-upsmanship? I’m not sure. But it’s sort of like the history of Hollywood blockbusters: spectacular battle scenes that seemed awesome just a few years ago are now old hat. New movies have to up the ante, which makes them more and more ridiculous every year. Likewise, conservatives seem to feel that they have to continually up the historical ante. You can barely get any attention these days by writing merely that liberals are trying to turn America into a socialist hellhole. That’s so 2009. Instead you have to argue that FDR was basically a Soviet mole. I’m not sure where it ends.

No Matter How You Slice the Data, Men’s Income Has Been Stagnant Over the Past 4 Decades

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

What’s happened to the earnings of working-age men over the past four decades? A couple of years ago, Michael Greenstone and Adam Looney of the Hamilton Project crunched the numbers and concluded that they had fallen 28 percent between 1969 and 2009.

Scott Winship has long been skeptical of this result, and today he published an essay explaining why. A lot of what he has to say is valuable: we should use the right measure of inflation, for example, and we should count total compensation, not just cash earnings. But regular readers will remember that I’ve never bought fully into Winship’s analysis. The problem is that every analytical choice he makes reduces the size of the apparent problem. Every one. It’s possible that this is just where the data takes him, but it leaves me wondering if he has his thumb on the scale. You’d think that if you took a comprehensive look at the data, you’d find stuff pointing in both directions.

But for now, I’m not here to argue with Winship. I just want to quote his final conclusion:

The adjustments yield the result that men’s compensation rose by 14 percent between 1969 and 2011. From 1969 to 2007, a peak year, the increase was 20 percent.

I think we can assume this is most optimistic possible reading of the data. And yet what does it tell us? During a period when real GDP per capita increased 108 percent, men’s median total compensation has gone up only 20 percent. Even if Winship is right, it means that men’s income has been devastated over the past four decades. Given this, arguments over the technical merits of various measurement methods should be entirely secondary. No matter who’s right, the big questions we should be asking ourselves are how this happened, why it happened, and where all the money went. That’s what matters.

Indonesia to seed clouds, try to put out huge plantation fires

Indonesia to seed clouds, try to put out huge plantation fires

Record-breaking air pollution caused by peatland fires in Sumatra has Malaysians and Singaporeans locked indoors — and Indonesia today plans to try an unconventional approach to tackling the flames.

The Indonesians will dump chemicals from aircraft high above smoldering palm plantations in hopes of changing the weather. The goal is to seed clouds and force them to rain their moisture out over the stubborn conflagrations, which were triggered by slash-and-burn forest-clearing by the palm oil industry.

NASA Goddard

Smoke from fires on Indonesia’s Sumatra island is polluting Singapore and Malaysia.

From the Straits Times:

Two Casa 212 aircraft will be flown to the province’s capital, Pekanbaru, on Friday morning and a C-130 Hercules Air Force aircraft will also be readied for the effort.

Personnel, equipment and seed material to induce rain over clouds have already been sent to Pekanbaru on Thursday night, the agency in charge added.

Cloud seeding is an unusual approach to firefighting. But, then, this is no ordinary fire. From Agence France-Presse:

About 100 firefighters tackling the blazes were finding them difficult to extinguish as they were smouldering underground in carbon-rich peatland, mostly in oil palm plantations, he said.

“It is extremely difficult to extinguish the fires that are burning under the surface of the peatland,” [Indonesian Forestry Ministry official Raffles Panjaitan] said.

He said the success of the cloud-seeding operation would depend on weather conditions.

“Hopefully there will be lots of clouds so that we can produce a lot of rain,” he added.

The worst-hit area was Bengkalis district, where 650 hectares of land was ablaze, he said, adding that 555 fires had been detected in Riau, up from 356 the previous month.

The smoke is fraying tempers in neighboring countries. From the BBC:

Pollution levels reached a new record high for a third day in a row in Singapore, as smoky haze from fires in Indonesia shrouded the city state.

The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit 401 at 12:00 on Friday (04:00 GMT) – the highest in the country’s history.

The haze is also affecting Malaysia, with another 100 schools closed in the south of the country.

But Indonesia said the other affected countries share in the blame for the blazes. From CNN:

“The slash-and-burn technique being used is the cheapest land-clearing method and it is not only used by local farmers, but also employees of palm oil investors including Singaporean and Malaysian companies,” Hadi Daryanto, a senior official at Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry, told Indonesian media.

“We hope the governments of Malaysia and Singapore will tell their investors to adopt proper measures so we can solve this problem together.”

(Americans share in the blame, too. Palm oil is used in everything from lipstick to margarine and biofuel, and American imports from cleared Southeast Asian forests continue to skyrocket.)

Cloud seeding may sound futuristic, but it’s been practiced in the U.S. since the first half of the last century, including by water managers in California [PDF] eager to fill their reservoirs. It’s controversial because it can be unreliable and because it involves dumping chemicals, such as silver iodide, into the atmosphere. We’ll soon find out whether it’s enough to douse Indonesia’s unneighborly fire problem.

Information On Green Energy, Its Sources As well as Usage Patterns

What Is Green Energy:

As the amounts of air pollution continue to increase, we must try really hard to find the most convenient way of creating energy. As a result, experts have generated a modern type of energy– Green Energy, that is derived from recyclable and eco friendly methods. This is non-conventional kind of energy which not just eradicates unwanted impurities from our surroundings but also decreases air pollution.

Since this energy is manufactured from natural resources thus they have absolutely no adverse effects on atmosphere or earth surface. Because of increasing concerns about global warming and resource depletion, it has become essential to search for a lot more environmental friendly and healthier choices. Alternate forms of energy such as wind, water and sun are in use since ancient times because they are clean for the air and good for you.

This part of my article covers information on kinds of alternate energy types. If you want to find out more relating to this topic, you could check out Icarus Energy.com that is an excellent website about energy sources.

Solar Energy:

Solar energy, obtained from sun, is the most common kind of heat and light energy. This form of energy is used for recharging devices, heating and lighting reasons. Earlier sun was utilized for drying wet items but after the popular energy crises of 1973, solar energy has been tapped to convert into several forms. Investigators have made special photovoltaic cells made of semiconducting components which capture photons and convert them into electric energy. This energy can be used for lighting as well as re-charging reasons. Apart from this, conducting materials are used for designing solar water heaters and solar cookers that are used for cooking food and heating water. The awful part about solar energy is that its setup is pretty costly and it needs lots of space for functioning therefore they are used for private projects and large government tasks only.

Hydropower:

Hydroelectricity or hydropower is derived from fast running river waters which are accumulated in large dams and rotated with the help of turbines to get changed into electricity. Apart from electricity production, the potential of running water is utilized for functioning machinery and for irrigation reasons. The application of water mill energy is seen in the equipments designed for sawing stone or even wood and for separating flour from grain. Building hydropower setup is very high priced and cannot be done privately thus only government and collaborative government-corporate projects can manage these large scale projects. You can get more info regarding hydropower if you check out content on green energy by Icarus. The only disadvantages of using hydropower is that they limit the quality of wildlife and affect water taste.

Wind Energy:

The moving blades of huge fans capture the energy of winds moving with high velocity. The rotating blades of the massive fan are connected to internal generators that capture wind speed and channelize it for creating electricity. However, the standard use of wind energy across the world continues to be very diminished because it may be used in only those regions where wind velocity is way too high, this technology is very pricey and the machinery useful for establishing fans is pretty loud. Most wind farms are private setups which sell their electricity to public utility sectors. This energy type produces 0 pollution and is provided to farms, ranches, homes and other domestic sectors. Check out Icarus green energy web-site if you need more data regarding wind energy.

Geothermal Energy:

Geothermal energy is a kind of steam energy tapped from hot water found beneath the earth surface. The high potential energy of steam is tapped and rotated around by turbines. It is utilized for powering electric generators which are used for domestic heating requirements. Geothermal energy is not accessible as a result of insufficient natural landscapes. It is common in volcanic locations and tropical belts. The biggest site of natural geothermal energy is the state of Ca that is famous for its warm water baths and geysers. This energy form is favored because of its low emissions. This energy form leads to minimal weather changes, can be used all day and night but it also impacts the stability of surrounding land.

Summary:

Due to increasing requirements for energy in numerous areas, it has become important to generate new types of energy with each passing day. Green energy investments have incredible chance in coming future. You can get energy regarding making investments from any green energy website.
