The Cubs Almost Blew It

I’ve been vaguely rooting for Cleveland in the World Series this year. Mostly this is because Cleveland is sort of a hard-luck city, and two championships in one year seems like a nice thing for them. But mostly it’s because of my deep insight into the true passion of Cubs fans. For example:

If the Cubs won this year, fans would have to give up all this. No more lovable losers. No more humblebragging about how the Cubs always find a way to blow it. No more genuine bragging about not winning a World Series since the fall of the Roman Empire. No more generational bonding over stories about Cub incompetence.

And most important, no more uniqueness, the true source of Cub pride. If the Cubs won, they’d be just another team and next year would be just another year. That’s what happened in Boston. Now, the Red Sox are nothing more than another garden variety moneyball team. Before long they’ll probably move out to a shiny new billion-dollar sports palace in the suburbs. And why not? There’s nothing special about them anymore.

This could have happened to you, Chicago. But it looks like you’ve dodged that bullet. Congratulations!

Picture #1: On the Verizon website, the number of “agents” who are eagerly waiting for you to call is…a random number between 1 and 15. The wait time is also a random number.

Picture #2: Congratulations, particle physicists! You have finally isolated the rare glutino and packaged it for the masses. Who says basic science is useless?

Picture #3: Rejection letter to George Orwell for Animal House: “What was needed, (someone might argue), was not more communism but more public-spirited pigs.” So I’ve heard.

Picture #4: Sort of speaks for itself.

And a video: I’m not sure Hopper ever noticed what was going on.

Ireland Is Latest Country to Approve Gay Marriage

I don’t have anything profound to say about this, but it’s just a nice piece of good news. And I could use some good news these day:

Irish voters have resoundingly backed amending the constitution to legalize gay marriage, leaders on both sides of the Irish referendum declared Saturday after the world’s first national vote on the issue.

As the official ballot counting continued, the only question appeared to be how large the “yes” margin of victory from Friday’s vote would be. Analysts said the “yes” support was likely to exceed 60 percent nationally when official results are announced later Saturday.

Congratulations to Ireland. This is both a human and humane gesture in a world that could use more of them.

Yet Another Partial Transcript From Darrell Issa

Mother Jones

I’m not feeling too well this morning, so I’m going to take a break. Maybe I’ll be back later depending on how things go.

In the meantime, since I don’t want to leave Richard Cohen at the top of the blog all day, check out Steve Benen here on yet another “partial transcript” from Darrell Issa, who apparently is desperate to drum up some kind of Obamacare scandal but can’t actually find one. So instead he leaked a few pages of testimony from HealthCare.gov’s chief project manager which, as you can guess, left out a few wee details. And which news organization fell for this transparent trick? Did you guess CBS? Congratulations!
