This morning, Hopper was busily scratching her cheek on this handy chair when a tail walked by. What’s a self-respecting cat to do? Snag at it with feline reflexes, of course. Hilbert was not amused. The funny part about this is that Hilbert attacks Hopper’s tail too, but as near as I can tell she never even notices. I think she must lack nerve endings in her tail or something.

Who will be the Republican nominee for president? Beats me. GOP voters are obviously in a weird mood this year. But let’s suppose two things:

The folks who are currently polling below 3-4 percent have no chance.
The non-politicians will eventually fade out or implode. No Trump, no Carson, no Fiorina.

If—if!—those things are true, we’re left with Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz. So how are they doing? I was curious, so I took a look at only those three on HuffPost Pollster. I don’t really have any point to make, so I won’t make one. Just consider this raw data.

New Unemployment Claims Drop to Modern Low

A friend writes to point out that initial unemployment claims have continued dropping, and are now at their lowest level in 40 years. In fact, if you look at unemployment claims as a percentage of total employment, they’re at their lowest level in forever:

I’m not quite sure what to make of this. Unemployment claims have been steadily dropping since the mid-80s, and didn’t spike during the Great Recession nearly as much as they did during the recessions of the 70s and 80s. Is this because the rules have gotten tougher? Because employers aren’t laying off as many people as they used to during recessions? Or is it just an artifact of the drop in workforce participation, which means fewer marginally attached workers are getting permanent jobs in the first place?

I’m not sure. But initial claims are now below 0.2 percent of the workforce, a modern record.

Critics Pan New Show "21st Century"

Charlie Stross is unhappy:

I want to complain to the studio execs who commissioned the current season of “21st century”; your show is broken.

I say this as a viewer coming in with low expectations. Its predecessor “20th century” plumbed the depths of inconsistency with the frankly silly story arc for world war II. It compounded it by leaving tons of loose plot threads dangling until the very last minute, then tidied them all up in a blinding hurry in that bizarre 1989-92 episode just in time for the big Y2K denouement (which then fizzled). But the new series reboot is simply ridiculous! It takes internal inconsistency to a new low, never before seen in the business: the “21st century” show is just plain implausible.

So far, I give the 21st century two stars. It might be better if they’d just release the whole thing at once so I could binge watch it, instead of forcing me to live through this nonsense week by week.

Hmmm. What happened here? There is no documentary record, so perhaps if Hopper hides no one will connect her with it. Worth a try! Meanwhile, Hilbert hangs around absentmindedly, not realizing that his sister is doing her best to pin the rap entirely on him. That’s family values, folks.

Whose Tax Plan Is Best For Millionaires?

So here’s where we stand. Marco Rubio has a tax plan with a top rate of 35 percent that promises to boost our economic growth rate to 3.5 percent per year. Jeb Bush then came out with his plan, which has a top rate of 28 percent and a growth rate of 4 percent per year. Then Donald Trump announced his plan, which has a top rate of 25 percent and a growth rate of 6 percent per year.

Who’s next? Carly? I advise her to announce a plan that has a top rate of 20 percent and promises growth of 8 percent per year. Ridiculous? Sure, but who’s going to call her on it? I mean, what’s Bush going to do? Get into an argument about whose supply-side growth assumptions are the most out of touch with reality?

Besides, she has to compete with Ben Carson, who doesn’t have an official tax plan but has vaguely said he likes the idea of a flat 10 percent tax based on the Biblical practice of tithing—though he’s been a little wobbly on whether his tax rate would really be exactly 10 percent. I guess even God can be improved on.

In case you’re curious, here are the top tax rates on the rich from each of the leading candidates. The most dynamic defenders of free enterprise are at the top, while the losers are at the bottom:

Carson: 10-15 percent
Paul: 14.5 percent
Huckabee: ~17 percent (23 percent FairTax that eliminates the payroll tax)
Trump: 25 percent
Bush: 28 percent
Christie: 28 percent
Rubio: 35 percent
Fiorina: ?
Cruz: ?

Here’s the Real Clear Politics take on the Republican primary race as of Friday. I’ve modified it to show only the top six candidates—which, let’s face it, are the only ones we’re really interested in at this point. Note that this is not a single poll, but an aggregate of the most recent four national polls, all taken after last week’s debate.

Needless to say, you shouldn’t treat this as gospel. Other poll aggregators may show slightly different results. Still, it’s a pretty good roadmap to the current state of play.

UPDATE: Here’s the HuffPost Pollster version of the same chart. I decided I didn’t really care about Ted Cruz, so I ditched him.

I analyze the news for you:

What Jeb Bush said this morning:

Everybody freaks out about the deficit….But if we grow our economy at a faster rate, the dynamic nature of tax policy will kick in….I’m more optimistic.

What he meant:

We should freak out about the deficit only when a Democrat is president. I’m a Republican. When Republicans are president we don’t worry about the deficit. We just cut taxes on the rich.

The EPA Is Coming After Your Defeat Devices

If you’re using a defeat device on your car, you’d better remove it ASAP. New testing protocols are coming in the wake of the VW scandal:

The EPA is sending a letter to auto manufacturers to explain that it may test or require testing of vehicles in an environment that would resemble normal driving conditions, the official said.

….“We have to be concerned about whether or not there are other defeat devices out there that we have not been able to detect,” EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said at an event hosted by The Wall Street Journal this week. “This was particularly difficult for us to detect. We got there.”

Sounds like more big-government bullying by the EPA to me. I expect Republicans to do the right thing and denounce this immediately.
