Over the weekend, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks wiped out buildings, infrastructure, and historic sites in Nepal, killing more than 4,000 people, injuring thousands more, and leaving tens of thousands homeless. As fatalities continue to rise after the worst earthquake to hit the country in more than 80 years, the Wall Street Journal reports that the disaster could cost the country $5 billion to rebuild over the next five years.

So far, rescue teams have struggled to reach remote villages, and news orgs are having a hard time getting reporters into the country. This amateur aerial drone footage, zooming in and out above the devastation in Kathmandu, shows why:

Despite decades of outrage over the widespread use of sweatshops and child labor overseas, cheap fashionable garments have continued to prove irresistible to American customers. On the latest Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said the appetite for such low-priced fashion has gotten to the point where Americans now purchase an average 64 new items of clothing every year.

“For the consumer, low prices are fantastic,” Oliver explained. “And nowadays those clothes will even look good because trendy clothing is cheaper than ever and cheap clothing is trendier than ever.”

But Oliver reminds us that all of the cheap fashion we’re scoring comes at an incredibly high moral price. Watch below:

Fire and Ice

By Jonathan Mingle

ST. MARTIN’S PRESS

What kills more people than HIV, malaria, and TB combined? The unlikely answer is soot and smoke from cookstoves and hearths. In Fire and Ice, Jonathan Mingle explains how this dirty residue, a.k.a. black carbon, is one of the world’s most dangerous and least understood pollutants, leading to millions of premature deaths annually and contributing more to glacial melting than carbon dioxide does. His narrative humanizes the casualties—from drought-stricken California farmers to Himalayan families losing their water sources—and makes a compelling case for how we can clear our skies.

Spring Chicken

By Bill Gifford

GRAND CENTRAL

You’ve got to be a tad loony to think you can defy death, and so it is with Bill Gifford’s cast of anti-aging researchers and obsessives, whose strategies range from testosterone shots to self-starvation. But nothing seems to beat sheer will: People who thrive with age—take the 75-year-old woman who runs a sub-seven-minute mile—don’t get there with magic pills, hormones, or even red wine. What they do is move around like crazy—”use it or lose it,” Gifford explains. In one chapter, he introduces us to Okinawa, home to the world’s highest concentration of centenarians, who’ve discovered the best longevity method of all: ikigai, a reason to get up in the morning.

John Oliver: Big Pharma Is Like Your High School Boyfriend, Only Concerned with "Getting Inside You"

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Following a three-month hiatus, John Oliver has returned with a brilliant takedown against pharmaceutical companies and the billions of dollars executives pump into peddling drugs to doctors around the country.

“Drug companies are a bit like high school boyfriends,” Oliver explained on Last Week Tonight. “They’re much more concerned with getting inside of you than being effective once they’re in there.”

According to one report referenced on Sunday’s show, nine out of ten drug companies allocate significantly more on marketing than actual scientific research–a practice Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently announced she is working to reverse. Much of the money is spent on attractive representatives, many of whom are clueless to the products they’re selling, to push the drugs. Some reps even dangle complimentary meals to persuade doctors into cashing in.

“If Charlie Manson brought me a free lunch everyday, I’d at least listen to his sales pitch on forehead swastikas.”

Mitt Romney Won’t Run for President in 2016

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

It’s official: Mitt Romney will not seek the presidency for a third time. After some news outlets reported he would announce a run on a call with donors this morning, a statement leaked in which Romney said, “I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee.” Here’s a look back at what Mitt 3.0 could have been, as well as some highlights from 2012.

He was going to run as a liberal.

He had plans to be a born-again climate hawk.

He was going to face some resistance from the Kochs.

He had a new private equity conflict-of-interest problem.

We were deprived the chance to revisit the controversy over Romney’s lengthy history of outsourcing.

Also, this little problem:

Thanks for the memories, Mitt:
