What do pandas, the Pope and Neil Young have in common?

This week, all three are making biofuel headlines!

National Geopgraphic reports that researchers have found a microbe in panda droppings capable of efficiently converting plant waste into biofuel.
Pope Francis has got himself some new wheels — a 1984 Renault that can run on biofuel, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
In Boston, Singer-songwriter Neil Young gave a live performance of his new composition, “Drive My Car”, an ode to his 1959 Lincoln Continental that runs on… you guessed it: ethanol!

You can watch a video of the performance right here:

What’s the alternative?

What’s the alternative?

Posted 26 August 2013 in

National

Today, the Washington Post editorialized against the Renewable Fuel Standard, relying on tired, oil industry arguments against the only policy that’s reducing our nation’s reliance on fossil fuel.

But since we’ve already published several posts fact-checking these sort of editorials, we’re not going to dive into the particulars of this column. Instead, we wanted to respond specifically to the Post’s policy recommendation:

The Post editorial board admits that their own preferred policy alternative, a carbon tax, would be difficult (if not impossible) to get through Congress. We wholeheartedly agree. In fact, without the low-carbon alternative fuels supported by the RFS, such as cellulosic ethanol, a carbon tax would be completely unworkable (both politically and economically).

So what’s the Post’s solution? Lawmakers should “choose another policy that encourages conservation and innovation without absurd central planning.” Conveniently enough, they do not offer a second alternative. While it’s easier to simply wish away the complex politics that surround our energy policy, we’re happy to remind lawmakers that the Renewable Fuel Standard already encourages conservation and innovation by helping reduce GHG emissions, making ethanol cheaper than gasoline and spurring the creation of the cellulosic ethanol industry. And while some would like to pretend that the pre-RFS status quo represented a nostalgic time of perfect market competition, we recognize that without the century of subisidies and preferential treatment enjoyed by the fossil fuel industry, alternative fuels face a much steeper uphill climb. The Renewable Fuel Standard is not “absurd central planning.” It’s a market-based solution to a long-standing economic challenge.

Bloomberg News: Ethanol’s Discount to Gasoline Expands on Outlook for Ample Corn

Posted 22 August 2013 in

National

From Bloomberg News:

Ethanol’s discount to gasoline expanded the first time in a week on speculation that next month’s corn harvest will yield ample supply of the biofuel feedstock and reduce costs for producers.

The spread, or price difference, widened 2.75 cents to 71.18 cents a gallon at 12:03 p.m. New York time, as participants in the annual Professional Farmers of America Midwest crop tour estimated higher yields in corn-producing states such as South Dakota and Ohio after inspecting fields. One bushel of corn makes at least 2.75 gallons of ethanol.

“Medium to long-term, it looks like there will be plenty of corn,” said Justin Dirico, manager of the biofuels desk at Eagle Energy Brokers LLC in New York.

With yet more reports of ethanol’s discount compared to gasoline, it is clear that the RFS helps ensure lower costs to consumers as well as the ability to both feed and fuel across the country.

Don’t let the oil industry fool you: AAA doesn’t want to repeal the RFS

Posted 18 July 2013 in

From Domestic Fuel:

This week the American Petroleum Institute (API) kicked off an new anti-ethanol and anti-biofuels TV and print campaign and in a commercial being aired in South Dakota, criticized the increased use of ethanol and E15 as a motor fuel. The 30-second commercials mention Triple A (AAA) and the organization has come out publicly and said the ads misrepresent their position on E15 and is calling for API to have the ads taken down.

“This commercial is the latest in a series of communications on social media and elsewhere which portray AAA as being “anti-ethanol.” This is not the case,” according to AAA’s statement. “AAA South Dakota remains a strong supporter of image002-2the development and use of alternative fuels such as ethanol. The auto club believes ethanol fuels provide motorists with a choice at the pump that promotes U.S. energy independence, supports American and South Dakotan jobs and can save the consumer money.”

Droughts could hit food production in 2020s, report warns

Posted 11 July 2013 in

National

From The Guardian:

Droughts could devastate food production in the England by the 2020s, according to a report from the government’s official climate change advisers. Without action, increasingly hot and dry summers may mean farmers will face shortfalls of 50% of the water they currently use to grow crops. The report, from the climate change committee (CCC), also warns that current farming practices may be allowing the country’s richest soils to be washed or blown away.

National Geographic: The Great Energy Challenge

National Geographic: The Great Energy Challenge

Posted 27 June 2013 in

National

Just as President Obama’s Climate Action Plan stepped back into the spotlight, National Geographic this week hosted the Great Energy Challenge; a three year initiative to “help all of us better understand the breadth and depth of our current energy situation” and help mitigate the dangerous effects of climate change.

A key focus on the Great Energy Challenge is the future development and scalable production of renewable fuel, ranging from traditional to advanced and cellulosic ethanol. In a National Geographic online poll over 57 percent of people say that renewable fuel is worth continued investment. Earlier this week Fuels America also released a poll that states that more than 75 percent of consumers want more renewable fuel options at gas stations.

It is clear that the demand for renewable fuel is on the upswing. The Great Energy Challenge highlights several nationwide and state level efforts, led by companies around the country, to develop new technologies and produce renewable fuel. There is also a nationwide effort to develop and perfect “drop-in biofuels,” which have the potential to help wean the U.S. off our addition to oil and in the process slow down the progression of fossil fueled climate change.

The development of these fuels will allow consumers increased access to renewable fuel without extensive rebuilding of infrastructure across the country. In its most recent annual outlook, the International Energy Agency said that cellulosic biofuel could be cost-competitive as early as 2015 if the right policies were accepted.

Policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) are already promoting the growth and production of renewable fuel. President Obama’s support for the RFS is a strong indication of the commitment to lessen the impact of climate change and get us off fossil fuels once and for all.

Response to House E&C Committee White Paper on Energy Policy

Posted 24 June 2013 in

The bottom line:

Our nation’s continued reliance on oil ensures that American families and our economy will continue to be burdened by the high and volatile prices of the global oil market and the national security challenges that come with oil dependence, as well as a greenhouse gas intensive transportation fuel supply. The Renewable Fuel Standard is the single-most important policy driving our nation toward oil alternatives.

Read the full letter to Reps. Upton and Waxman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee on the energy policy implications of the Renewable Fuel Standard.
