Friday Cat Blogging – 26 May 2017

Mother Jones

Someone in comments the other day was kvetching about the fact observing that I tend to crop my photos pretty tightly, and that’s true. I like sharp, tightly-cropped pictures. Still, variety is the spice of life, and my fondness for close-ups means that you rarely get to see Hilbert or Hopper in action. I use the word “action” advisedly, since that mostly just means walking around. But even that’s something, so today you get an exciting action shot of Hilbert.

Even with the fancy new camera, this is surprisingly hard to do. Cats in motion are frequently blurry or out of focus, and the follow-focus feature of the Lumix is pretty hit-or-miss. All that said, here it is. Photographic proof that Hilbert doesn’t just sit around 24 hours a day.

Today’s homage to Donald Trump is part of my relentless quest to bring my readers the finest possible blogging experience. Here’s how far I’m willing to go: yesterday I drove out to one of Irvine’s leading fast food emporiums and bought a taco bowl. $5.79! I brought it home, got out my camera, and introduced it to the cats. It was so disgusting they immediately ran away and wouldn’t come back. Eventually it fell apart.

So then I went to one of Irvine’s leading supermarkets and bought a box of tostada shells. $4.99! I filled one up with cat food and then added a dollop of sour cream for that authentic south-of-the-border flavor. Hilbert still wasn’t having any. Luckily, Hopper was intrigued by the sour cream. She jumped up and started licking it, and thanks to the burst mode on my camera I got 40 or 50 shots of this. Within minutes my homage was finished. Enjoy!

Our cats’ favorite activity is playing under the sheets after we strip the bed and put on freshly laundered bedclothes. Last week I stuck the camera under the sheets and snapped a few photos while the cats went nuts. Look at those eyes! Like saucers! This was taken during one of the few microseconds when Hilbert wasn’t just a blur.

Here is Hilbert in one of his favorite places, up on the patio cover. He is, as usual, puzzled about why one of his servants is constantly pointing some big black thing with a shiny eye in his face.

This is, by the way, the sharpest picture you’ve ever seen of Hilbert. Here at MoJo, mobile users have outpaced desktop dinosaurs like me for a while, and we’re eventually planning to cater more to this crowd by featuring higher resolution photos. I’ve decided to get a head start and give it a try. For the past few days, all my homemade photos and charts have been displayed in high res.

The upside, of course, is that everything looks better if you’re using a high-res device like a smartphone or—especially—a tablet with a retina display. My charts look great! The downside is that high-res images are considerably bigger, so if you’re on a slow mobile connection it might take a few more seconds for everything to load. And if you’re using a low-res desktop monitor, you won’t notice much difference at all. Comments welcome.

Just as I thought that Hilbert and Hopper had given up on sleeping with each other, suddenly they’ve decided to occupy the pod together. This mostly happens when Hopper gets in the pod and then Hilbert asserts his ownership rights1 by jumping on top of her. In the past, Hopper would usually just vacate. It wasn’t worth the trouble of staying. But lately she’s been holding her ground. For at least a little while each day, the pod is just an adorable mound o’ cats.

1In fairness, it is his pod, by right of tenancy. Hopper never really liked the pods that much, but Hilbert has been a faithful pod companion on my desk ever since we brought him home.

I’m alive. Barely. My congestion decided to migrate up into my ear canals yesterday, so every time I cough my right ear blocks up and the world starts spinning. Unfortunately, I cough a lot. It doesn’t last too long, but it happens often enough to keep my stomach in a permanent state of mild nausea. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

Anyway, the cats are all fine. Here’s Hilbert camping out on the fence.

Friday Cat Blogging – 9 December 2016

Mother Jones

For years we’ve had a regular feline visitor to our house. However, a few days ago, for the first time I can remember, he visited during daylight hours. This caused considerable alarm, and in the ensuing dustup both of our cats somehow ended up on the roof. I’m not quite sure how or why, but after it was all over they roamed around for a while and then settled down on the patio cover. As you can see, Hilbert is keeping a watchful eye out for any further invasions of his territory.

Speaking of territory, the Downing Street mouse problem has still not been solved. So now, in addition to Larry, Palmerston, and Gladstone, the staff has added a mother and son pair of cats, Evie and Ossie. We now have an army of five cats on Downing Street patrol. Would you like to see them and hear about all the inside dirt? (Turf wars! Dog terrorizing! Tarantulas!) This is the kind of thing for which tabloids are really and truly your best source. Forget the Guardian. I recommend the Sun or the Mirror for this story.

Hilbert has decided to adopt a life of the mind. In his new, more scholarly persona, he will be enriching his retirement years1 with the finest books ever written. As you can see, he has decided to start with Z and work backwards.

1Cat retirement starts at age three.

Hilbert, like all cats, likes to hunker down on any kind of flat object you might lay down somewhere: clothes, paper, books, iPads, you name it. But like all cats, he’s also very hard to fool. He only wants to lie down on this stuff if it’s somehow annoying to the humans. Here’s the morning newspaper, for example. There’s a bunch of sections I’m not reading at the moment. He ignores those. The only part he’s interested in is the section I happen to be reading at the moment.

This seems to be universal behavior. How do they do it? Do they track our eyes, so they know what we’re looking at? Is it feline telepathy? Whatever it is, the message is clear: You are paying attention to something other than me, and you need to knock it off. Capiche?

Friday Kitten Blogging – 15 July 2016

A friend of mine was visiting this week and got a new kitten while he was here. Why? Because the breeder happened to be nearby, so it was more convenient than making a special trip later just to pick her up. As a result, our house endured a kitten invasion for several days. She has no name yet, but she’s a calico Siberian with all the exuberance of kittenhood—which means that most of the time she looked about like this:

However, she occasionally slowed down enough for my camera’s shutter to catch a better view:

Isn’t she adorable? Unfortunately, that view was not shared by everybody. We mostly kept her isolated in her own room, but we took her out to play periodically and occasionally she squirmed away, as kittens will. Here’s her first—and only—meeting with Hilbert:

Poor Hilbert. He lasted about five seconds under her gimlet eye. Then he turned tail and ran under the bed. Courage is not his strong point.

Anyway, she’s a tiny fluffball who is going to grow up into a great big fluffball. That’s the way of Siberians. And I have a note for scientists: she currently weighs nothing. I suspect that her fur has antigrav properties, which someone should probably look into. Could be useful.
