Arizona Suggests Forced Suicide For Death Row Inmates

Mother Jones

It’s getting tougher and tougher to obtain the lethal cocktail used to execute prisoners convicted of capital crimes:

Now Arizona has responded with a new — and some say bizarre — solution to this quandary: Death row inmates can bring their own execution drugs. The state’s manual for execution procedures, which was revised last month, says attorneys of death row inmates, or others acting on their behalf, can obtain pentobarbital or sodium Pentothal and give them to the state to ensure a smooth execution.

Note to conservatives: sometimes you just have to give up. Do you really care that much about killing lots of bad guys as opposed to letting them rot in prison for the rest of their lives? It might be time to let go and save your energy for other battles. This one is getting absurd.

Only 14% of Trump Voters Want to Invade Mexico

Mother Jones

According to a new PPP poll released today, here are some of the views of people who voted for Donald Trump:

Now, before you all get too bent out of shape, I’d like to point out that there’s some good news here: only 14 percent of Trump’s supporters want to invade Mexico. Not so bad, eh?

I’d also like to point out that a week ago I predicted that lots of Trump supporters would hear about the Bowling Green massacre but only a few would hear that it didn’t actually happen. Well, I was right. Belief in the BGM outscored disbelief 51-23 percent. And isn’t that what’s really important? That I was right?

Hopper loves to putter around on the roof, and the other day she saw me in the bedroom while she was up there. She knows perfectly well how to get down (jump on tree, jump on fence, then jump to ground), but as soon as she saw me she immediately demanded to be let in through the window. This was never going to happen, since I know that if I did it once she would force me into screen-removing slavery for the rest of my life. However, it did provide an opportunity for catblogging fodder. At some point, Hilbert somehow got wind of what was going on, so he came up to see what the fuss was about. Hopper appears to be sharing a secret of some kind with him here, but what? No human will ever know.

Trump’s Immigration Order Has Made Him More Popular

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

A couple of weeks ago I said we’d need to wait a couple of weeks to see how President Trump’s immigration order affected his favorability rating. Well, those couple of weeks are up. Here’s how he’s doing:

Trump was already on a post-inauguration upward swing, and his immigration order seems to have kept it going. He’s gained more than three points of favorability since he announced it—and that’s despite the chaos surrounding the rollout and the near-daily revelations of other incompetence on his part. Buckle up.

Members of the Trump administration are starting to drop like flies, and I figure someone should keep track. Note that I’m keeping a spot open for Betsy DeVos in hopes that I can fill it in sometime soon:

So who’s next? Well, there’s this from Rep. Seth Moulton (D–Mass.):

“What I’ve heard from behind the scenes,’’ Moulton said during a telephone interview on Monday, is that Mattis and others who were left out of Trump’s decision-making loop on the immigration order are asking one another, “What will make you resign? What’s your red line?”

Stay tuned.

CNN Turns Down Opportunity to Interview Kellyanne Conway

CNN, which is the target of a boycott by the Trump administration, turned down an opportunity to have Kellyanne Conway on its Sunday show:

Why did CNN do this? If it’s just pique over being denied access to Pence, then boo. If it’s because Conway is such a serial liar that no self-respecting news outlet should give her air time, then yay. But which is it?

Our furballs don’t tend to curl up together much anymore. They still play, mostly by chasing each other around the house like crazed lemmings during the witching hour (about 8 pm or so), but I don’t often get pictures of them together.

But a few days ago they were kinda sorta curled up next to each other on the bed. Luckily for you, I have an upstairs camera and a downstairs camera, so I was able to record this for posterity before they headed downstairs for the food bowl. Hopper is sporting her usual disdainful look at daddy’s omnipresent camera. Teenagers. What can you do?

On TV, Trump’s Inauguration Was the Worst in 40 Years

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I guess we’ve moved on from crowd size at Trump’s inauguration to TV audience size. Interestingly, Trump has apparently decided not to lie about this, but only to mislead. Just for the record, then, here’s the share of the population that has tuned in to watch first-term inaugurations over the past 40 years:

Ratings here. January population here.

Obama’s Back

Barack Obama had to hand his @POTUS Twitter handle to Donald Trump Friday afternoon. But the now ex-president isn’t ditching the social media platform. After he’d taken off from DC in a helicopter, Obama revved up his old Twitter handle to reassure people that (after a brief vacation) he’d be back.

Trump and the Strong Dollar: A One-Day Follow-Up

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Yesterday the Wall Street Journal blared the news that Donald Trump’s comments on the dollar being too strong had sent the dollar “reeling.” I suggested we might want to wait a few days before buying into this, but it turns out I was wrong. We only had to wait one day:

This follows the usual formula: (a) Trump says something, (b) a related financial index reacts instantly, and (c) by the next day everything is back to normal. I gather that there are folks on Wall Street who are writing algorithms to make money off this dynamic, but it’s unclear how long that can last. I mean, how many times can this happen before everyone realizes that Trump’s blather doesn’t really mean anything?
