Even Lots of Republicans Think the Feds Should Guarantee Health Care For All

Mother Jones

Via Pew Research, here’s another reason that Republicans might have more trouble than they think repealing Obamacare:

Republicans have been chanting “repeal and replace” for so long that people have started to believe the “replace” part. Even among Republicans, half of those with working-class incomes and a third of those with middle-class incomes believe the federal government ought to guarantee health coverage for everyone. It’s only rich Republicans who are dead set against it.

So what is Donald Trump going to do about that? Unfortunately, the answer is pretty obvious: he’s going to propose a replacement plan that does hardly anything for anyone and then he’s going to lie about it—loudly and relentlessly. Congressional Republicans will all join in, and the press will then report that the effect of the replacement plan is “controversial.” Because, really, who can say what it does? All those numbers are pretty confusing, after all.

I’m alive. Barely. My congestion decided to migrate up into my ear canals yesterday, so every time I cough my right ear blocks up and the world starts spinning. Unfortunately, I cough a lot. It doesn’t last too long, but it happens often enough to keep my stomach in a permanent state of mild nausea. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

Anyway, the cats are all fine. Here’s Hilbert camping out on the fence.

The NFL Sucks So Hard

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I don’t suppose anyone cares, but I just want to say for the record that I agree entirely with Bill Plaschke today:

Every relationship is built on honesty, so the San Diego Chargers should hear this as their moving vans are chugging up the 5 Freeway on their noble mission of greed.

We. Don’t. Want. You.

The NFL sucks so hard. They stayed out of Los Angeles for two decades desperately trying to prove that, by God, no city would get an NFL team unless they ponied up taxpayer dollars for a stadium. Now we’re about to have two teams, and for the exact same reason: to show San Diego that, by God, an NFL team won’t stay in a city unless they pony up taxpayer dollars for a better stadium. And not just any dollars. Enough dollars to satisfy the lords of football.

Did I mention just how hard the NFL sucks?

Donald Trump Is Worth About $3-4 Billion

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Bear with me here for a moment. I have a theory to share with you that might answer a long-debated question: how much is Donald Trump worth?

Here’s the theory: Trump likes rich people, but he doesn’t like people who are richer than him. This suggests that his cabinet picks might tell us just what it takes to be richer than Donald Trump. Here’s a revised version of my usual Swamp Watch chart:

The list tops out at $2.5 billion. This suggests that Trump is worth $3-4 billion, right in line with the Forbes estimate of $3.7 billion. Donald Trump has apparently been very careful to make sure that he’s the richest guy in his administration.

Google Searches for Hillary’s Emails Peaked After Comey’s Letter

As long as we’re on the subject of James Comey and Hillary’s emails, here’s a chart showing Google searches on the subject:

I know what you’re thinking. Are you ever going to give this a rest, Kevin? No, I’m not. There may be periods when I don’t happen to blog about it, but I’ll never give it a rest. This is the second time in five elections that an arm of the US government, rather than the voters, has appointed a US president. It will never, ever be far from my thoughts, and the least I can do is make this blog a one-stop shop for anyone collecting evidence about the effect of the letter Comey released 12 days before the election.

Why Are CDs Cheaper Than Digital Downloads?

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Last night I decided to buy a bunch of old-man albums from my youth that I’ve never gotten around to getting before. But old man though I might be, I am 21st century in my listening habits. I don’t need a bunch of CDs cluttering up my house, just digital downloads. And yet, I ended up with a bunch of CDs winging their way to my house.

Why? Because out of a dozen purchases at Amazon, the audio CD was cheaper in all but one case. And about half the time, the audio CD included download rights. So I was buying a CD plus a digital download for less than the price of the CD alone.

Can anyone explain this? I know Amazon has some weird pricing policies sometimes, but this seems even weirder than usual. They could have saved themselves both warehouse picking/packing time and shipping costs if they’d priced the digital a buck less than the CD, rather than the other way around. Possible explanations:

Most people consider digital files a convenience they’re willing to pay for. It saves them the time of having to rip a CD.
License rights something something something.
I was a subject in a large-scale study to find out how irrational consumers are.
Amazon is so used to losing money they just don’t care.

Any other guesses?

Chart of the Day: Food Is Cheap!

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Whenever you point out that inflation is pretty low these days, you can expect a flurry of responses along the lines of, “Have you seen the price of eggs lately?!?” As it happens, yes, I have. More to the point, the US government tracks food inflation, and it’s really low right now. As in negative. Food bought in stores (as opposed to restaurant food) is 2.2 percent cheaper than it was a year ago. This means the average family is spending about $150 less on groceries than they did in 2015. Happy Holidays!

Damnit.

The star, who launched his career with Wham! in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have “passed away peacefully at home”.

Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT.

Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Rest in peace.

As you can see, Hopper is getting ready for Christmas. She has spurned this particular cat bed since the day we bought it, but as soon as we put it under the tree she claimed it as her own.

Does our tree look a little sparse? I assure you we have plenty of ornaments higher up, but we decided to keep the bottom foot of the tree free of distraction. I assume this needs no explanation.

Raw Data: The US Trade Deficit

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I don’t have any special reason to post this except for the fact that trade is very much in the news following Donald Trump’s election victory. For the record, then, here’s the US trade deficit since 1980:

And just for extra fun, here’s the same chart excluding trade with China and imports of crude oil:

The main lesson here is that the US trade deficit hasn’t been spiraling out of control for the past decade. It’s been declining. And practically all of it for the past five years has been accounted for by oil and China.
