Saturday Night Live Sent a Message to the Electoral College. Just in Cases.

The Electrical College is set to vote tomorrow. There is a (likely doomed) effort underway to get Republican electors to vote for someone other than Donald Trump.

Last night, SNL aired a skit about this. To me, it is perfect.

Alec Baldwin also came back to 30 Rock to play President-Elect Donald Trump in this cold open about how he is stupid, which I’m sure the real Trump loved.

Trump’s Kids Will Always Get Insider Access, and Trump Doesn’t Care Who Knows It

Two days after promising that he will be “leaving” his businesses, which will henceforth be run by Eric and Don Jr., Donald Trump held a “private” get-together with various leaders of Silicon Valley firms, presumably to discuss his plans as president. Neither the assembled CEOs nor Trump revealed what they had talked about, but there were a couple of outside business executives who got a detailed briefing: his children.

It’s just corruption all the way down and Trump doesn’t care who knows it. Most presidents would at least do stuff like this on the sly, via telephone calls or personal visits. But Trump invites his kids to meetings and then brings in the cameras to make sure everyone knows they’re there. He knows there’s nothing we can do about it, and nothing that Republicans in Congress will do about it, so he figures he can just thumb his nose at the entire country. I guess he’s right.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has set up a hotline and opened “extended support sites” to respond to a high level of student anxiety about the election of Donald Trump as president.

Swamp Watch – 1 December 2016

The Washington Post says Donald Trump will pick Gen. James Mattis as his Secretary of Defense. I gather Mattis is pretty well respected, though I continue to believe that Trump himself was swayed solely by his “Mad Dog” nickname.

Mattis will need a special exemption from Congress, since he’s only been retired from the military for three years rather than the legally required seven. That will probably sail through, though I sort of hope it runs into at least a few bumps. I don’t have anything against Mattis, but the 7-year rule is a pretty good one. Civilian control of the military is an important tradition.

Ron Wyden Thinks We All Deserve the Truth About Russian Election Interference

This is a helluva tease:

That’s all the Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee except Dianne Feinstein, who joined all the Republicans in apparently not wanting this to be made public. That’s quite a partisan divide in a mostly nonpartisan committee. I wonder what it’s all about?

The ball’s in your court, President Obama. To quote our president-elect: at this point, what the hell do you have to lose?

Raw Data: How Big Is the Cloud Computing Market?

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I don’t know why this popped into my head, but given the enormous growth of cloud computing I got curious about how big a share it is of all computing. Roughly speaking, it turns out that total spending in 2016 is:

Cloud computing: $38 billion
All computing:1 $1.5 trillion

So cloud computing currently accounts for about 2.5 percent of all IT hardware and software spending. I have no point to make about this.

1Hardware and software only, not including telecom spending. CompTIA estimates that non-telecom spending is about $2.24 trillion in 2016 and that hardware and software account for about two-thirds of that.

Ari Emanuel Just Met With Donald Trump. Here’s What He Said About Mel Gibson In 2006.

Ari Emanuel, July 30, 2006:

At a time of escalating tensions in the world, the entertainment industry cannot idly stand by and allow Mel Gibson to get away with such tragically inflammatory statements…

People in the entertainment community, whether Jew or gentile, need to demonstrate that they understand how much is at stake in this by professionally shunning Mel Gibson and refusing to work with him, even if it means a sacrifice to their bottom line.

There are times in history when standing up against bigotry and racism is more important than money.

Let’s Figure Out What Happened Before We Start the Purges

Shorter Kelly Kleiman: Before Democrats devolve into internecine warfare, let’s actually figure out what happened on Tuesday. Was it a whitelash? Sulky Bernie supporters? Lack of enthusiasm from blacks and Latinos? Voter suppression? Right now, we’re flying blind, with only some crude data from exit polls and a few first attempts to make sense of the county-level data.

I’ll add one thing: whatever the answer turns out to be, it’s going to involve a shift of only a few percentage points. Everyone should be careful not to draw overly sweeping conclusions from this, even if it does make for good clickbait.

Weekly Poll Update: The Race Has Tightened Slightly, But Clinton Is Still Comfortably Ahead

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Let’s get our final weekly polling update out of the way early. Here’s Pollster:

Clinton is 6.1 percentage points ahead of Trump, down a point from last week. In the generic House polling, Pollster has Democrats ahead by 3.4 points, also down a point from last week. Sam Wang’s meta-margin has Hillary Clinton leading Trump by 2.6 percentage points, down a point and a half from last week:

Wang’s current prediction is that Clinton has a 99 percent chance of winning and will rack up 312 electoral votes. He still has the Senate tied, 50-50, with the probability of Democratic control at 76 percent. On the House side, he has Democrats up by about 3 percent, which is not enough for them to win back control.

Overall, it continues to look like Hillary Clinton will win by 4-5 points, with my personal 95 percent confidence range at 3-6 points. The Senate will either be tied 50-50 or Democrats will win 51-49. Either way, they’ll control the Senate. The House will remain in Republican hands. Whether those hands are Paul Ryan’s or someone else’s remains to be seen.
