Morsi Is Out: Images From the Egyptian Leader’s Final 48 Hours in Power

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

At 3 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, some 48 hours after the Egyptian military’s deadline for “the people’s action and demands” to receive a response “from all parties,” Egyptian troops deployed across Cairo and President Mohamed Morsi was ousted from power. A year after his democratic election—and two and a half years after a historic uprising brought down longtime leader Hosni Mubarak—Egypt has again plunged into uncertainty. In a televised announcement, General Fattah el-Sisi, the Egyptian defense minister, explained that the constitution would be suspended and the head of the Constitutional Court would become acting president until elections can be organized. “The armed forces will always be out of politics,” he asserted.

In the days preceding Morsi’s removal, throngs of Egyptians took to the streets in protest of the president. The military placed a travel ban on Morsi and leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and sent tanks and troops into Cairo, where Morsi supporters had taken to the streets, many armed with homemade shields and clubs. Here is a look at the last 48 hours of the Morsi regime:

Egyptian police special forces sit on their armored vehicle, protecting a bridge between Tahrir Square and Cairo University, where Muslim Brotherhood supporters gathered. Egypt’s leading democracy advocate, Mohamed El Baradei, and top Muslim and Coptic Christian clerics met Wednesday with the army chief to discuss a political road map for Egypt only hours before a military ultimatum to the Islamist president was set to expire.

Morsi supporters wear helmets and hold makeshift shields and batons. A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, to which Morsi belongs, tweeted that a “full military coup” was under way. As the army deadline passed, cheers echoed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, where thousands of protesters had gathered.

A demonstrator holds a flag while protesting in Tahrir Square against Morsi’s rule. Morsi said a 48-hour ultimatum set by the army “may cause confusion” and vowed to stick to his own plans to resolve the political crisis. The army warned it will intervene if the government and its opponents fail to heed “the will of the people.”

Morsi opponents celebrate as they gather at Tahrir Square. The head of Egypt’s armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, issued a declaration on Wednesday suspending the constitution and appointing the head of the Constitutional Court as interim head of state, effectively declaring the removal of Morsi.

Why the Story on Snowden and the NSA Doesn’t Add Up

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

What was Edward Snowden’s job when he worked for Booz Hamilton as a contractor to the NSA? Most of us have been under the impression that he was a systems administrator or network administrator. The initial Guardian story described him as a “former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton.” The same story mentioned him talking about things that were comprehensible only to his “fellow communication specialists.” The Washington Post described him as a “tech specialist” and quoted several sources who were baffled that someone with his background had access to all the documents he had released.

But in the video interview that introduced him to the world, he actually said that he was an “infrastructure analyst” who had previously worked for the CIA as a systems administrator and telecommunications systems officer. Today, the New York Times tells us that this job title is more revealing than it seems:

It is a title that officials have carefully avoided mentioning, perhaps for fear of inviting questions about the agency’s aggressive tactics: an infrastructure analyst at the N.S.A., like a burglar casing an apartment building, looks for new ways to break into Internet and telephone traffic around the world.

….A secret presidential directive on cyberactivities unveiled by Mr. Snowden — discussing the primary new task of the N.S.A. and its military counterpart, Cyber Command — makes clear that when the agency’s technicians probe for vulnerabilities to collect intelligence, they also study foreign communications and computer systems to identify potential targets for a future cyberwar.

Infrastructure analysts like Mr. Snowden, in other words, are not just looking for electronic back doors into Chinese computers or Iranian mobile networks to steal secrets. They have a new double purpose: building a target list in case American leaders in a future conflict want to wipe out the computers’ hard drives or shut down the phone system.

Stuart Staniford has suspected from the start that this might have been Snowden’s role. He wrote this three weeks ago:

I speculate that it is going to turn out that Snowden was an electronic intruder on the government payroll. Profiles describe him as secretive, fascinated with computers, and with knowledge of things like Tor (a peer-to-peer network for maintaining anonymity for computer communications). His last job was working at an NSA network threat detection center, suggesting knowledge of computer security. He had previously worked for the CIA, including overseas, suggesting a cyber-offense role….He may have had a lot of access — it’s very common for people working in computer threat detection to have access to platforms that see everything going on in the networks in order to look for potential threats.

I asked Glenn Greenwald via Twitter if Snowden had described his job in more detail during their interviews. He replied: “Sort of – he’s been depicted as far more primitive and lower-level than he really was.” I’m not sure precisely what that means, but it was all I got.

The fuzziness surrounding this is frustrating. I’d certainly like to know more about what Snowden did for the NSA. Did he work on network security? Was he a threat analyst of some kind? Did he actively search out vulnerabilities in other networks that NSA could exploit? Did he do this only at Booz Hamilton, or did he have basically the same job previously when he worked directly for the NSA? Exactly how much does he know about the NSA programs he’s been revealing to the world?

This whole affair gives me an odd vibe. For reasons I can’t figure out, I feel like everyone is holding back information. Obviously the government is, but it sure seems as if the journalists reporting this story have also declined to tell us everything they know. Maybe there’s good reason for this. But I wish I knew what it was.

And on a related note, I’d still like to know what’s on those other 37 PRISM slides. Or, at the very least, I’d like to know why I can’t know. The Washington Post published four of them a few days ago, and they revealed some pretty interesting information, including the number of targets of the PRISM program and the fact that PRISM allows a certain amount of real-time surveillance. I certainly don’t see anything on those slides that couldn’t have been released weeks ago. What’s more, Snowden apparently thought the entire set of slides should be revealed to the world. I’d like to know what changed his mind.

After Serenading a Dictator, Jennifer Lopez Won’t Say If She’ll Keep the Fee

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Gigli is no longer the most horrible thing J-Lo has ever done in her two-decade career.

Pop singer and actress Jennifer Lopez caused a stir over the weekend when news broke that she was appearing at the lavish birthday bash of Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the 56-year-old president—and human-rights-quashing, personality-cult-driven dictator—of Turkmenistan. The party was thrown at a Caspian Sea resort in the oil-rich Central Asian country on Saturday night. Lopez is reportedly the first big-time Western celebrity to visit Turkmenistan, and she performed at the event, singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” before a gathering of business executives and government officials.

She of course was paid for the performance, but her publicist, Shoshanna Stone of Edge Publicity, declined to divulge much she pocketed for serenading Berdymukhamedov. With human rights activists decrying her appearance at the party and many people calling for Lopez to return the cash or donate it to an outfit that opposes repression in Turkmenistan, Stone would not say whether J-Lo—who is worth a quarter of a billion dollars—is considering such a move.

Here is video of the gig. There are some amazing fireworks at the end.

The event was hosted by the China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), a state-owned Chinese oil and gas company based in Dongcheng District in Beijing that has seen its fair share of accidents and controversies. (CNPC did not respond to Mother Jones‘ multiple requests for comment.)

National Geographic: The Great Energy Challenge

Posted 27 June 2013 in

National

Just as President Obama’s Climate Action Plan stepped back into the spotlight, National Geographic this week hosted the Great Energy Challenge; a three year initiative to “help all of us better understand the breadth and depth of our current energy situation” and help mitigate the dangerous effects of climate change.

A key focus on the Great Energy Challenge is the future development and scalable production of renewable fuel, ranging from traditional to advanced and cellulosic ethanol. In a National Geographic online poll over 57 percent of people say that renewable fuel is worth continued investment. Earlier this week Fuels America also released a poll that states that more than 75 percent of consumers want more renewable fuel options at gas stations.

It is clear that the demand for renewable fuel is on the upswing. The Great Energy Challenge highlights several nationwide and state level efforts, led by companies around the country, to develop new technologies and produce renewable fuel. There is also a nationwide effort to develop and perfect “drop-in biofuels,” which have the potential to help wean the U.S. off our addition to oil and in the process slow down the progression of fossil fueled climate change.

The development of these fuels will allow consumers increased access to renewable fuel without extensive rebuilding of infrastructure across the country. In its most recent annual outlook, the International Energy Agency said that cellulosic biofuel could be cost-competitive as early as 2015 if the right policies were accepted.

Policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) are already promoting the growth and production of renewable fuel. President Obama’s support for the RFS is a strong indication of the commitment to lessen the impact of climate change and get us off fossil fuels once and for all.
