No matter how much we drill, gas prices keep going up

No matter how much we drill, gas prices keep going up

The news is out today that US crude oil production is has topped 7 million barrels/day, the highest it’s been since 1992. And based on the way the oil companies talk about the promise of domestic drilling, you’d expect today’s gas prices to be at record lows as well. But instead, a gallon of gas costs about 56 cents more than it did just two months ago!

Study after study has come out saying more drilling won’t work. Soaring and unpredictable gas prices are here to stay unless we diversify our fuel supply, thereby lowering and stabilizing prices.

According to an American Security Project report that came out on Tuesday, “we cannot drill our way out” of vulnerability to global oil markets. A recent report by IEA predicted that drilling our way to oil independence will still leave us with oil costing $215+ per barrel. And you guessed it: consumers filling up their tanks will foot the bill.

The oil industry is shamefully using concerns around high gas prices to pull the wool over consumers’ eyes and coax them into supporting domestic drilling. It’s no secret that more oil wells at home will only solve one “problem”: that the oil industry made “only” $118 billion in profits last year.

By diversifying our fuel supply with low-cost, homegrown renewable fuel, we will reduce our dependence on oil. This will mean lower and more consistent prices at the pump for us all.

Response to Attempts by API and GMA to Limit Consumer Choice

Response to Attempts by API and GMA to Limit Consumer Choice

Fuels America released the following statement today after the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s (GMA) announced they would take their attempt to block choices at the pump to the Supreme Court:

While drivers endure record high gas prices and a losing streak at the pump, oil companies Pass Go, Collect Millions and then proceed to ask for a Get out of Jail Free Card.

The national average price of a gallon of gas has increased for 34 consecutive days, landing today at $3.78 per gallon, the highest on record for the calendar day.

Oil alternatives like renewable fuel are the only way to end the oil industry’s monopoly on our fuel supply and lower prices at the pump. To ensure that Americans have choice at the pump, we must protect policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard and the Environmental Protection Agency’s approval of E15, a fuel that was tested for millions of miles before approval and is now in use, successfully, today.

While the oil industry may want to continue to roll the dice on rising fuel costs, Americans deserve better.

Ever sit down and really think about who the oil companies are actually helping? When looking at the numbers the answer is obvious – themselves. Check out our infographic for an overview on just how much the oil industry is making at our expense.

USDA Report: Climate Change Threatens Agriculture

USDA Report: Climate Change Threatens Agriculture

Posted 12 February 2013 in

National

The USDA has issued a new report which concludes that rising global temperatures will have acute, negative effects on US agriculture, including decreased crop yields and tremendous costs to farmers in the form of new pests and weeds.

Renewable fuel is working, right now, to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to changing climate patterns and threaten agriculture. Last year, renewable fuel use slashed GHG emissions from vehicles on America’s roads by 33 million metric tons.

Here’s what you need to know from USDA:

The climate is changing because of fossil fuel emissions, including those from oil:

Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and a variety of agricultural practices and industrial processes are rapidly increasing the atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. These changes in atmospheric composition are increasing temperatures, altering the timing and distribution of precipitation, and affecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems (p. 23).

Climate change will cause more droughts at home and around the globe:

Climate change projections into the future suggest an increased variability of temperature and precipitation…[and] emerging patterns project increased incidence of areas experiencing droughts and periods of more intense precipitation (p. 5).

Rising temperatures will affect food production in the US and hunger globally:

Crops … will be affected by increased exposure to extreme temperature events and increased risk of exceeding the maximum temperature thresholds, potentially leading to catastrophic losses (p. 6).

Livestock production in the US will also be impacted:

Changing climatic conditions affect animal agriculture in four primary ways: (1) feed-grain production, availability and price; (2) pastures and forage crop production and quality; (3) animal health, growth and reproduction; and (4) disease and pest distributions (p. 4).

Crying Fowl on the Chicken Council

Crying Fowl on the Chicken Council

Posted 24 January 2013 in

National

Big Food is running in circles to rehash old – and incorrect – claims about renewable fuel.

This time, it’s the National Chicken Council trying to scare football fans about the supply of chicken wings, and it’s déjà vu all over again: the industry repeatedly ignores the true drivers of food costs.

Despite the Chicken Council’s claims, the poultry industry hardly seems to be cutting back on feed and animal production.

According to market analysts, USDA estimates show more corn going to livestock and poultry feed, implying “that livestock and poultry producers used up more corn than earlier expected.” And, the same analysts noted, producers “do not seem to be cutting back but rather are increasing animal numbers” and animal weights.

Perhaps one reason is that far less of the corn crop is used in creating renewable fuel than the Chicken Council claims. Ethanol is produced from a different type of corn than the crop that people eat. This field corn, fed to livestock, delivers two beneficial products – the ethanol itself from the starch portion of the kernel – and the remaining part of the plant, with nutritious fiber, protein and more, is turned into valuable livestock feed.

(That feed, a beneficial co-product of creating renewable fuel, is increasingly being used by the poultry industry itself, because it packs more energy and protein than other feed sources.) When you look at both products, only 17% of the net corn crop goes to ethanol.

And it’s important to remember, the majority of food costs, nearly 84%, come from non-farm costs like marketing and energy costs. In fact oil prices ultimately drive food prices.

Whether you are rooting for the Ravens or the 49ers, Americans can enjoy their favorite food and the benefits of renewable fuel. The chicken lobby, meanwhile, should keep its eye on the ball and leave fans to enjoy the game.
