Did you know that the ethanol industry created 87,000 jobs last year? Or that American families saved about $1,200 dollars on gas in recent years because of ethanol? The Renewable Fuels Association has all of the facts about ethanol in a new video out today:

These are some of our favorite ethanol facts:

Today, ethanol makes up 10% of the U.S. gasoline supply. That’s up from less than 1% just 20 years ago.
Oil imports from OPEC are down 22% since the Renewable Fuel Standard was expanded in 2007.
Ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 40-50% when compared directly to gasoline.

If you’d like to learn more, RFA’s website has the full list of 40 ethanol facts, as well as sources for each.

Response to Attempts by API and GMA to Limit Consumer Choice

Response to Attempts by API and GMA to Limit Consumer Choice

Posted 21 February 2013 in

National

Fuels America released the following statement today after the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s (GMA) announced they would take their attempt to block choices at the pump to the Supreme Court:

While drivers endure record high gas prices and a losing streak at the pump, oil companies Pass Go, Collect Millions and then proceed to ask for a Get out of Jail Free Card.

The national average price of a gallon of gas has increased for 34 consecutive days, landing today at $3.78 per gallon, the highest on record for the calendar day.

Oil alternatives like renewable fuel are the only way to end the oil industry’s monopoly on our fuel supply and lower prices at the pump. To ensure that Americans have choice at the pump, we must protect policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard and the Environmental Protection Agency’s approval of E15, a fuel that was tested for millions of miles before approval and is now in use, successfully, today.

While the oil industry may want to continue to roll the dice on rising fuel costs, Americans deserve better.

POLITICO Op-Ed: The Renewable Fuel Standard Works

Posted 8 February 2013 in

National

This morning, POLITICO published an op-ed from the Union of Concerned Scientists and the DuPont Corporation, touting one powerful message:

The fuels of the future are here today, and we can thank Congress for enacting the Renewable Fuel Standard. This bedrock policy has brought us to the point where the first commercial facilities producing cellulosic renewable fuels are up and running, and several more are under construction. As a result of this innovative policy, the United States is a world leader in the development of this renewable energy source and has attracted billions of dollars of private-sector investment.

The Renewable Fuel Choice

The Renewable Fuel Choice

Posted 7 February 2013 in

Do you want to have a choice when it comes to fueling up your car? To have the option of using fuel that is cleaner, renewable and often, cheaper? If you are like the majority of Americans in this new poll, you do – 64% of people said they supported the RFS requirement that renewable fuel be incorporated into our nation’s fuel supply.

It’s too bad that some on Capitol Hill don’t agree with these Americans, and are, in fact, working counter to our best interests by trying to change the RFS. Attacks against the RFS ignore the reality that Americans want choice and they want alternatives to oil.

The companies of Fuels America are meanwhile working to create those alternatives; Congress must protect the RFS to ensure that Americans can have access to the clean fuels being developed.

To see the cellulosic industry at work you need merely look at the raft of companies that completed building facilities or started production in recent months. These include Abengoa, KiOR and INEOS Bio, to name a few. Meanwhile, DuPont, POET and others are preparing for new cellulosic ethanol projects in the months and years to come.

Those are just a handful of the projects planned or underway. Check out our infographic for an overview of more cellulosic innovation cropping up around the country and visit E2’s new website, Fueling Growth, for a map of more than 80 advanced renewable fuel projects.

Don’t Mess with the RFS

Don’t Mess with the RFS

Posted 6 February 2013 in

National

Last year may have been a challenging one, but the ethanol industry continued to bolster America’s economy and fuel supply to the tune of more than 13 billion gallons of renewable fuel and $43 billion in GDP.

The Renewable Fuels Association released the new economic data today, including findings that the industry employed or supported jobs for more than 300,000 Americans. That translates into $30 billion in household income for American workers.

That’s why it’s so important to protect the RFS, the policy that supports continued growth and job – and the industry is ready to go to the mat to defend the policy against opponents like the oil lobby. That’s the message Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen delivered today in his State of the Industry speech:

“Big Oil, represented by the American Petroleum Institute, has declared war on the RFS. They’ve been joined by Big Food, the angry birds, mad cows and hungry hogs. Together, they want to feed once more at the trough of low corn prices and government subsidies. They are putting their profits over the nation’s security. They will not succeed. But it will be an epic fight. And our mantra must be, ‘Don’t mess with the RFS!’”

Despite challenges and detractors, supporters of renewable fuel are ready to defend the policy that will ensure we all have choices at the pump, lower gas prices and a cleaner environment.

EPA Releases 2013 Volumetric Targets for the Renewable Fuel Standard

EPA Releases 2013 Volumetric Targets for the Renewable Fuel Standard

Posted 31 January 2013 in

National

The following is our statement on the release of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 volumetric standards for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS):

The Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) was designed from the start to have ambitious targets to drive investment, innovation and ultimate commercialization of renewable fuels, including cellulosic.

The policy is working: cellulosic biofuels are being produced now and millions of gallons of cellulosic fuel are expected to come online in the next two years. With the release of EPA’s 2013 RFS volumes, cellulosic innovators and producers around the country are continuing to work towards these targets.

The companies and projects planned and in progress around the country represent innovation, new technologies and continued investment in domestic, clean fuel production here in the U.S. The renewable fuel industry is at a turning point in bringing these fuels to the market, and it’s important to realize that the RFS has the flexibility to allow for compliance as the industry increases production.

The potential is there and is already becoming a reality; we must continue to protect the policies that support continued investment in the industry.

Our Response to API’s E15 Report

Our Response to API’s E15 Report

Posted 29 January 2013 in

National

Big Oil unveiled a new report today, filled with misleading claims and half-truths about one of our favorite renewable fuels: E15. Our response:

Today’s report from oil-lobby backed research group Coordinating Research Council displays clear bias and ignores millions of miles and years of testing that went into EPA’s approval of E15.

CRC’s bias is clear – API is a “sustaining member” of the group – and so it’s no surprise that the CRC is negative about E15. They’re playing right in to API’s misguided ploy to overturn the Renewable Fuel Standard.

Over 6.5 million miles of testing, equivalent to 12 round trips to the moon, makes E15 the most tested fuel, ever.

The CRC study by contrast doesn’t reflect a single mile driven, but rather, car components tested in isolation. By researchers’ own admission, testing also included an “aggressive” E15 blend that includes more water and acid than what consumers would use in their cars. Meanwhile, auto makers like Ford and GM have approved E15 for use in their new vehicles and some of the world’s most demanding cars and drivers at NASCAR use ethanol exclusively. This is a fuel that works and is already in use.

The oil industry is intent on maintaining its control over America’s fuel supply, and this kind of biased research is exactly why we must continue to protect the Renewable Fuel Standard and the investment it has supported. Luckily Congress had the foresight to create the Renewable Fuel Standard to ensure that drivers have access choices with renewable fuel at the pump.

Setting the Record Straight: Guatemala & NYT

Setting the Record Straight: Guatemala & NYT

Posted 10 January 2013 in

National

Yesterday, Tom Philpott at Mother Jones blogged about a recent piece in the New York Times that seeks to blame US renewable fuel policy for hunger issues in Guatemala, recycling a number of the same misleading claims we’ve heard from Big Oil and Big Food time and time again.

The Renewable Fuel Association has already put together a great takedown of the New York Times article, but we’d like to take this opportunity to make sure four key points come through in this debate:

  1. There are several types of corn, and the type most commonly used to make ethanol is No. 2 yellow corn (the same type of corn used by the meat industry to feed cows, chickens, etc. in factory farms). Meanwhile, the corn used to make tortillas is white corn. Yellow and white corn are two very different products with different markets, price drivers and end users. In a way, the foundation of the article is based on comparing apples to oranges.
  2. The New York Times article relies on an outdated yet oft-used statistic that says 40% of America’s corn goes to ethanol production. That stat excludes the 1/3 of field corn harvested that returns to the food system in the form of DDGS or dried-distillers grain solubles, a nutritious alternative to straight corn feed. The 40% number has been propagated by the grocery manufacturers and meat industry to prop up their claim that renewable fuel policies are increasing their cost of doing business.

  3. As for what corn is grown in Guatemala – the issue here lies more in international trade, food aid and national policies rather than ethanol. Subsidies, tariffs, market prices, land prices, etc. all play important roles in agriculture and far outweigh the influence of US biofuels in this instance. The New York Times rightly pointed out that subsidized corn flowed south in the 90s. From an international development perspective, this is a poor outcome given the impacts on local farmers. However, the biofuels policy did not start to take effect until 2005. In the meantime, USDA data shows that the percentage of Guatemalan maize consumption comprised by imports has been steady since 2000 (even as total consumption increased 3% from 2004 to 2009). In fact, imports have fallen in the past year.

  4. Why have imports fallen? Probably because Guatemala is a member of CAFTA and places a 10% tariff rate on corn and other grains, dissuading imports. And it’s helped encourage local corn farmers. According to the USDA, Guatemalans harvested 850,000 hectares of corn in 2012, the 2nd highest level in history. Over the past five years (remember, CAFTA was enacted in 2004… 8 years ago), harvested corn acres have been 32% higher on average than in the preceding 10 years.

The hunger problems that are plaguing developing nations all over the world are far more closely tied to macro- and micro-economic trends, commodities markets, international trade agreements, governmental and NGO aid packages, and even the price of oil than they are to a single U.S. industry or crop. We can only hope that in the future media outlets like the New York Times and Mother Jones will consider these important facts before rushing to smear the industries and policies that are helping the United States reduce its dependence on foreign fossil fuels.
