Thom Tillis Wins North Carolina Senate Primary

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Bullet: dodged. North Carolina speaker of the house Thom Tillis cruised to victory in Tuesday’s North Carolina Republican Senate primary, setting up a general election showdown with Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) this fall. Democrats had held on to hopes that Tillis, who was endorsed at the last minute by Mitt Romney, would fall short of the 40-percent threshold needed to win the race outright and head into a runoff with Greg Brannon, a far-out tea party doctor backed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.)

In another election year, Tillis would have been branded the conservative crusader. As the leader of an unpopular state legislature that shifted hard to the right in 2013, Tillis sparked a protest movement and national outrage over his steep budget cuts to social services and harsh restrictions on abortions. In 2011, he told a crowd he planned to “divide and conquer” people who received government assistance and subject them to drug tests. The state’s voter ID law, passed with Tillis’ support, is among the nation’s strictest. The legislature even banned state scientists from calculating sea level rise—just in case.

But Tillis struggled for months to win over the Republican base. At one point, tea party activists leaked audio of an angry Tillis chewing out conservative activists for having the gall to suggest that he was not wearing his “big boy pants.” But while North Carolina conservatives seemed to be clamoring for a better choice, they never settled on an alternative. When Reps. Renee Ellmers and Virginia Foxx decided to sit it out, the best they could come up with was Brannon, an OB-GYN who runs a chain of crisis pregnancy centers in the state and picked up the endorsement, in October, of Paul.

But Brannon was a singularly flawed candidate (even the insurgent-friendly Senate Conservatives Fund sat this one out), which might explain why Paul never came to visit until this Monday. He endorsed the right of a state to nullify federal laws he doesn’t agree with and spoke at a rally co-sponsored by a pro-secession organization, the League of the South. He called food stamps “slavery” and pledged to get rid of the Department of Agriculture. He dabbled in 9/11 trutherism. He floated a novel theory that Planned Parenthood is trying to kill newborns. He dismissed public education as a Marxist plot that “does nothing but dehumanize” kids. When a Huffington Post headline featured a “GOP Candidate:” story anytime in the last seven months, there was a fifty-percent chance that candidate was Brannon.

So it’s not surprising that he lost and Tillis won. What’s surprising is that anyone—especially an aspiring presidential candidate with dreams of making nice with big-time donors—thought fit to elevate Brannon in the first place.

Rand Paul Doubles Down on Support for GOP Senate Candidate Who Rallied With Secessionists

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

On Monday, Mother Jones profiled North Carolina Senate hopeful Greg Brannon—a Republican primary candidate who believes public education is dehumanizing and Marxist, and who recently cosponsored a rally with a secessionist group, the League of the South, which seeks “a free and independent Southern republic.” Brannon feels bipartisan compromises in Washington “enslave” Americans. He prefers the governing style of his “modern hero” Jesse Helms—a North Carolina senator of 30 years best known for refusing, even until the day he died in 2008, to renounce his support for racial segregation.

Sen. Rand Paul, among other big-name conservatives, has endorsed Brannon as the best candidate to challenge vulnerable Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan next fall. And while Paul’s office didn’t respond to requests for comment for that profile, a photo posted on Paul’s Facebook page Monday evening reiterated Paul’s support for Brannon and his campaign.

“Greg Brannon is the type of 100% fight to repeal ObamaCare conservative I need in the U.S. Senate,” read the caption, under a composite photograph that showed a smiling Paul next to Brannon. “Support his ‘Retreat is NOT an Option Money Bomb’ by clicking the link below.” The caption linked to a page on Brannon’s website where supporters could donate to Brannon’s ten-day “Money Bomb” campaign. The fundraiser, which ended Monday night, aimed “to fight back against Karl Rove and the DC Insiders who are determined to silence grassroots conservatives,” a reference to Rove’s work for one of Brannon’s primary opponents.

In a recent survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, Brannon was the only Republican who beat Hagan in a head-to-head matchup. When PPP polled Republican primary voters on the four GOP candidates, North Carolina Speaker of the House Thom Tillis ran 9 points ahead of Brannon—but nearly half of those voters said they were undecided.

Methane Gas from Landfill Fuels Arts Complex

The blacksmith shop at Jackson County Green Energy Park in North Carolina is the only one in the world fueled by landfill gas. Photo: Jackson County Green Energy Park

The commissioners of Jackson County in North Carolina knew they needed to do something about the growing levels of methane gas within the nine-acre landfill in Dillsboro. The landfill had closed in 1999, with roughly 750,000 tons of trash enclosed, and the buildup of methane gas had the potential of leaching into the soil and contaminating the water supply.

Although an environmental firm advised them to flare it off, which would allow them to burn off the flammable gas, the commissioners had a different plan.

“The county manager came to me because he knew I had a background in renewable energy,” explains Timm Muth, project director for the Jackson County Green Energy Park. “There was enough [gas] there to [power] a community project, so I suggested they put in art studios and use it to heat buildings.”

Knowing that methane gas can be used for heating in the same way as propane and natural gas, Muth helped create Green Energy Park, which has not only provided an environmentally friendly use for the gas, but has also helped revitalize the entire area.

Although he had moved to Jackson County to retire and become a professional mountain bike guide, Muth knew that his skills would add value to the project — so he re-entered the work force. “This is a tourist-driven economy, and I knew if we could do something that promoted our local artists, we would have a win-win situation,” Muth says. “Methane is more than 20 times worse than CO2 in terms of greenhouse gas effects, and for us it has provided a cost-free fuel.”

Today, the methane gas from the landfill provides power to a blacksmithing shop, a glass studio, a ceramics kiln and an art gallery. The park also is home to greenhouses, which the county uses to grow plants, and a sculpture garden that features works by local artists.
