Donald Trump Has a Brilliant Media Strategy

Like everyone, I’m often snarky about Donald Trump’s social media addiction, but I have to admit it works wonders. Today’s two tiny tidbits about Israel and our nuclear arsenal produced these top-of-the-site headlines from the New York Times (left) and the Washington Post (right):

Trump’s press strategy since the election has had two parts. Part one: refuse to talk to the press, so they’re starved for news. Part two: dribble out tiny, often ambiguous tweets once or twice a day on subjects of his choosing. This guarantees that he gets precisely the headlines he wants.

If he announced these things at a press conference, he’d have to take questions, and there’s no telling where that would lead. If he gave a speech, the press would highlight whichever parts it felt like. But by tweeting, he leaves reporters no choice. It’s the only presidential news they’ve got, and it’s on one specific subject, so that’s what they have to write about.

Pretty smart, isn’t it?

Raw Data: Where the Poor Are

Earlier today Matt Yglesias put up a map from the Census Bureau showing median incomes by county. He used it to make the point that the Midwest “Rust Belt” isn’t actually all that poor. I don’t have any complementary point to make, but I thought the map was interesting to look at. I’ve recolored it so that the poorest counties are shown in hot pink, which makes them easier to see.

Raw Data: The US Trade Deficit

Mother Jones

I don’t have any special reason to post this except for the fact that trade is very much in the news following Donald Trump’s election victory. For the record, then, here’s the US trade deficit since 1980:

And just for extra fun, here’s the same chart excluding trade with China and imports of crude oil:

The main lesson here is that the US trade deficit hasn’t been spiraling out of control for the past decade. It’s been declining. And practically all of it for the past five years has been accounted for by oil and China.

Today’s Experiment: Crowdsourcing a Blog Post

Over the weekend I was diddling around with some charts because that’s apparently what I do now when I’m trying to take my mind off Donald Trump. Here’s one I did that never made it into a post because it didn’t seem to show anything interesting:

So let’s crowdsource this post. What’s interesting or unexpected about this chart? Anything? There sure is a big drop in the number of people getting education degrees.

I got lucky this week and managed to snap this gorgeous portrait of Hopper. Today, however, everyone is inside. The wind is blowing pretty hard, and it took the cats less than a minute to decide that the backyard was much too scary for them. Leaves blowing! Branches thwacking on the patio cover! Loud whooshing sounds! Much better to snooze inside next to a window, where cruel nature can be seen but not heard.

Raw Data: How Big Is the Cloud Computing Market?

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

I don’t know why this popped into my head, but given the enormous growth of cloud computing I got curious about how big a share it is of all computing. Roughly speaking, it turns out that total spending in 2016 is:

Cloud computing: $38 billion
All computing:1 $1.5 trillion

So cloud computing currently accounts for about 2.5 percent of all IT hardware and software spending. I have no point to make about this.

1Hardware and software only, not including telecom spending. CompTIA estimates that non-telecom spending is about $2.24 trillion in 2016 and that hardware and software account for about two-thirds of that.

When I got home from lunch this afternoon, I switched on my tablet to see if anything had happened while I was away. I got this:

If you see a reference to “Spirit Cooking” anywhere, this is what it’s all about. Apparently conservatives have lost whatever few marbles they had left.

Louis C.K. Just Gave The Most Perfect Rant About Liberals Who Are Refusing to Vote For Hillary

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

When it comes to voting, comedian Louis C.K. minces no words. “I don’t have any quarrel with somebody who votes for Trump if that’s what they feel they want,” C.K. told Conan O’Brien last night, “but if you’re a liberal who’s not going to vote, you’re a piece of shit.”

C.K. went on to criticize liberals who weren’t going to vote because they didn’t know how they felt about Hillary Clinton or because they didn’t like her voice. “Grow the fuck up! Are you kidding me?” He railed. “If you vote for Hillary, you’re a grown up, if you vote for Trump, you’re a sucker, if you don’t vote for anybody, you’re an asshole.” Watch the full clip above.
