Did you know that the ethanol industry created 87,000 jobs last year? Or that American families saved about $1,200 dollars on gas in recent years because of ethanol? The Renewable Fuels Association has all of the facts about ethanol in a new video out today:

These are some of our favorite ethanol facts:

Today, ethanol makes up 10% of the U.S. gasoline supply. That’s up from less than 1% just 20 years ago.
Oil imports from OPEC are down 22% since the Renewable Fuel Standard was expanded in 2007.
Ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 40-50% when compared directly to gasoline.

If you’d like to learn more, RFA’s website has the full list of 40 ethanol facts, as well as sources for each.

Today, DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman spoke at the 2013 Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Energy Innovation Summit, explaining that cooperation between government and the private sector, as well as innovative science, is the key to developing new sources of energy and finding alternatives to oil.

Kullman went on to say that the production of renewable fuel, encouraged by the Renewable Fuel Standard, is a perfect example of such collaboration:

Good government policy is critical and supports technology development and early manufacturing until the new technology is mature enough to stand on its own. There is no better illustration of this than the Renewable Fuel Standard. The RFS has succeeded in doing what Congress intended it to do. Continued policy stability will ensure continued progress – meaning renewable fuels technologies developed and optimized to reach the scale and maturity needed to permanently impact American energy security and consumer choice.

We applaud President Obama’s commitment to getting America off oil

We applaud President Obama’s commitment to getting America off oil

Posted 13 February 2013 in

National

Tonight, President Obama laid out an agenda that includes cutting our dependence on oil, fighting climate change and creating jobs. The current administration has been a long-time supporter of renewable fuel, which can help meet all three of these goals.

The Renewable Fuel Standard is an essential policy that is already helping to wean us from oil and that, if left intact, can do even more to benefit America. The RFS has been crucial in encouraging investment in oil alternatives, driving innovation in advanced biofuels and opening up markets so that Americans have a choice at the gas pump.

Last year, 13 billion gallons of renewable fuel were added to our fuel supply. That production supported jobs for and employed more than 380,000 Americans while reducing the need for imported oil by more than 462 million barrels. A secure, domestic and clean fuel source, renewable fuel increasingly shields our country from volatile global oil markets, lowers gas prices – by $1.09 per gallon on average in recent years – and reduces harmful emissions that contribute to climate change. In 2012, using renewable fuel slashed greenhouse gas emissions by 33.4 million metric tons.

Renewable fuel has an important role to play in supporting President Obama’s energy agenda and job-creation goals. The companies of the renewable fuel sector stand ready to help make those goals a reality.

USDA Report: Climate Change Threatens Agriculture

USDA Report: Climate Change Threatens Agriculture

Posted 12 February 2013 in

National

The USDA has issued a new report which concludes that rising global temperatures will have acute, negative effects on US agriculture, including decreased crop yields and tremendous costs to farmers in the form of new pests and weeds.

Renewable fuel is working, right now, to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to changing climate patterns and threaten agriculture. Last year, renewable fuel use slashed GHG emissions from vehicles on America’s roads by 33 million metric tons.

Here’s what you need to know from USDA:

The climate is changing because of fossil fuel emissions, including those from oil:

Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and a variety of agricultural practices and industrial processes are rapidly increasing the atmospheric concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. These changes in atmospheric composition are increasing temperatures, altering the timing and distribution of precipitation, and affecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems (p. 23).

Climate change will cause more droughts at home and around the globe:

Climate change projections into the future suggest an increased variability of temperature and precipitation…[and] emerging patterns project increased incidence of areas experiencing droughts and periods of more intense precipitation (p. 5).

Rising temperatures will affect food production in the US and hunger globally:

Crops … will be affected by increased exposure to extreme temperature events and increased risk of exceeding the maximum temperature thresholds, potentially leading to catastrophic losses (p. 6).

Livestock production in the US will also be impacted:

Changing climatic conditions affect animal agriculture in four primary ways: (1) feed-grain production, availability and price; (2) pastures and forage crop production and quality; (3) animal health, growth and reproduction; and (4) disease and pest distributions (p. 4).

Don’t Mess with the RFS

Don’t Mess with the RFS

Posted 6 February 2013 in

National

Last year may have been a challenging one, but the ethanol industry continued to bolster America’s economy and fuel supply to the tune of more than 13 billion gallons of renewable fuel and $43 billion in GDP.

The Renewable Fuels Association released the new economic data today, including findings that the industry employed or supported jobs for more than 300,000 Americans. That translates into $30 billion in household income for American workers.

That’s why it’s so important to protect the RFS, the policy that supports continued growth and job – and the industry is ready to go to the mat to defend the policy against opponents like the oil lobby. That’s the message Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen delivered today in his State of the Industry speech:

“Big Oil, represented by the American Petroleum Institute, has declared war on the RFS. They’ve been joined by Big Food, the angry birds, mad cows and hungry hogs. Together, they want to feed once more at the trough of low corn prices and government subsidies. They are putting their profits over the nation’s security. They will not succeed. But it will be an epic fight. And our mantra must be, ‘Don’t mess with the RFS!’”

Despite challenges and detractors, supporters of renewable fuel are ready to defend the policy that will ensure we all have choices at the pump, lower gas prices and a cleaner environment.

The week may be over, but February’s just begun! Here are this week’s top stories in renewable fuel:

The Associated Press covers the exciting progress the renewable fuel industry has made toward commercial production of fuels made from plant residue, wood scraps or garbage.
A piece in AOL Energy debunks five myths about renewable fuel.
Jeff Lautt, CEO of POET, writes an op-ed in The Argus Leader on the real truths about ethanol.
The oil lobby released a new study, falsely claiming that 15 percent ethanol blends damage car engines, and the Renewable Fuels Association offered a detailed rebuttal.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota’s BioTechnology Institute have “developed a technique to ‘trick’ common iron-eating bacteria into capturing electrons” as part of a process to create renewable fuel.

That’s all for now – have a happy Friday!

Somehow, the renewable sector in Sicily was infiltrated by the Mob

Somehow, the renewable sector in Sicily was infiltrated by the Mob

If you look at it in one way, this is pretty good news. After all, if renewable energy weren’t a growing market with potential for profit, why would the Mob have any interest in it? From the Washington Post:

The still-emerging links of the mafia to the once-booming wind and solar sector here are raising fresh questions about the use of government subsidies to fuel a shift toward cleaner energies, with critics claiming huge state incentives created excessive profits for companies and a market bubble ripe for fraud. China-based Suntech, the world’s largest solar panel maker, last month said it would need to restate more than two years of financial results because of allegedly fake capital put up to finance new plants in Italy. The discoveries here also follow so-called “eco-corruption” cases in Spain, where a number of companies stand accused of illegally tapping state aid.

Because it receives more sun and wind than any other part of Italy, Sicily became one of Europe’s most obvious hotbeds for renewable energies over the past decade. As the Italian government began offering billions of euros annually in subsidies for wind and solar development, the potential profitability of such projects also soared — a fact that did not go unnoticed by Sicily’s infamous crime families.

Wikipedia

Would you buy a solar installation from this man?

Unsuprisingly, the discovery of deep Mafia infiltration in a heavily-subsidized industry prompted the government to step in.

Roughly a third of the island’s 30 wind farms — along with several solar power plants — have been seized by authorities. Officials have frozen more than $2 billion in assets and arrested a dozen alleged crime bosses; corrupt local councilors and mafia-linked entrepreneurs. Italian prosecutors are now investigating suspected mafia involvement in renewable energy projects from Sardinia to Apulia.

My initial optimism aside, this is clearly bad news for the sector in Italy. In 2011, Italy led the world in new solar capacity and was fourth in overall renewable investment, according to the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century [PDF]. 2013 will almost certainly be less successful.

It does, however, provide inspiration for the script I’ve been developing, working title: Godfather IV. The only line I have so far is, “Leave the solar panel; take the cannoli.” But I think it shows promise.
