Watch John Oliver Explain the Insanity of Our Student Debt Crisis

Mother Jones

The price of attending college in America continues to spiral out of control. In 2012, the average cost of attending a 4-year undergraduate institution in the US hit a record $23,872, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. For comparison, 35% of American workers made less than $22,500 in 2012.

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, liberal piñata-destroyer John Oliver took on this insanity with a typically entertaining and blood boiling segment. “Essentially, student debt is like HPV. If you go to college, you’re almost certainly going to get it, and if you do, it will follow you for the rest of your life.”

Watch:

For more, here are 9 charts about the student debt crisis that will drive you crazy.

Iowa GOP Official Warns That Child Migrants Might Be Highly Trained “Warriors”

Mother Jones

Iowa Republican National Committee member Tamara Scott has a special theory about the flood of child migrants entering the United States: What if they’re secretly ninjas?

Republican congressmen have previously argued that the 70,000 youths who will come across the border in 2014 are being brought over to bolster Democratic voter rolls at some point in the distant future, or that they are carrying a deadly disease that does not actually exist in their home countries. Scott, in a Thursday radio segment flagged by Right Wing Watch, sought to outdo them all:

For us just to open our borders it’s chaos we don’t know orderly who’s coming in, who’s not. When we see these kids, you and I think young kids, we think maybe 12-year-olds, maybe even…middle-schoolers. But we know back in our revolution, we had 12-year-olds fighting in our revolution. And for many of these kids, depending on where they’re coming from, they could be coming from other countries and be highly trained as warriors who will meet up with their group here and actually rise up against us as Americans. We have no idea what’s coming through our borders, but I would say biblically it’s not a Christian nation when you entice people to do wrong.

This is a terrible idea for a Red Dawn sequel.

Let’s Watch Stephen Colbert Make Fun Of Tim Draper’s Stupid Plan To Split California Into 6 States

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

In 2016, Californians will vote on stupid Tim Draper’s stupid initiative to turn America’s greatest state into six stupid (and deeply unequal) little states. The initiative will fail, and even if it somehow passes, the state legislature will never approve it, and even if it somehow did, Congress will never agree to it. So, this whole thing is stupid. Fitting then that famed ridiculer of stupid things Stephen Colbert had Draper on his show last night.

Colbert began by introducing Draper (a “Silicon Valley billionaire and evil stepdad in a Lifetime movie”) and his stupid plan to the uninitiated:

Then “the riskmaster” himself came on. Watching Draper come off like a weirdo is entertaining enough, but the real money shot is when Colbert responds to Draper’s promise that he has no future in politics: “so, you’re just going to set the charges, blow it apart, and then say ‘not my fucking problem’?”

On Friday afternoon, President Barack Obama demanded that Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine adhere to a cease fire, and he slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin for not keeping his vow to de-escalate in the Ukraine and for continuing to provide weapons and training to the rebels. Obama confirmed media reports noting that US intelligence has determined that a missile fired from the rebel-held area downed the Malaysian Airlines passenger plane, killing over 300 people. Obama announced that one US citizen was on the flight. Watch the speech here:

Obama: "The Affordable Care Act Is Here to Stay"

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

On Tuesday afternoon, President Barack Obama announced in a speech at the White House that more Americans than predicted had signed up for health coverage through the insurance exchanges during the first six months of enrollment. “7.1 million Americans have now signed up for private insurance plans through these marketplaces,” the president said. “Seven point one. Yep.” And Obama slammed Republicans who haven’t let up trying to gut the law. “This law is doing what it’s supposed to do,” he said. “It’s helping people from coast to coast, all of which makes the lengths to which critics have gone to scare people or undermine the law or try to repeal the law without offering any plausible alternative so hard to understand…. The debate over repealing this law is over,” Obama added. “The Affordable Care Act is here to stay.” Watch:

New Report Suggests Wedding Procession Drone Strike May Have Violated Laws of War

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

A new report from Human Rights Watch outlines conflicting accounts surrounding a drone strike on a Yemeni wedding convoy that killed 12 people and injured at least 15 others.

While the US government has not officially acknowledged any role in the December 12, 2013 attack, anonymous officials later told the AP that the operation targeted Shawqi Ali Ahmad al-Badani, an Al Qaeda leader, and maintained that the dead were militants.

But after interviewing witnesses and relatives of the dead and wounded, Human Rights Watch determined that the 11 cars were in a wedding procession. Although the organization concedes the convoy may have included members of Al Qaeda, the report concluded that there is evidence suggesting “that some, if not all those killed and wounded were civilians.”

The report, titled “A Wedding That Became a Funeral,” has renewed calls for the Obama administration to carry out a transparent, impartial investigation into the incident—and to explain how such a strike is consistent with both international laws of war and Obama’s own rules governing drone strikes. Announced last May, the procedures limit the use of drones to targeting those who pose a continuing, imminent threat to the United States, where capture is not feasible, and there is a “near certainty” of no civilian casualties.

The report suggests the strike may have violated the laws of war by “failing to discriminate between combatants and civilians, or by causing civilian loss disproportionate to the expected military advantage.”

Watchdog Group Banned from YouTube After Anti-Gay Chaplain Complains About YouTube Comments

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

On Thursday afternoon, Right Wing Watch, an offshoot of the progressive group People for the American Way that monitors the public statements of prominent figures on the religious right, had its YouTube account suspended at the request of an anti-gay former Navy chaplain who is running for a seat in the Colorado legislature. Gordon Klingenschmitt, who left the Navy in 2006 and has had a second career as an evangelical activist, sent out a triumphant press release heralding the news under the tag “David takes down Goliath.” YouTube told Right Wing Watch it was being suspended because it had violated Klingenschmitt’s copyright, but the chaplain’s statement suggests he had another motive for filing the complaint: Right Wing Watch had done nothing to stop threats on his life from its “followers”:

Three of those posts, still active on YouTube as of 16 Aug, call upon RWW’s followers to kill Chaplain Klingenschmitt:
1. can we murder this fu**
2. I don’t think he’s a fetus. So yeah, you could murder him and still be pro-life.
3. Another white a** cracker pu*** that needs a .45 Caliber renovation.

Three other followers of RWW stated they wished the Chaplain would die, or had been murdered by an abortionist, or praised the demon of murder.
4. What a pathetic little bi***. Can’t wail till these people die out.
5. Don’t diss the “deamon of murder”, I’ve met him. He’s not a bad guy.
6. This guy is a sh** person and would have been better if he was aborted.

In a blog post, Brian Tashman, a writer and researcher for the Right Wing Watch, confirmed the cancelation of the group’s YouTube account and said Right Wing Watch had filed an appeal.

The catch is that the threats against Klingenschmitt weren’t made by anyone affiliated with Right Wing Watch—they were made by YouTube commenters. Given the often viral nature of Right Wing Watch‘s videos, and the often volatile nature of YouTube’s commenters, crazy comments seemed almost inevitable. I asked Klingenschmitt if this meant that he was responsible for the YouTube comments on his own site. “When I become aware of something or it’s brought to my attention, I will delete things that are inflammatory,” he said. “I’m not responsible for the initial posting but if I am alerted and don’t do anything, I am responsible.”

It’s not hard to see why Klingenschmitt, who kicked off his first political campaign in October, wouldn’t want Right Wing Watch‘s videos online. He told Colorado activist Will Perkins* that if gays are allowed to marry, “then they would be able to adopt the children of heterosexuals and therefore that increases their ability to recruit.” He described the message of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit discrimination against LGBT citizens, thusly: “The Government is now ordering you: Forsake God or starve to death.” And he suggested that demonic spirits were controlling President Obama—and Madonna.

But Klingenschmitt isn’t the first conservative to ask Right Wing Watch to take down a video, and the previous cases suggest his victory will be a short-lived. In September, YouTube denied a request from Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network to take down a clip of the influential evangelical pastor suggesting that gay people wear special knife-rings that transmit AIDS to random people they meet.

*This post originally misidentified Klingenschmitt’s guest.
