A few of you have written to ask if we plan to get another cat. The answer is probably yes, but not immediately. And what does “not immediately” mean? There’s no telling. A new cat could walk into our lives tomorrow, or it might take a little while longer. We’ll see.

In the meantime, my mother’s cats continue to be perky and photogenic, and ever since she learned how easy it is to take pictures with her iPad and email them directly to me, I’ve been getting more photos of her brood. Below you can see the latest. Mozart has pretty plainly settled in to alpha cat status, and Ditto just as plainly isn’t quite sure he’s happy about that. But it’s too late. Ditto has the bulk, but I think Mozart has whatever indefinable feline quality it is that makes him boss. It’s his house now.

A Wee Question About That Residual Force Everyone Keeps Blathering About

Here’s something I don’t get. Republicans seem to universally hold the following two opinions about Iraq and ISIS:

  1. President Obama is to blame for the military success of ISIS because he declined to keep a residual force in Iraq after 2011.
  2. In the fight against ISIS, we certainly don’t want to send in combat troops. No no no.

“Residual force” has become something of a talisman for conservative critics of Obama’s Iraq policy. It’s sort of like “providing arms,” the all-purpose suggestion for every conflict from hawks who know the public won’t stand for sending in ground troops but who want to support something more muscular than sanctions. It’s a wonderful sound bite because it sounds sensible and informed as long as you don’t think too hard about it (what arms? for whom? is anyone trained to use them? etc.). Luckily, most people don’t think too hard about it.

“Residual force” sounds good too. But if we don’t want boots on the ground in the fight against ISIS, what exactly would it have done? Hang around Baghdad to buck up the morale of the Iraqi forces that came fleeing back after encountering ISIS forces? Conduct ever more “training”? Or what? Can someone tell me just what everyone thinks this magical residual force would have accomplished?

I didn’t actually get around to hauling out my camera for Monday’s supermoon (how many of these things do we get every year, anyway?), but I did snap a few pictures on Sunday. So in the spirit of better late than never, here’s one of them. The clouds and the colors were kind of interesting, even if the picture itself is so-so.

Obama’s Iraq Speech: Light on Substance, and Maybe That’s a Good Thing

Well, that was pretty anticlimactic. Here is President Obama’s shiny new plan for defeating ISIS:

  1. More airstrikes, including strikes in Syria.
  2. A few hundred advisors to work with Iraqi troops. They will provide training, equipment, and intelligence.
  3. Counterterrorism to prevent ISIS attacks.
  4. Humanitarian aid.

We are, presumably, already engaged in #3 and #4. We’re partially engaged in #1. Basically, then Obama is proposing to (a) expand the air war and (b) provide more aid to the Iraqi army. That’s really not an awful lot—which is fine with me.

Will this work? Airstrikes by themselves are obviously limited in what they can accomplish. They can frustrate ISIS plans in specific areas, but they can’t do a lot more than that. As we’ve known all along, real success depends on the Iraqi military. Unfortunately, given the fact that we spent years training Iraqi forces and ended up with an army that cut and run at the first sight of ISIS forces, I have my doubts that further training will really do that much good. But if it doesn’t, there’s little we can do anyway. So it’s probably our only option.

The big question, of course, is whether our assistance will stay limited. If the Iraqi military fails, as it may, will we start pouring in more troops? Obama was clear on this: “We will not get dragged into another ground war in Iraq.” Still, sometimes events run away with things, and I’m not sure what’s going to prevent a slow accretion of more and more US forces aside from Obama’s personal convictions. This is a thinner reed than I’d like even if I believe that he’s entirely sincere in his desire to avoid escalation. We’ll just have to wait and see.

In any case, that’s really all we got tonight. I’d like to write something longer and more insightful, but there just weren’t enough specifics in the speech to justify that. The last third of the speech was mostly platitudes about partners, chairing a UN meeting, America is great, God bless the troops, etc. There wasn’t an awful lot there.

Let’s Not Give ISIS Exactly What They Want

Yesterday I wrote a post noting that a supposedly war-weary public had suddenly become awfully war happy. “All it took,” I said, “was a carefully stagecrafted beheading video and the usual gang of conservative jingoists to exploit it.” Here’s a Twitter conversation that followed (lightly edited for clarity):

DS: Think of what you wrote: “All it took was…beheading”? I opposed W’s but this is what wars are made from & I think rightly so.

Me: Really? So any group anywhere in the world merely needs to commit an atrocity to draw us into war?

DS: On what other basis should wars be fought if not to stop groups from committing atrocities against Americans?

I’m not trying to pick on anyone in particular here, but it’s pretty discouraging that this kind of attitude is so common. There’s no question that the beheading of American citizens by a gang of vicious thugs is the kind of thing that makes your blood boil. Unless you hail from Vulcan, your gut reaction is that you want to find the barbarians who did this and crush them.

But that shouldn’t be your final reaction. This is not an era of conventional military forces with overwhelming power and no real fear of blowback. It’s an era of stateless terrorists whose ability to commit extremely public atrocities is pretty much unlimited. And while atrocities can have multiple motivations, one of the key reasons for otherwise pointless actions like one-off kidnappings and beheadings is their ability to either provoke overreactions or successfully extort ransoms. Unfortunately, Americans are stupidly addicted to the former and Europeans seem to be stupidly addicted to the latter, and that’s part of what keeps this stuff going.

In any case, a moment’s thought should convince you that we’re being manipulated. We’ve read account after account about ISIS and its remarkably sophisticated command and publicity apparatus. The beheading video is part of that. It’s a very calculated, very deliberate attempt to get us to respond stupidly. It’s not even a very subtle manipulation. It’s just an especially brutal one.

So if we’re smart, we won’t give them what they want. Instead we’ll respond coldly and meticulously. We’ll fight on our terms, not theirs. We’ll intervene if and only if the Iraqi government demonstrates that it can take the lead and hold the ground they take. We’ll forego magical thinking about counterinsurgencies. We won’t commit Western troops in force because we know from experience that this doesn’t work. We’ll avoid pitched battles and instead take advantage of our chances when they arise. Time is on our side.

Above all, we won’t allow a small band of medieval theocrats to manipulate us. We need to stop giving them exactly what they want. We need to stop doing stupid stuff.

Images Rule Our World

One of the most famous anecdotes from the Reagan years comes from Lesley Stahl, then a reporter for the CBS Evening News. After airing a long, critical piece during the 1984 campaign, she got a cheerful call from Dick Darman at the White House. “We really loved it,” he said. “Five minutes of free media.” Dan Schill tells the rest of the story:

Stahl asked, “Why are you so happy? Didn’t you hear what I said?” Giving the punch line of the parable, Darman said to Stahl, “You guys in Televisionland haven’t figured it out, have you? When the pictures are powerful and emotional, they override if not completely drown out the sound. I mean it, Lesley. Nobody heard you.”

Stahl said she examined her piece again, this time with the sound off, and found that the Reagan official was right—her story had accepted the Reagan frame and was practically an unpaid political commercial—a brilliant montage of Reagan surrounded with flags, children, balloons, and cheering supporters.

Asked if this experience changed the way she produces her stories, Stahl said, “Not really. I’m still trapped, because my pieces are written to the pictures we have.”

I was reminded of this story once again yesterday when TMZ released elevator video of Ray Rice slugging his then fiancée and knocking her unconscious. It was a brutal attack and reaction was swift and uncompromising. Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens, the NFL suspended him indefinitely, and his sponsors began abandoning him almost immediately.

And yet, that video told us nothing. We already knew what had happened. Based on previous video, we knew that Rice had punched Janay Palmer hard enough to knock her out. We just didn’t have it on tape.

And it’s not only the NFL that reacted differently after the new video was released. Even the folks who criticized the league’s anemic response back in February are now far more outraged. The video affected everyone’s reaction.

Why? Is it the visceral effect of images? Does it have something to do with an instinct to avoid drawing the most damning conclusions until an image makes it impossible to evade the truth any longer? Or is it all a charade, and lots of people are just pretending to be more outraged because they know it’s now expected of them?

I don’t know. But the internet is now the domain of LOLcats, BuzzFeed listicles, and charts of the day—the latter for those of us who like images but also like to believe we’re too smart to be manipulated by them. The fastest growing social media sites are Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and others like it. Blogs are often so stuffed with YouTube videos that you can refill your coffee cup while you wait for them to load. Millions of formerly peaceable people—people who already knew perfectly well that ISIS was a barbarous bunch of thugs—suddenly want to go to war because we now have pictures of that barbarism. Images rule everywhere. It’s not just Lesley Stahl who’s trapped in Lesley Stahl’s world anymore. We all are.

Why the World Health Organization Doesn’t Have Enough Funds to Fight Ebola

With the Ebola virus continuing its spread throughout West Africa—and landing this week in a fifth country, Senegal—the custodians of global health are becoming more adamant that the world is not doing enough to stop the deadly pathogen. That is, the rich nations of the world are not providing sufficient resources for the fight against Ebola. World Health Organization leaders came to Washington last week to ask for $600 million to build and administer new treatment centers in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone—the three countries with the most infections—and provide safe burials for victims in those countries. This is essential, given that the killer virus spreads via bodily fluids, and many people have contracted the disease through contact with the bodies of dead Ebola victims.

Due to budget constraints, the WHO had only a limited presence in West Africa at the time of the outbreak and it failed to detect and contain the virus before it got out of control. These poor countries had to deal with the crisis on their own during the epidemic’s earliest stages. The WHO’s earlier budget cuts also caused the organization to lose some of the senior staff most qualified to lead a response.

Sean Rowe began his music career 10 years ago in his hometown of Troy, New York, playing covers in bars for a living. Now based in Woodstock, Rowe (rhymes with Tao) is still known for his emotive interpretations of other people’s songs at his live performances, which are as likely to happen at a private house concert as a club or festival stage.

Tomorrow, Rowe releases Madman, his third album on ANTI- records. The songs—while mixing elements of his early influences of soul, early rock, and slide-guitar blues—often feel more like incantations calling for deeper awareness, reflection, and personal connection. The video for Madman‘s title track is a good introduction into his world, a humble and unvarnished road diary of the people he meets, the living rooms he visits, and the walks he takes in the woods. I spoke with and photographed Rowe in Brooklyn. The following is in his words:

If I really sat and analyzed what it is I’m doing, I would be exhausted just thinking about it. Because it’s a lot. Sometimes I want to tour everywhere and just perform and that’s all I want to do, and then I remember, “Oh yeah, I have a family and that’s the most important thing in the world to me, and I want to get that down right.” I love being a dad, I feel like I’m really good at that. But it requires a lot of energy to be a really good parent—being present, which I feel like I’m really struggling with, being away a lot. Balancing all that is just mad. That’s kind of where the song “Madman” came out of. I put a lot of myself into the record this time around.

And the city has a way just to make you forget,
about half the stuff you love and things you don’t know yet.

That was the first line. I sat on the song for four years. I had the line, and I had the chord progression, but it never finished itself. You gotta wait until it comes out. I realized after some time what the song was really about. The city life—I don’t think we’ve quite evolved to live that lifestyle. As exciting as it can be, and as great as the idea-sharing possibilities are, I don’t think physically we were made to walk on pavement and to be as absent-minded as the city can make you. It creates a certain mentality that is only good if you are dealing with the laws of modern society. It’s not really a universal feeling. I think it can be distracting; it can take you away from a real lasting sense of place.

When I was younger, I liked to think that I was leading some kind of esoteric existence, dreaming of being some kind of hermit or vagabond wandering into the woods to live off the land. But touring has showed me so many different kinds of lifestyles that are equally valid. People are people—some good, some bad. I don’t think that what I do is particularly virtuous other than I think it’s important to get in touch with your surroundings on a very basic level. Although there is spirituality in it for me, I think it is just a good practice to be aware of your neighbors, not just people, but plants and animals. It gives you a better feeling about everything. I think everybody can relate to that. I left my phone at the gig last night, and my wife and I were joking that it was God’s way of forcing me to be quiet for a little bit.

What I’m doing with the house concerts is about connecting with the fans in a direct way. House shows are pretty intense, just by the nature of the way they work. They aren’t open to the public. The people who contact me to do them are really big fans and they just have all their friends and their family come. Most of the people have never heard of you before and usually I’ve never met the hosts. And the first time they’re seeing me play is in their living room. It’s a pretty raw experience. It’s a beautiful thing, though. Music has a way of breaking down a lot of walls. It takes away the awkwardness pretty quickly and gets you in the door. One of the great things is really getting to know people, seeing what they do for a living, how they got to where they are. There’s a lot of humility in it. There’s really no pretense, there can’t be.

When I started out playing in bars it was primarily to pay the bills, because bars were the only places that would pay. That means having to play a lot of cover songs, because people want to hear what they already know. But I had always chosen the covers that I loved to play. I don’t have to play covers now, but I enjoy doing it, because if I can bring something different to it and keep the intent of the song intact, then I’ll do it. For example, I cover a song by Richard Thompson called “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” which is one of those songs that you really don’t touch. I think that I play it because I can keep the emotion alive that was intended.

Everything is up for grabs in songwriting, It doesn’t matter if you’re in the woods or a high-rise apartment, you have to be open to every kind of experience to be a good writer. My baseline lifestyle is centered on trying to live as naturally as possible. It just feels really good; it’s not the kind of thing you need to over-explain. I’ve learned not to force what I do onto other people, but for me it’s really exciting to get out there and harvest wild food and spend time in nature.

I don’t think about it too much when I’m in the process of writing. I’ll certainly try to wrap myself around the song as much as possible, but once the song is done, it has a way of becoming more than the sum of its parts. And then it just becomes the song as a whole entity. It’s like a comedian who knows something will be funny but he can’t really prove it yet; he can take something small and seemingly insignificant that he knows must be happening to everybody else, too. It’s a lot like that in songwriting, you just trust that this stuff happens to everybody.

Hillary Clinton Praises a Guy With Lots of Blood on His Hands

Hillary Clinton often plays the hawk card: She voted for the Iraq war, dissed President Barack Obama for not being tough enough on Syria, and compared Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler. This is to be expected from a politician who has angled for a certain title: the first female president of the United States. Whether her muscular views are sincerely held or not, a conventional political calculation would lead her to assume it may be difficult for many voters to elect as commander-in-chief a woman who did not project an aggressive and assertive stance on foreign policy. So her tough talk might be charitably evaluated in such a (somewhat) forgiving context. Yet what remains more puzzling and alarming is the big wet kiss she planted (rhetorically) on former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger this week, with a fawning review of his latest book, World Order.

Sure, perhaps there is secretary’s privilege—an old boy and girls club, in which the ex-foreign-policy chiefs do not speak ill of each other and try to help out the person presently in the post. Nothing wrong with that. But former-Madam Secretary Clinton had no obligation to praise Kissinger and publicly participate in his decades-long mission to rehabilitate his image. In the review, she calls Kissinger a “friend” and reports, “I relied on his counsel when I served as secretary of state. He checked in with me regularly, sharing astute observations about foreign leaders and sending me written reports on his travels.” She does add that she and Henry “have often seen the world and some of our challenges quite differently, and advocated different responses now and in the past.” But here’s the kicker: At the end of the review, she notes that Kissinger is “surprisingly idealistic”:

Even when there are tensions between our values and other objectives, America, he reminds us, succeeds by standing up for our values, not shirking them, and leads by engaging peoples and societies, the sources of legitimacy, not governments alone.

Kissinger reminds us that America succeeds by standing up for its values? Did she inhale?

Euro Area Economy Is Even Worse Than Ours
