GOP Senate Candidate Looks For Help From Radio Host Who Wants to Jail Gays

Mother Jones

Mississippi GOP Senate candidate Chris McDaniel appeared on a radio program on Monday hosted by a controversial social conservative activist who has called for gay people to be imprisoned and has said the “the spirit of the Antichrist is at work” in the Obama White House.

McDaniel, a state senator who is challenging incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran for the GOP nomination, has taken heat over the last week for past comments he made on his own radio show, “The Right Side,” which were reported by Mother Jones in January. The comments, recently picked up by the Wall Street Journal, featured a riff on the merits of using taxpayer funds to pay reparations to the descendants of slaves. “If they pass reparations, and my taxes are going up, I ain’t paying taxes,” the tea party favorite said in 2006. His appearance Monday on “Focal Point” with host Bryan Fischer, the issues director for the American Family Association, was an opportunity to clear the record.

“They’re desperate,” McDaniel told Fischer. “And when these politicians and the establishment in Washington feels threatened, they always react with desperation. I was a conservative talk radio host, actually it was a Christian conservative talk radio show for three and a half four years I hosted that. Two hours a day. And this is the best they’ve got? Most of it is way out of context anyway. They were talking about reparations, for example—let me be real clear, I’m against reparations. I don’t know why that’s a bad thing to say. Maybe Sen. Cochran’s for reparations? He should clarify that for us. But I’m against it. And some of the other things, we were just sitting there, no harm was meant.”

In other clips from “The Right Side,” McDaniel alleged that Democrats were plotting to make polygamy legal in all 50 states, and that Hollywood was whitewashing the evils of Islam. He mocked San Francisco “elites” by alleging a correlation between IQ and “gender misidentification,” and blamed an uptick of gun violence in Canada on hip-hop. Shootings, McDaniels claimed, are “a problem of a culture that values prison more than college; a culture that values rap and destruction of community values more than it does poetry; a culture that can’t stand education.”

But Fischer’s show is an unusual choice for a politician looking to launder his reputation as a conservative shock-jock. In March, Fischer told his listeners that while he didn’t think President Obama is the antichrist, “the spirit of the Antichrist is at work” in the Oval Office. He has said that people turn to homosexuality (which he’d like criminalized) when the Devil takes over their brains. He once called for a Sea World Orca whale to be Biblically stoned after it killed its trainer. He said the secretarial job in his office is “reserved for a woman because of the unique things that God has built into women.” Even some Republicans have distanced themselves from Fischer—at the 2011 Values Voters Summit in Washington, D.C., Mitt Romney condemned Fischer’s “poisonous language.”

McDaniel has received the backing of major Republican groups, including the Senate Conservatives Fund and Club for Growth, but still faces an uphill battle. An April survey from Harper Polling gave Cochran a double-digit edge over McDaniel, 52–35.

The September Jobs Report Is Glum, But October’s Might be Worse

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The US economy added 148,000 jobs in September, fewer than expected, according to new numbers from the Labor Department, which were released Tuesday—more than two weeks late due to the government shutdown. The jobless rate fell from 7.2 to 7.3 percent, but as in previous months, the drop in unemployment is mostly due to the fact that fewer people were seeking work last month, and thus were not officially counted as unemployed.

The percentage of Americans who are working remained unchanged, at only 58.6 percent, the lowest labor force participation rate since 1986. As economist Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research said Tuesday, “This continues the pattern that we have seen throughout the recovery as the unemployment rate falls mainly because workers leave the labor market. The unemployment rate is now down by 2.8 percentage points from its 10.0 peak in October of 2009. However, the employment rate is up just 0.4 percentage points from its low point hit in June of 2011.”

The unemployment rate for blacks and Hispanics remained disproportionately high. The jobless rate for African-Americans fell one percentage point in September to 12.9 percent; for Hispanics, the number dropped three percentage points to 9 percent.

The leisure and hospitality industry lost the most jobs since December 2009, a stark change from recent months which have seen gains in low-wage service sector jobs. Retail employment increased 20,800. Here’s a chart showing September gains and losses by sector, via Quartz:

There was some mildly positive data in the jobs report. Part-time employment dropped 594,000, suggesting that the surge in part-time employment earlier this year was an aberration. That’s good news for the Obama administration, which has been trying to convince Americans that Obamacare’s requirement that employers offer insurance to people who work more than 30 hours has not caused employers to cut hours.

In other lukewarm news, average hourly earnings increased three cents in September. And construction payrolls increased 20,000, which could ease some economists’ fears that home building was leveling off.

As the Times reports, the dual battles over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling likely worsened the employment situation, “because hundreds of thousands of federal workers and contractors were furloughed and also because anxiety and uncertainty over the budget battle caused consumer confidence to plummet.” But we won’t see those effects until next month’s jobs report. Economists estimate the shutdown cut about 0.6 of a percentage point off fourth-quarter GDP.

More shenanigans over the budget and debt ceiling this winter, not to mention a possible extension of the deep budget cuts known as sequestration, could dampen the economy further. “It’s clear that the conservatives’ long march to austerity spending cuts has sapped aggregate demand from the recovery,” says Adam Hersch, an economist at the liberal think thank, the Center for American Progress. The stagnant economy and Congressional spats have led economists to predict that the Federal Reserve will likely delay scaling back it’s stimulus program.

Hersch says the report is “a stark reminder that it’s time for Congress to focus on the real economic challenges facing ordinary Americans: jobs, incomes, and the public institutions critical to our economy.”

Behind the Saga to Bring a Giant RoboCop Statue to Detroit

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Detroit, Michigan, is finally getting its monument to RoboCop.

Last May, photos began circulating online of a giant statue made in honor of the legendary cyborg law enforcer. It’s the result of a Kickstarter campaign by the Imagination Station, a Detroit nonprofit specializing in art and renovation. Three months later, the statue has finally reached Detroit soil.

The model, assembled at Across the Board Creations in British Colombia, arrived Wednesday afternoon in a crate. “Slow and steady wins the race,” Brandon Walley, director of development at the Imagination Station, wrote me earlier this week. But the statue’s journey began long before this summer. The story of how this RoboCop duplicate came into being is a complex two-year saga involving Hollywood executives, political division, gonzo art—and the actual star of RoboCop.

The statue’s origin is, in fact, entirely political. In early 2011, the Democratic Mayor of Detroit and retired NBA Hall of Famer Dave Bing was promoting the Detroit Works Project, an initiative that called for community input to create a “strategic framework plan” for the city. He got the word out on Twitter, which earned him some thoughtful response—and the standard jest. One of the tweeted suggestions came from user @MT, who asked if the city would devote a chunk of its budget to erecting a statue to RoboCop, the eponymous protagonist from Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 action film, which is set in a futuristic, chaotic, and ruined Detroit. (For the uninitiated, the film RoboCop satirizes the excess and horrors of the Reagan era. The character and franchise has since become an American pop-culture icon. A 2014 remake is on the way.)

This is all Mayor Bing had to say about @MT’s modest proposal:

…which spurred further discussion on the matter:

Bing did not entertain the idea of building a fully functional killing machine, either.

Get Cheap Solar Panels By Building Them Yourself

Is installing residential photovoltaic panels in your home a wise long-lasting financial investment, or a money pit? If it actually will pay for itself, how long will that take? Exactly what will be the return on your financial investment?

This question is hard to respond to because there are a lot of various elements to consider, and no two individuals’s circumstance are alike. The variety of domestic solar panels, the amount of power your home uses, the expense of electrical power, geographic place, as well as season can all influence your return on investment. You’ll need to do the estimations yourself for your specific circumstance, and this short article will explain how.

Step One: Cost of Residential Solar Panels

Get a quote on how much your panels will cost (including installation). This can be a bit more difficult to compute if you plan to construct your own panels. Nonetheless, it’s much safer to over quote the costs to develop the panels than to under estimate.

For instance, let’s say you pay $3000 for a solar energy system, nonetheless, with a total solar energy system blueprint, such as from Earth4Energy, they’ve shown it’s possible to construct your very own economical solar panels for less than $200. This is the amount of cash the panels will need to save you before you break even. Money you conserve after that point is pure profit, a return on your financial investment.

Step Two: Subtract Tax Credit

The federal government grants home owners a tax credit for setting up residential solar panels that is equal to 30 % of the expense of the solar power system. If you build your very own inexpensive photovoltaic panels, keep the receipts and keep mindful records, simply in case of an audit.

Subtract the tax credit from the expense of your panels. If your panels cost you $3000, then 30 % of that would be $900.

Step Three: Estimate Daily Solar Electricity Generated

Next, you should know just how much electrical power your residential photovoltaic panels can generate daily. This number can differ from day to day relying on cloud cover, daylight hours, and geographic place, so you’ll have to get an typical number from the maker or distributor. You’ll have to approximate it yourself if you build your own Cheap Solar Panels. For the sake of example, let’s just state your home-built photovoltaic panels generate an average of 5 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical power each day.

Step Four: Cost of Electricity

Check your power costs and see just how much you pay per kWh of electrical power. Let’s state its $0.15 per kWh.

Step Five: Do the Math

Discover out how much you are minimizing your power expense per day by increasing the quantity of solar electricity generated by the cost per kWh. If your affordable solar panels create 5 kWh per day, and one kWh expenses $0.15, then you conserve $0.75 on your power expense per day. This may not seem like much, but it builds up quickly to $23.25 per month and $273.75 per year.

To see how long it will take for your solar power home to pay for themselves, divide the expense of the low-cost solar panels (minus the tax credit), and divide it by the quantity of cash you save per month. Any money conserved after that is pure return on financial investment.

Setting up domestic solar energy by constructing your very own low-cost photovoltaic panels is absolutely a great monetary investment and an exceptional contribution to the environment for a greener world.

Start saving money and the environment today, what are you waiting for? cheapest photovoltaic panel
