One of the world’s largest and most influential science organizations is launching a new campaign to cut through the noise of climate denialism and help the public understand the threat of climate change.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science kicked things off on Monday by publishing a 20-page report entitled What We Know. The gist: We know that global warming is real, risky, and demands a serious response — “the three Rs of climate change.”

“We’re trying to provide a voice for the scientific community on this issue so that we can help the country, help the world move this issue forward,” AAAS CEO Alan Leshner said during a call with reporters on Tuesday morning. “If we don’t move now we are at tremendous risk for some very high impact consequences, many of which are laid out in the report.”

The AAAS has also assembled a panel of a 13 leading scientists who will make public presentations and try to spread climate smarts far and wide.

Here’s an explanation of those three climate Rs from the initiative’s website:

The first is Reality — 97% of climate experts have concluded that human-caused climate change is happening.

The second is Risk — that the reality of climate change means that there are climate change impacts we can expect, but we also must consider what might happen, especially the small, but real, chance that we may face abrupt changes with massively disruptive impacts.

The third R is Response — that there is much we can do and that the sooner we respond, the better off we will be.

The report is not all gloom and doom. The call to action is premised on hope:

By making informed choices now, we can reduce risks for future generations and ourselves, and help communities adapt to climate change. People have responded successfully to other major environmental challenges such as acid rain and the ozone hole with benefits greater than costs, and scientists working with economists believe there are ways to manage the risks of climate change while balancing current and future economic prosperity.

As scientists, it is not our role to tell people what they should do or must believe about the rising threat of climate change. But we consider it to be our responsibility as professionals to ensure, to the best of our ability, that people understand what we know: human-caused climate change is happening, we face risks of abrupt, unpredictable and potentially irreversible changes, and responding now will lower the risk and cost of taking action.

Renowned climate scientist Michael Mann – a member at large of AAAS’s atmospheric sciences division but not a member of the new climate panel — lauded the initiative. “AAAS is the largest non-governmental scientific membership body in the world, so them taking such an affirmative role in the societal debate over climate change, and what to do about it, is significant,” Mann told Grist.

“The crux of the matter is that, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus that exists that, (a) climate change is real, (b) it is caused by us, and (c) it poses a grave threat to society if we do nothing about it, the public still thinks that there is a ‘debate’ on each of those elements,” Mann said.

The Pros And Cons Of Solar Panels

There are many individuals and homeowners that think of solar power and solar technology, solar panels especially, as futurist ideals of clean energy. Even more numerous are the individuals and homeowners that believe solar power and solar energy for the home would be a good idea eventually, but only if the technology advances further to make the applications more realistic.

Set the thermostat and leave it alone. You might think that it’s okay to change the temperature to suit the needs of the day. Maybe you usually turn the AC off completely at night. Odds are that your air conditioner will have to work twice as hard throughout the day to cool your home down, and so it doesn’t advantage you anything.

A simpler solution is to set the temperature to a warmer-but still comfortable-temperature and leave it alone. If your home is set to 75 degrees, your air conditioner will keep an even temperature throughout the entire day, and as soon as the temperature gets to 76, the AC will turn on and maintain the atmosphere.

Not using something? Unplug it. Almost everybody hears the advice to just turn off the lights in a room. That makes a difference. However, light bulbs are more efficient now than they used to be, so it’s not going to equate to saving as much as it used to. So if you’re not using an appliance or something like that, unplug it. A little bit of power going to a dozen different gadgets can add up.

The exact cost of installing solar panels on the home will vary from home to home and is dependent upon several factors including the home itself, the location, and the size of the system being installed. Another drawback to having solar panels on the home is the fact that while after installation the power produced and stored by the solar panels is free, the power source itself can be inconsistent.

An Upside Down House: Daniel Czapiewski, a Polish architect, decided that he wanted to turn architecture on its head, literally. That is exactly what he did when he designed a house that looks like it fell out of the sky into a Wizard of Oz movie set. The home is actually upside down, as if it was flipped over. Instead of steel roofing, Czapiewski’s house has concrete roofing!

So the cons for solar panels include its initial high costs and regular maintenance requirements, but for many these negatives to owning solar panels do not outweigh the multiple benefits. First and foremost, those with solar panels on their home are essentially free from the monthly power bills thanks to their solar power.

Saving money on your utility bills isn’t an easy thing to do. But there are simple things everyone can do to save a little bit at a time. When you use more than one strategy, your savings are compounded, and your electricity dollar goes further. So before you invest in a wind power or solar mounting system, make small, everyday changes and see how big a difference small things can make.

TRA Snow & Sun is the right company to improve your home by amplifying your energy efficiency with solar tile mounts and ensure your roof is ready for the winter with snow fences, snow guards, and more.

Why Go Green?

There are few things more satisfying than bidding the cold winds and freezing winter temperatures a temporary farewell and entering your warm and cozy house. Thanks to the invention of central heating, many of us find winters to be not nearly as bad as they otherwise would.

This is one of the reasons why this movement is unique. It can be designed based on the needs or wants of the individual. And they can feel good about the fact that they are helping the environment in the process.

Lower your Thermostat This can often be a topic of intense debate in any house or apartment, but the fact is that lowering your thermostat is the easiest and most direct way to cut down on the cost of heating your home. It’s estimated that for every degree that you lower your thermostat, you save around 3% on your next heating bill. However, make sure that you never turn off your thermostat while you are away. Doing so can sometimes cause pipes in the house to freeze and rupture, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Check your Windows Windows have a large part to play in how heat energy in your house is both created and dispersed. The first thing you should be aware of regarding your windows is how well they are fitted to your house. Cracks or spaces on your windows can leak heat at a surprising rate, causing your heater to work harder in order to keep your house warm.

Here are a few examples of ways the everyday person could reuse basic items:

* Used Books: Purchasing used books from the college bookstore or online, which can save a lot of money. You should also look into digital or eBooks that can be downloaded onto a computer or portable device. These options save money and help the environment. These are just a few of the many benefits of going green or reusing items that save time and money.

Solar Power If you want to make changes that will help cut your heating bill by a large percentage, consider supplementing your system with solar panels. Efficient solar materials, like the Helios 310 watt panels, can help cut your power costs that are raised by having to carry warm air throughout the house. Solar technology can be an effective and energy-conscious way to save on your next heating bill.

* Crate shelves: You can get old would or plastic crates from a grocery store and turn them sideways with the open part facing out. Then stack and secure the crates and you can use them just like a normal bookshelf. You can stack them in different ways and have many or just a few crates to make a unit. * Solar panels: This may not be something reused but it definitely a great way to go green! Solar panels are great for the environment and there are many different ways that you can use them whether it is on your roof with a Phonosolar 300 watt panel or on your flashlight, you should definitely check out all the hoopla with solar panels.

4 Cool Solar Powered Projects

Solar Power has come a long way over the years not only the technology used to make it more efficient and cost effective but the devices and inventions the energy is being used for. Here are four cool uses of solar energy.

Buy a low-flow shower head – The amount of water flowing through your pipes can be enormous. Purchase a water-efficient shower head which cost around $20 and uses up to fifty percent less water than a traditional showerhead. The right showerhead shouldn’t lower user satisfaction but should lower your heating bill. Maintain Your Furnace – This has two main parts. The first is to check the air filter. Clean it off every couple weeks and replace it when it can’t be cleaned. The air filter only costs $3-$15 and if you don’t replace it the heater will stop working. Oil boilers should be cleaned and tuned annually and gas systems every two years. A tune up costs around $100 but by maintaining your unit you can save between three to ten percent heating bills.

Purchase a Smart Thermostat- The costs of these thermostats vary depending on what extra functions you want but expect a costs between $50 to $100. The smart thermostat can help you save huge percentages on your heating bills if you set the thermostat to turn on before you get home and turn off when you are away you save hours of heating.

Global Sun Oven is a solar oven built to fill seventy percent of the needs for a seven person family. The ‘cooker’ can actually boil, steam, roast, etc. at high cooking temperatures up to 360 degrees. The oven should last around twenty years and only weighs around twenty pounds. This is definitely a cool, or rather hot solar powered gadget to help save money and clean up the environment.

Take Advantage of Heat – There are a bunch of activities in your house that cause heat you can take advantage of. If you are showering open up the door and let the hot air go through the house rather than turning on a vent in the bathroom. If you drying your clothing do the same thing open up the door to the laundry room and let the excess heat circulate. Open the shades when the sun is shining through and then close them up when it is dark outside to prevent the cold from entering as easily.

Solar Wi-Fi This is the classic solar power idea put to new use. The system works with by collecting energy, say through Helios 310 watt panels and then storing the energy in batteries for later use. While the system can be very costly to install, around $10,000 there is little to no maintenance required. The energy stored in the battery is used to create a Wi-Fi access point that reach a range of thirty miles pretty impressive.

Hopefully these tips helped to get you started on lowering your heating bill. However, there are many more ways to get the job done so do a bit more research and save some dough.

No, Climate Change Is Not Waking Bears From Hibernation

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Last week, a rogue black bear made a cameo appearance for skiers at the Heavenly Mountain Resort near Lake Tahoe. The month before, a 260-pound male bear had to be put down by wildlife officials after breaking into several cars and a home in the same area. The spate of run-ins comes as California’s brutal drought lingers on, with snowpack in the Sierra Nevada at a fifth of its normal level, leading several news outlets to suggest that balmy conditions have led bears here to awaken prematurely from their annual winter slumber.

That’s a nice hypothesis, but according to the California Department Fish and Wildlife, there’s nothing to it. Five to 15 percent of the Tahoe area’s 300 black bears stay awake every winter, said CDFW biologist Jason Holley, and “we don’t have any evidence to support that there’s any more this winter.” In fact, Holley said, the last few months of 2013 saw fewer bear complaints than average.

The front page of a recent San Francisco Chronicle. There’s no evidence that more bears are awake this year than in an average year, officials said. Clara Jeffery/Mother Jones

So why all the hullabaloo? Holley’s guess is that the drought cut down supplies of the bears’ natural food sources—mainly grass, berries, and insects, although they’ll eat just about anything—forcing those that are normally awake anyway to wander further afield, i.e., onto your ski slope or into your backyard. Not that the bears mind much.

“They are very adaptive and very mobile, so they will usually be able to take care of their daily needs in a drought situation,” Holley said. “But then they’re coming down to the lake to drink a lot, coming down for food. If the drought persists, it greatly increases the odds of a negative interaction with people.”

What motivates some bears to stay awake while others hibernate is still somewhat of a mystery to scientists, according to Roger Baldwin, a wildlife specialist at the University of California-Davis who has conducted extensive research on bear behavior. When small mammals (a squirrel, say) hibernate, their heart rate and body temperature drop radically, toeing death’s doorstep without actually stepping over, and stay that way for several months. Black bears, on the other hand, are much less extreme: They crank down their metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature just enough to get seriously lazy, but are still with it enough to be “perfectly capable of taking a swipe at you if you crawl into the den with them,” Baldwin said, so rousting them is neither uncommon nor difficult.

How To Get A Deal On Solar Panels

In a world obsessed with fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources, it is refreshing to take a quick look at what the industries of renewable energy are accomplishing.

Let’s run through some of the dangers and how to prevent them. Sunburn As you walk along the beach you will notice some people who have a nice healthy tan and others who have been burnt to a crisp. Not only is sunburn painful but it can make you sick giving you chills, nausea, and causing you to vomit. Your sunburn generally ranges from first degree burns which are redness and itchiness of the skin to secondary burns where blistering of the skin occurs and you are likely to develop an infection.

If you are considering solar panels for your home, there are many things you need to keep in mind so you can ensure that you choose the best panels for your location and your budget.

Recognizable by most through its appearance in the Hollywood movie “Sahara” the solar plant is much larger than it appears on screen (as only one section of the entire plant was displayed in the film) and boasts the capability of producing 377 megawatts of power, much more than a simple Phonosolar 300 watt panel.

Because the light from the sun is from a range of different wave-lengths, it is difficult for the solar panels to use energy from all of the sun’s light. This means that current models of solar panels do waste some of the sun’s energy, but remember that without these panels, the complete energy of the sun would be wasted.

You can use cool showers or compression to help remove the heat from the skin. This is a step further from sun burn and you may need to seek medical attention quickly. Heat Exhaustion Heat Exhaustion and its nasty older brother heat stroke are very serious and can be life threatening.

Heat Exhaustion includes symptoms including extreme thirst, cotton mouth, dizziness, and redness of the skin. If the heat exhaustion goes a step further and becomes heat stroke you will become extremely dizzy and possibly blackout. You may also stop sweating and have very dry skin as there are no fluids in your body to produce sweat. The lack of fluid will lead to organ failure and loss of adequate oxygen circulation in your system.

Remember also that in some areas you can sell your excess energy to other energy companies, and use other sources of energy when the light is insufficient to power your home.

Meant only to power the LED lights within the bus itself, the hybrid diesel electric bus is still the first in what many hope will be a long line of solar powered solutions to transit. These and other imaginative and forward-thinking projects undertaken by companies, governments, and private citizens around the globe provide the hope of a world no longer bound by its dependence upon the pollutants of fossil fuels.

Treat it with respect and enjoy the sun responsibly. Hopefully you never fall prey to the more viscous repercussions of excessive sun exposure and if you find yourself with mild sunburn let that be a lesson to you.

Understanding The Monetary Benefits Of Solar Power

Many find that energy costs can get very expensive, especially when it comes to heating and cooling your home. Throughout the year, seasons bring different temperatures and necessities for power.

Keeping your home cool and warm, as well as providing power for lighting and appliances can get very expensive, especially for those with larger homes and more area to power. There has been a big push among homeowners and environmentalists alike to find a less expensive type of energy that can be used on a domestic level. Utilizing different methods for harnessing power seems very unlikely for a regular home, seeing as most are created with specific powering systems. However, steps have been taken to make these types of energy more accessible for and usable in a domestic residence.

To determine this you will have to figure out what hemisphere you are in and how you can be sure that you are putting the panels up well. Make sure that you take the time that you need to understand that you may need a professional.

Solar panels are devices that are made up of photovoltaic cells which harness the sun’s UV rays and bring them into a type of container. When these rays have been collected, they are separated into their smaller components. After this process, the electrons are then gathered into a channel which travels into a generator. This generator is then able to use these electrons to create energy for home and, more recently, vehicles.

You should make sure that you take the time that you need to look at the statistics of the schools that are surrounding your home. This way, you will be able to know how your children are taught and how their environment at school is.

Take the time to also compile the hours of use that you will be using the machinery in your home. Make sure that you are as accurate as you can be with these numbers so that you can get a solar panel system that is the best fit for your home.

There are many arguments for and against using solar energy as a main source of power, but one of the biggest disputes is whether or not it really saves enough money for it to be worth it for normal American families. One drawback is that the equipment and installation themselves are rather pricey.

Many do not have the funds available to get started using solar power because they are not able to afford this aspect. Once the equipment has been installed and purchased, they are very low maintenance and do not require a lot of funds to keep going. Fortunately, the United States has offered some tax breaks and refunds for those that choose to become more efficient and utilize the sun to heat and provide their homes with electricity. When individuals file their taxes, they are able to indicate their purchasing or installation of solar panels and request some kind of monetary refund to help cover the costs.

Second, when you have the solar system that you want all picked out you should make sure that you find someone in your area that is licensed install it. Take the time that you need to find someone that is experienced in grid connected systems.

If you are interested in installing them, you may want to first do your research on the type of government assistance that you can receive. Once they have been put in place, there will definitely be a change in your monthly bills.

As you are looking through the many different homes you should be sure that you know how you are going to be sure that you figure out other costs. There are a lot of other costs that will be associated with your new home.

Make sure that you take the time that you need to understand how you are going to get all of the dust or dirt off of the glass. As you are learning how you are going to do this you will be ensuring that your solar power will operate at its maximum efficiency.

While utilizing other forms of electricity may cut your costs and help to maintain your budget, you may also find that the best method is the type that you have already been using. The more you research and decide which the best method is for you, the easier it will be to see where you can cut costs.

Saving energy and becoming more environmentally efficient is definitely important. Try to research other ways that you can live a more beneficial lifestyle economically and environmentally!

Eat Green for World Vegetarian Day

Vegetarians can use protein sources like almonds and walnuts to maintain a balanced diet. Photo: Cindy Baldhoff

When Christina Coley became a vegetarian 25 years ago, she did it as a personal, moral choice.

“I was actively involved in animal rights and didn’t think [eating meat] was a good way to live,” she says. But now the mother of three, who lives in Idaho, says she and her husband also appreciate the environmental benefits of vegetarianism.

“We have learned in the recent past that raising animals purely for food has a big impact on global warming, ozone issues and the like,” she says. “I believe that by not eating meat, I am helping preserve the environment a little bit.”

She says a vegetarian lifestyle is more sustainable, because she can easily choose to buy food that is grown locally. “I can even grow it myself,” Coley adds. “I’m not sure you can do that with meat very easily, if at all.”

A 2006 study by the University of Chicago backs up Coley’s statement. In “Diet, Energy and Global Warming,” researchers found that the average American diet gets about 47 percent of its calories from animal sources, which results in a carbon footprint of 2.52 tons annually. When red meat makes up about 50 percent of a diet’s calories, that number jumps to 3.57 tons. However, when just 25 percent of the calories come from fish, but no other meat sources, the carbon footprint drops to around 1 ton.

As World Vegetarian Day is observed on Oct. 1 — kicking off Vegetarian Awareness Month — it’s a good time to reassess what you’re eating and look at the effect it’s having on the planet. While many people are conscientious about recycling, using less electricity and composting, they may not be aware just how big of an effect their diet has on the environment.

According to the Vegetarian Society, livestock farming accounts for almost 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions created by human-related activities, and the United Nations claims that the meat industry produces more greenhouse gases than the world’s transportation sources combined. (Much of that comes from the nitrous oxide found in manure.)

Another environmental effect comes from the fossil fuels used to transport animals for slaughter and for delivery after being processed, and to power the production of their feed. Any way you crunch the numbers, it all adds up to a significant contribution to greenhouse gases, and lowering meat consumption is an important tool in furthering environmental sustainability.
