Shell has started pumping from the world’s deepest underwater oil field.

What could go wrong?

The Stones field, 200 miles south of New Orleans and 1.8 miles beneath the water surface, is far deeper than the field tapped by the Deepwater Horizon rig, which exploded in 2010, killing 11 workers and spilling about 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

The new project, the Guardian reports, could be a boon to Shell CEO Ben van Beurden, whose annual bonus is linked to completing major new projects. But some Shell shareholders will be less than pleased. At the company’s annual meeting last year, many shareholders pushed to end CEO bonuses for actions that harm the climate and to require investments in renewables.

Last year, van Beurden admitted that we cannot burn all the fossil fuel reserves on the planet and expect global temperature rise to stay below 2 degrees Celsius. Above 2C, climate scientists warn that the consequences will be severe and, in some cases, irreversible. So far, we’re halfway there.

But Shell is just continuing on with business as usual: The company forecasts that its deep-water production capacity will grow dramatically by the early 2020s.

GOP Rebel Justin Amash Just Beat a Guy Who Called Him “Al Qaeda’s Best Friend”

Mother Jones

The GOP’s business establishment talked openly about making conservative hardliners pay for pushing Washington toward a debt ceiling crisis last fall. But that wave of Chamber of Commerce-funded primary challengers to conservative incumbents never materialized. The Chamber settled on trying to take out Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), a second term congressman and Ron Paul disciple famous for voting on no on pretty much everything—even the Paul Ryan budget—and for cobbling together a bipartisan coalition to rein in the NSA’s domestic surveillance programs. It was the first part that drew the ire of business interests in his district, and the second part that made him the villain in one of the year’s nastiest campaign ads. Amash, challenger Brian Ellis warned, was “Al Qaeda’s best friend” in Congress.

Ellis received a rare primary endorsement from an incumbent member of Amash’s Michigan delegation, GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, an NSA defender. But we’re not in 2002 anymore; it turns out Amash’s civil libertarianism plays pretty well in the western Michigan district that gave America Gerald Ford. Boosted by deep-pocketed donors of his own (including the DeVos family), Amash eased past Ellis, making him a sure-thing to win a third term in November.

Memo to Political Reporters: Iowa Is More Than Just Farming

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Republicans took a page from the Mother Jones playbook Tuesday and uncovered video of a politician speaking a bit too freely at a private fundraiser. The New York Times‘ Nick Confessore was quick to dub it “47%”-like. American Rising, an opposition research PAC founded by Mitt Romney’s former campaign manager, released a video of Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), the Democrats’ likely candidate for Iowa’s open Senate seat this year, speaking before a crowd of lawyers at a fundraiser in Texas. Braley, himself a lawyer, disparages Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) for being just a “farmer from Iowa.”

The nerve! How dare someone running for office in the heartland question the credentials of a farmer! Yet when it’s presented in its full context, Braley’s statement offers a valid critique: Grassley lacks a law degree and, should Republicans retake the Senate this fall, he’d be first in line to chair the Judiciary Committee. Here’s the full quote:

To put this in stark contrast, if you help me win this race you may have someone with your background, your experience, your voice, someone who’s been literally fighting tort reform for 30 years, in a visible or public way, on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Or, you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law, serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Because, if Democrats lose the majority, Chuck Grassley will be the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The horror! A lawyer touting his shared credentials before a room of fellow lawyers! And he wasn’t just puffing up his audience: Grassley taking over the influential committee truly would be unprecedented. As the Daily Beast‘s Ben Jacobs points out, every single senator who has chaired the committee (dating back to 1816) has been a lawyer.

But the media couldn’t help itself, pouncing at the slightest whiff of a gaffe. “Despite Iowa’s centrist tendencies, Braley is heavily favored to win, and wasn’t considered a major pickup opportunity for Republicans,” a National Journal reporter wrote. “That may change now, thanks to this video.”

When Spruce Beetles Attack!

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Since the late 1990s, mountain pine beetles have swept through millions of acres of forest in the Rockies, turning hillsides of trees a rusty red and then grey as they populate trees and kill them. In Colorado, this outbreak seems to have peaked in 2008 and 2009; but just as one species slowed, another—the spruce beetle—has picked up steam. A new University of Colorado study published in Ecology reveals how drought was the driver of the rise in spruce beetle activity and resulting tree deaths in Colorado’s high-elevation forests in recent years. The drought is in turn linked to changes in sea surface temperatures that are expected to continue for decades to come. In the long-term, such massive insect infestations could dramatically diminish North American forests’ ability to retain water and sequester carbon—meaning trees will be less effective at balancing out the human toll on the environment.

So far, fewer acres of trees have been affected by spruce beetles than mountain pine beetles, but there are more spruce forests in Colorado than Lodgepole pine, so there’s “no reason to expect the percentage mortality to be less or acreage affected to be any less” than it was for the mountain pine beetle epidemic, said Tom Veblen, coauthor of the study and a geography professor at CU.

RNC Chair Pretends to Be Outraged Over Hillary Miniseries

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

Speaking of Republicans trying to work the refs, here’s their latest effort: a letter to NBC demanding that they cancel their planned Hillary Clinton miniseries, which RNC chair Reince Priebus calls a “thinly-veiled attempt at putting a thumb on the scales of the 2016 presidential election.” Here’s the final paragraph of the letter:

That kind of swagger goes over well with the base, but in the real world it accomplishes nothing except to ensure that NBC doesn’t accede to their demands. But I guess that’s probably the point. I doubt that Priebus really cares much about the miniseries, which is likely to have a near-zero effect on the 2016 race. But he does care about rallying the troops. This should accomplish that nicely. I expect this to generate plenty of chatter in the Fox/Drudge/Rush echo chamber over the next few days.

Getting By in America

Mother Jones

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd”>

The latest from Gallup:

The federal poverty threshold for a family of four is just under $24,000; however, Americans believe such a family unit living in their community needs more than double that — $58,000, on average — just to “get by.

Hmmm. By coincidence, that’s almost exactly the median income of an American family. It makes you suspect that most people think their own income, by definition, is just barely enough to get by. Turns out that’s almost the case:

Adults in households earning less than $30,000 think it takes an average of $43,600 to get by. However, the estimate rises to $55,100 among those earning between $30,000 and $74,999, and to $69,400 among those making $75,000 or more.

Poor people think they need a bit more than their own income; middle class folks think their own income is just barely sufficient; and upper middle folks are willing to concede that they could get by on slightly less than they make. Still, to a pretty close approximation, whatever income we make turns out to be the income we consider barely sufficient.
